Mutaw has been the principal investigator for more than 500 cultural resource management projects that have included large-scale surveys, testing, excavations and forensic anthropology, and he has authored more than 250 cultural resources management reports, as well as published peer-reviewed articles. He has managed cultural resource management staffs for companies such as URS Corporation, managing more than 200 projects while serving as a business development leader and mentor for staff archeologists, anthropologists, ethnologists, historians and architectural historians.
