BRG - Key Persons

Brian Small Brian - Managing Director

Job Titles:
  • Director
  • Managing Director
Brian is the Managing Director of BRG. He is an experienced advisor, having worked for over three decades with listed and private companies, public sector agencies and NGOs, at both senior management and Board level. He has an in-depth understanding of reputation and risk management, honed from many years on the front lines of major crises, both here and offshore. He has led communications teams dealing with industrial disasters, utility system failures, transport accidents, privacy and security breaches and dysfunctional cultures, to name a few. Since the seeds of most crises are planted internally, those experiences have taught him that strong organisational values are key to both prevention and recovery. He takes pride in helping clients meet today's increasing environmental, social and governance challenges. Effective communication strategies can often help overcome policy or regulatory conflicts, develop new and more lasting relationships with important stakeholders, or help workforce transitions. For example, Brian has had considerable experience with energy producers and suppliers, industrial manufacturers, infrastructure and transport operators, and the finance sector, all of which are now having to pivot to a more sustainable, low carbon future. Positive change is also taking place in other sectors, and he has valued the opportunity to work with many iwi commercial entities. Brian leads BRG's executive training unit which delivers high level media and presentation skills training. He is a member of the Institute of Directors and an IOD facilitator, a Supreme Award winner and Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand. "On Ma ori issues I can sit and listen to a Ma ori audience and understand exactly what they are saying. I can also look at the other side and understand exactly why they are misinterpreting what is being said. Big issues often get hung up on something small. Nuance is very important. You need to be able to walk in both worlds."
