My students often ask why I decided to become an architect. I share with them how much of my youth shaped my interest in architecture. My father is a custom stair and rail builder and my mother was a teacher. As a family, we would spend our evenings and Saturdays delivering stairs to houses for my father's young business. I spent a lot of time on construction sites as I grew up working summers installing stairs and handrails, learning to appreciate detailing and design. I graduated from New York Institute of Technology in 1982 and went to work for a custom residential design build firm for 10 years. It gave me experience in construction, management and understanding what a contractor actually needs from an architect. I have shaped my drawings, detailing and specifications on that knowledge (thanks Aaron).
