Amanda Rankin

Amanda Rankin, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) was voted in as the newest Governing Board member at the July Governing Board meeting. Ms. Rankin brings to the membership an expertise in Crisis Mental Health Services and a thorough knowledge of how to navigate the Child and Adolescent Mental Health system in Illinois. Ms. Rankin also has experience working within the child welfare system. As a new Governing Board member, Amanda stated that she believes that she is able to bring to the Board membership a unique perspective as a former employee. Amanda hopes that she will be useful in helping the members understand the challenges of the agency employees. Her goal would be to increase retention of the great staff that Family Service currently has and to increase employee job satisfaction. Amanda reports that she is at a stage in her like that allows her the time and knowledge to make contributions as a Board member. She also reported that she has a soft spot in her heart for Family Service Association since she loved working for the agency and enjoyed the collegiality of her co-workers. When asked who has influenced her the most in her work and volunteer life, Amanda has two words: "My family". Amanda describes a childhood filled with volunteer experiences with her family. She remembers her family taking long summer trips to work with Native American families to help build their homes in Oklahoma. Amanda reports that her mother was a teacher for youth with behavioral and emotional problems. She recalls that her parents always served on governing boards, maybe two or three at a time, to give back to their community. Amanda looks forward to continuing this legacy of service. Ms. Rankin has a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She has a Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Psychology. Ms. Rankin is currently working for a company called Alternative Teaching. This business works with at-risk youth and their families to teach the family members the skills needed to stabilize their family.

Bernadette (Bernie) May

Bernadette (Bernie) May is the current Executive Director for Family Service Association of the Greater Elgin Area (FSA) where she oversees the daily operations of this not-for-profit community mental health center who has been serving children and their families since 1931. Bernie has been in this role since September, 2017. Prior to that, she served as the Clinical Director at FSA for five years. She received her Bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Dakota in 1999 and then went on to obtain her Master's in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. She has worked in different capacities in the mental health field since 1998. She gets the great pleasure of co-chairing several committees to help advance positive change in the systems of care while also partaking as a stakeholder in state-wide committees particularly around children's mental health. Bernie has a passion for community based mental health services where you bring together partners to rally around families so that they can feel healthy and supported where they naturally live, work, learn, and play.

Christina Dewar

Christina has been a part of FSA since 2020, starting as a Police Social Work Intern. In the fall of 2020, she transitioned into the role of a Crisis Specialist and Resource Specialist. Christina then took on the role of Manager of Care Coordination in Fall of 2022, where she oversees a team providing Wraparound services to children and families. Prior to FSA, Christina received her Bachelor's in Social Work at Oral Roberts University and Master's in Forensic Social Work at Aurora University. Christina has previous experience working with youth in Foster Care and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She is passionate about helping youth and families navigate mental health challenges and needs.

Claudia C. Serrano

My name is Claudia C. Serrano. I have a beautiful family with my husband and my two children who are in elementary school. My goal in life is to constantly grow myself and build a strong marriage so that together with my husband we can support the comprehensive development of my children. I believe in the infinite love of God our Lord and I am very grateful for all the blessings that I have in my life. I am passionate about serving others and supporting them by bringing them closer to community services and resources. I dream of an ever better community, I firmly believe that families can be advocates so that we have better opportunities in all senses and a better quality of life, that's why I'm in FSA, and now as a FSA Board member, I want to support our community to access Mental Health services when they need them. I am currently a member of COFI -POWER PAC. I am honored to be the Elgin Branch Delegate of the Parents with Power group for the years 2022-2023. I am a member of the Kane County Health Department Parent Council. I am a Reader of the Word at St. Mary's Temple in Elgin. I am studying ESL at Elgin Community College "ECC" and I am a volunteer at the Gail Borden Public Library. Originally from Mexico where I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Training Sciences and a Master's Degree in Organizational Development in the process of Graduation. Mi nombre es Claudia C. Serrano. Tengo una hermosa familia con mi esposo y mis dos hijos quienes están cursando el nivel elemental. Mi objetivo en la vida es estar en constante crecimiento yo y hacer un matrimonio fuerte para que junto con mi esposo podamos apoyar el desarrollo integral de mis hijos. Creo en el infinito amor de Dios nuestro Señor y estoy muy agradecida por todas las bendiciones que tengo en mi vida. Me apasiona servir a los demás y apoyarlos acercándoles los servicios y recursos comunitarios. David Rock

is pleased to share with you some background information on board member, David Rock, who has been with us since 2000 and proudly served as our chairman from 2005-2013. Background David is the current CEO of IHC Contruction Companies, LLC. He is responsible for the daily operational and strategic decisions of all of IHC's diversified construction pursuits. In 25 years with the firm he has participated in all and led in many of the firm's growth markets. The firm has undergone substantial growth going from annual revenues of $20M to $200M. Strategically the firm has the ability to deliver projects by a wide variety of delivery systems and its industry reputation has led to several large joint venture pursuits. Ed is a Board Certified Chaplain who recently retired from Presence Health System after 32 years as their Director of Pastoral Care. Ed is very involved in the local community by serving on multiple different Boards of Directors and also as a volunteer chaplain for both the fire department and police department in Elgin. Ed and his wife are long-time residents of Elgin.

JoAnn Stingley

JoAnn Stingley joined the board at Family Service Association 9 years ago and is the chairperson for our 85th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. JoAnn was hired as the Victim Assistance Coordinator at the Elgin, Illinois Police Department in 1991. She developed the Police Department's Social Services Unit which provides family, individual, and group counseling, crisis intervention, community program development, and domestic violence advocacy and counseling, which is funded by the federal Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant. She serves on various community boards and committees. Prior to working at the Elgin Police Department, JoAnn Stingley was an educator and a social worker at several local agencies.

Katelyn is a full time Realtor and has a Master's in Social Work. She advocates for equal access to mental health, education, and housing. She bridges the connection between people and resources to build up the community. Katelyn is a proud resident of Streamwood where she lives with her husband, Carlos, and two children, Isabella and Luca.

Lauren Duddles

I'm a mother of two teenagers, a former high school educator for at-risk youth (in D300 and U-46), and community organizer. I was a founding member of Fight the Stigma, which educated and empowered students and staff about mental health, and a current member of Moms Demand Action, and was recently appointed to serve on the Youth Commission in Saint Charles.

Mansi Patel - COO

Mansi has been working at FSA since 2017 in Human Resource roles. In 2022 she moved into a Development role in the organization while continuing to oversee HR. Additionally, Mansi is very passionate about advancing equity and social justice. She has worked diligently to help FSA meet organizational goals around equity and she provides leadership in the community to support this work throughout our service area. Prior to coming to FSA, Mansi worked in multiple HR roles. She is a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory. Mansi is a dedicated, compassionate and motivated professional who utilizes her talents to make the community a healthier place for all.

Roxana Mendez

Roxana Mendez is the Manager of Care Coordination for Pathways serving Kane and Dekalb Counties. Roxana started her career at FSA as a Bilingual Care Coordinator 9 years ago. Since then Roxana has worked in a variety of programs at FSA and has held positions in Outpatient therapy, Crisis services most recently as the Lead School Based Mental Health Therapist. Prior to coming to FSA, Roxana started her career in case management with local community health centers and provided support to link families to community resources. She has consistently engaged in learning and implementing principles of high fidelity wraparound with families and youth that experience serious mental health or behavioral challenges. Roxana received her Master's from National Louis University in 2011 and her Bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University in 2007, both in Psychology.

Sarah Welz

Sarah Welz, LCSW is the Manager of Care Coordination, where she supervises a staff of Care Coordinators who work with clients and their families to provide quality care and wrap around services to better their mental health and overall wellbeing. Sarah first worked at FSA as a SASS Therapist (Screenings, Assessment, and Support Services) where she would provide crisis interventions and therapy to clients and their families in the Kendall County Area and the Central Kane County area. Sarah then went on to be the Lead SASS Therapist at FSA. Prior to FSA Sarah worked in an inpatient hospital setting, working with children, adolescents, and adults to stabilize and get them connected to continued services upon being discharged. Sarah received her Masters degree in Social Work from Aurora University in 2018 and her Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Aurora University in 2017.

Suzann Jonson

Suzann Jonson is the Human Resources Director at Middleby. She joined Middleby in April 2011 as a temp employee processing payroll. This roll quickly merged to include Benefits Management and then Human Resources. The role has since been formalized and evolved into the Corporate Director of HR, bringing the brand's purpose, allowing all Middleby employees to bring their whole self to work and to life, through its people. Ms. Jonson' s initiatives and passion points include driving a diversity strategy across all levels of the company and fostering a culture of well-being to inspire mutual learning, development, personal and career growth. Ms. Jonson has been instrumental in redefining Middleby's culture of giving back and was designer of #middlebycares; Middleby's philanthropic initiative. Other key initiatives of the corporation include plan design of all Benefits, launching a new Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and Middleby careers across all brands. Ms. Jonson has enrolled in Clinical Health Counseling Masters program at Judson University in Elgin. Suzann's passion for seeing the potential in all people, her ability to bring them to their highest self, and her business acumen will be a great asset to the FSA organization and families.

Tatiana Calhamer

Family Service Association of Greater Elgin Area would like to extend a warm welcome to one of our new board members. Tatiana "Tish" Calhamer, 48, was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic to a Dominican mother and a German-American father. Thanks to her mother, she is fluent in Spanish. It is a miracle she also speaks English, as her father was not a big talker. From an early age, Tish was a huge reader, reading everything from "Little House on the Prairie," to books about owls, astronomy, and Susan B. Anthony. She grew up in La Grange Park, IL, where she attended Lyons Township High School, graduating in 1986. LT's most famous alum is actor David Hasselhoff, class of '70. Tish then went on to the U of I/Urbana-Champaign, where she spent 7 years earning two useless degrees in music, before finally earning her Masters in library science in 1993. She was promptly employed by the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, and has remained there ever since. (Her student loans are paid off.) She is the Readers Services & Civic Engagement Librarian there, and encourages people in the community to become engaged in civic life through literacy and library services. Mental health is one of the top health concerns in our county and country today, and of personal interest to Tish. She has suffered from depression and anxiety over the years, has several friends who have similar issues. Tish's mission is to educate people about mental illness to remove the shame and stigma associated with it, so that everyone who is affected can receive treatment and support in a caring, accepting environment.
