Dawn Tatro - CFO

Job Titles:
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Member of the Leadership Team
Honesty. Integrity. A common sense approach. These are the values that Dawn Tatro lives by and strives to imbue G.W. Tatro Construction with. She sees them as essential, American, and knows that the company is the stronger for embodying them. Dawn endeavors to bring a more human touch to G.W. Tatro that is characteristic of the small town Vermont she grew up in. "We are a family owned business," she says, and believes in doing right by all those who work there. As CFO, Dawn is best positioned to accomplish these goals. She handles all the duties of a human resources officer, and the chief financial officer in charge of the fiscal management decisions of the company, its economic reporting and its planning. Dawn received her degree in accounting from Champlain College in 1986. She handled accounts receivable for a local ski resort after graduating, then spent time working for a private accounting company. As time went on, she began to manage several of the family businesses that she and her husband, Greg, owned. She handled financials for a variety of endeavors: a snowplowing company, a sand and gravel business, a horse farm, a few rental companies, and a local deli. In 2003, Dawn was brought into G.W. Tatro to help the company get a better understanding of its finances. She helped to overhaul the entire accounting system as controller. When Greg and Dawn bought the company in 2005, she became Chief Financial Officer/Vice President, and has worked in close conjunction with Greg to confront the challenges of a fast changing industry. In 2011, Dawn became president of Tatro Pipeline, a successful spin off of G.W. Tatro that worked on gas lines in Western Pennsylvania. She and Greg sold the company in 2013. Dawn is proud of her work at G.W. Tatro: she treasures the people that work for the company and their families. "We really care about each and every one of our employees. I think of them as part of the family." In the end, she feels that "the longevity of our company shows the commitment that we have as a team." Dawn is an enthusiastic grandmother, and loves spending time with her new grandson, Eisen Tatro. She loves to take him on the tractor and lawnmower, and to show him around her horse farm. She also loves to travel, and treasures the time she spends with friends and family in Costa Rica.

Gerald Tatro

Job Titles:
  • Member of the Leadership Team
  • Our Founder
Gerald "didn't want to just build roads," his son, Greg, would later say. "He wanted to do everything… he liked the challenge of moving the earth." He was driven by that challenge. The traits that G.W. Tatro prides itself on to this day are largely a reflection of Gerald's character: a strong work ethic, a no-nonsense attitude, and a sense of family. Over time, he gathered an ambitious and highly skilled team about him to tackle an increasing variety of jobs. In 45 years, G.W. Tatro Construction would grow from a crew of just himself to over 40 employees by the time of his death. He loved to work on the mountain- whether it be snowmaking or trail construction- but he pushed the boundaries of what a heavy civil construction company could do time and time again. Like himself, the company would come to pride itself on doing what others considered to be too difficult. He worked in states from Maine to North Carolina and was proud to take on daunting tasks. He was involved in and oversaw all aspects of the company, and wasn't beyond working in the dirt with his men. In fact, he loved it. To this day, people still say that Gerald was the most skilled bulldozer operator that they'd ever seen.

Greg Tatro - CEO, President

Job Titles:
  • Chief Executive Officer
  • Member of the Leadership Team
  • President
Greg's philosophy has always been simple: do it right the first time. As President, Greg strives every day to bring G.W. Tatro's work up to the highest standard. He does his utmost to build positive relationships with his clients and to bring a personal touch to the company's work. This better allows their vision to be fully realized in the final product. Like his father before him, Greg is involved in and oversees all aspects of the company, and isn't beyond working in the dirt with his men.Greg began working at G.W. Tatro in 1982 at the age of 19 as a basic laborer. From there, he worked his way up to foreman, supervisor and project manager. In the 1990's, he worked directly at his father Gerald's side as Vice President of the company. He managed all phases of mountain construction projects, and consistently exceeded margin goals and client expectations throughout his tenure. When Gerald passed away in 2002, Greg assumed the mantle of President. Since then, he has coordinated the continued growth and development of the company, focusing on modernization and emphasizing a renewed commitment to safety. Greg also helped to bring forth a massive overhaul of the equipment fleet, bringing in the latest in technology and safety for employees to work with. Another major undertaking the company undertook was a commitment to project diversification. This belief brought the company to focus on the renewable energy sector. "Energy is something that everybody needs," he explains. G.W. Tatro also successfully created a spin-off pipeline company in Western Pennsylvania that seized on the opportunity that the shale gas boom has provided. In the last decade, the company has also worked on hydroelectric, solar, and wind projects. Greg has also pushed the company to embrace greater awareness of the environment, even going so far as to implement a ‘no idling' policy in the company parking lot. To Greg, the most important moment of being CEO was that first decision to take control of the company after Gerald's passing. In the end, he said, it was the great people that worked at G.W. Tatro that convinced him to keep the company going: "that's what made the difference," he said. He has always done his best to put the workers first. Others who have worked with Greg over the years concur: Others said that he always gave those who worked under him a chance to move up. He is well known for encouraging people to push themselves and try to take on new opportunities. Like his father, he is fond of telling people that "there is no such thing as can't." Greg loves what he does at G.W. Tatro because he feels that the work the company does benefits the community. He is always open to challenging projects - the more difficult the better. "It keeps you coming to work every day," he explains. Most importantly, Greg strives every day to run the company in a way that is worthy of Gerald's legacy. When not at the company, Greg is passionate about hockey. His close proximity to both the Bruins' and Canadiens' arenas means he can usually get out to a game or two during the season. He loves to cross country ski in the woods, often accompanied by his wife on snow shoes. In the summer months, he will often go to his camp on Lake Carmi.

G.W. Tatro was tasked with removing the entire top terminal of a ski lift and its components. Ascutney is well known for having no work roads, steep terrain and no access to the summit. The client believed that the only way to remove the terminal was by air. When G.W. Tatro wanted to extricate it with their mountain crew, Justin recalls that "they said we were crazy. That it was not possible" accomplish the removal with heavy equipment. He proved them wrong: "We did it for half the price, safely, and with heavy equipment," thanks to an expert mountain crew and lots of planning.
