In the summer of 1954, Five hundred employees of the U. S. Hoffman Machinery Corp. at Scranton, Pa.,won the right to I.A.M. representation as the result of an election conducted at the plant by the National Labor Relations Board. Official tabulations released by the N.L.R.B., show that 267 of the secret-ballot votes were cast for the I.A.M., 186 for the CIO Steelworkers and 27 for no union.The Hoffman campaign was headed by Grand Lodge Rep. John T. Sullivan, who praised Scranton AFL organizations for assisting the I.A.M. in the drive. He cited particularly the Scranton Building Trades Council and the Central Labor Union.
