One of the most frustrating things about genealogy is dealing with your own sloppy notes! Start out with good research habits. Whether you're using paper or software, use standardized forms such as research logs, family group sheets, and ancestry charts. This will let you see at a glance what information you have, and what you still need. Always document the sources of your information! You might trace your ancestors back twenty generations, but if no one can tell where your information came from, they will not take your research seriously. When you are ready to put your research online, or in print, your work will be given much more respect if you can show the sources for your information... Once you know what it is you want to research, and are prepared with the appropriate forms, begin your research with your other family members, especially the older ones. What do they know about their ancestors? Do any of them have any old material related to the family, such as family bibles,..
