Mike provides counsel to many of our clients in the procurement, evaluation, and enforcement of patents and trademarks. His fields of expertise include electrical, electro-mechanical, mechanical, and software-related technologies. In his more than 20 years of practicing IP law at our firm, he has prepared and prosecuted numerous utility and design patent applications directed at a wide variety of technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicle systems, spark plugs and vehicle ignition systems, laser welding applications, autonomous vehicle systems, metal fabrication, vehicle telemetry, precious metal alloys, sound-damping laminates, wiring harnesses, industrial temperature-dependent switches, container and package handling systems, vehicle tires and wheels, and vehicle power distribution devices, to cite just a few. He has extensive experience managing large and complex patent portfolios for clients, as well as monitoring the portfolios of their competitors. Prior to starting at our firm, Mike gained engineering experience within different divisions of Delphi Corporation, where he worked in various engineering capacities. He has been named a "Rising Star" by Michigan Super Lawyers® and an "IP Star" by the magazine Managing Intellectual Property. In addition, Mike has served on the firm's Management Committee as vice president in charge of personnel. Mike graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan with a degree in electrical engineering and also finished cum laude at Wayne State University Law School. He has authored over 300 original patent applications and handled nearly 50 appeals to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. He has served as lead intellectual property counsel on several mergers and acquisitions involving purchase prices exceeding $100 million. William regularly counsels individuals and companies with respect to procuring, protecting, and enforcing intellectual property rights. His patent prosecution focuses on the electrical, electro-mechanical, and computer arts, and he has experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a wide variety of technologies, including medical devices, automotive control systems, industrial power transmission devices, motor architectures, data storage and retrieval, and electronic interfaces. William received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan. During law school, he was an associate editor and then a contributing editor for the Michigan Law Review.
