In 1947, many homes in rural North Carolina were without modern conveniences. Few homes in these areas had heat except fireplaces and many were without indoor plumbing and bathroom facilities. Rural Plumbing and Heating began servicing these communities in the spring of 1947. Based in the basement of the Nivison's home, Rural Plumbing and Heating began business with four trucks. The Nivison's home was near the North Carolina coast and they worked throughout Eastern North Carolina.
