Andrew was the Founder and President of Thunderbird Advisory Group prior to joining HL&B in April 2021. He has over 24 years of finance, consulting and operations experience in key industries including energy, professional advisory services, healthcare, industrial services, business solutions and public accounting. He is a noted subject matter expert in the area of finance and accounting, related IT technologies, human resources and business performance improvement and optimization. He has held the role of Partner in another regional CPA firm as well as Chief Financial Officer for several private equity sponsored entities as well as privately held businesses (within the energy, industrial services, staffing and healthcare industries). He served as a Managing Director for a boutique financial advisory services firm providing engagement management and oversight for both public and private clients. Andrew also served in the energy audit practice with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and has deep experience in operations management and business development roles with other firms.

Anka has more than 20 years of experience advising clients on matters involving tax consulting and planning and compliance in the federal and multi-state tax areas for corporations and partnerships. His background also includes extensive experience assisting clients with ASC 740 tax provision services and IRS audit support. Anka's industry experience includes upstream and midstream energy, oilfield services, construction, manufacturing and distribution for companies ranging in size from startups to those with several subsidiaries and significant global operations. He also serves portfolio companies of private equity firms and for family-owned businesses and its owners. Anka spent over 20 years at BDO as a Tax Managing Director and was the leader of his corporate tax group. He was responsible for managing the scheduling function of the corporate group and was recognized for his ability to train, coach and help with the professional career progression of members of his team. Anka has a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He is fluent in Chinese, Mandarin and, Cantonese.

ANN MASEL

Ann Masel is a native Houstonian, but has been transplanted to Galveston since 1974. She received her CPA in 1972 and worked at Touche Ross and Co. (now Deloitte) until temporarily retiring for motherhood and volunteerism. In 1990 Ann re-entered the workforce and has been a CPA firm partner ever since. Ann combines her background in accounting with her experiences in community service for her not for profit and municipal clients. This background has provided the impetus to offer great service and personal interest to her other client base as well. Ann is married, has two sons, two spectacular daughters-in-law, and four perfect grandsons. She enjoys assisting clients as well as continuing her activities as a community volunteer.

Ben is a Houston native that joined HL&B shortly after graduating from the University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2011. He has spent his career with the firm, acquiring experience in a wide diversity of industries including employee benefit plans, not-for-profits, financial services and oilfield service companies as well as gaining extensive experience with property and casualty insurance companies. This experience has allowed Ben the ability to work closely with executive management to explore opportunities to build efficiencies and ensure compliance in highly regulated environments. Ben is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and its Houston Chapter.

BILL ANSELL

After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin in 1980, Bill returned to his home town of Galveston, Texas, where he has been practicing public accounting ever since. He has significant experience in individual and estate tax planning and has provided a wide range of services to clients in numerous industries, including governmental entities, construction contractors, marine transportation providers, personal service companies, retailers, and fabrication and wholesale companies. Bill fulfills his passion for wetlands and waterfowl conservation by serving on the Board of Directors of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. and is Treasurer and President of Ducks Unlimited de Mexico. Bill also serves on the Board of Directors of American National Insurance Company, Inc. and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. In his down time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Carla is an Attorney and CPA with HL&B and assists clients with complex international, federal and state tax issues, commercial litigation matters, financial analysis and forensic accounting. She has provided research and analysis regarding domestic and foreign issues, including mergers and acquisitions, multi-jurisdictional compliance and structuring issues. She has developed and analyzed discovery data for expert witnessing in multiple IRS and civil litigation cases. Her experience includes Corporate tax returns for consolidated entities, pass through tax returns for Subchapter S corporations, LLC and partnerships, individual returns for high net worth individuals, estates and trusts, pension and benefit plans, non-profit accounting, including unrelated business activity taxation, and various excise taxes. In litigation matters, Carla has addressed developing and modeling strategy to defend against potential claims; modeling of damages based on tax capital accounts; litigation consulting in tax, economic damage and intellectual property cases. She has also provided consulting and analysis of positions for tax, economic damage, intellectual property claims, financial reporting and management of bankruptcy estate. Carla holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from Baylor University and a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center. She is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in the state of Texas and a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and admitted to US Tax court.

Her experience covers a broad range of clients across many industries including construction contractors, financial institutions, real estate, and professional service providers. Cindi began her career as a tax adviser in 1985 with Arthur Andersen. In 2002, she and Steve Stevens, a retired Arthur Andersen partner, followed the advice of a long-time client and established their own tax practice. Due to their focus on providing excellent client service, the practice grew by leaps and bounds. In January 2019, they combined their firm with Ham, Langston & Brezina, LLP to provide a more robust offering of services to their clients. Cindi graduated with Highest Honors from the University of Texas at Austin's Business Honors Program with a Bachelor of Business Administration. She also received her Master in Professional Accounting from UT-Austin. She is a Certified Public Accountant as well as a Certified Financial Planner. Over the years, Cindi has been privileged to work with numerous families and their various business and investment entities. She has extensive knowledge in partnership, individual, trust, and estate tax planning and compliance. Cindi is married to Vic Matthews. They have two children, Will and Kit. She is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Galveston County, Inc. and an active member of the Assistance League of the Bay Area.
