FAMILY VISION CENTRE - Key Persons


Dr. John Skilling

Dr. Skilling graduated from the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry in 1970. He returned to his hometown of Sudbury to practice in the downtown area. In 1972, he opened a small satellite office in The New Sudbury Centre - which at the time was a small strip mall. This part-time location became a full-time office within one year. Although Dr. Skilling is fully retired now he is still the owner of the practice, with four additional optometrists under the name Family Vision Centre. Dr. Skilling spends most of his spare time hunting and fishing or just being in the great outdoors at one of his three shacks, as he calls his camps. When he isn't at the camps during the colder months he's enjoying his retirement in sunny Florida.

Dr. Julia Levesque

Dr. Julia Levesque graduated from the University of Waterloo Optometry and Vision Science in 2013. In addition to graduating first in her class, she was a recipient of multiple awards. During her years studying Optometry, Julia took the opportunity to expand her knowledge and experience with a 4 month externship at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma and participating in a VOSH mission trip to Lima, Peru.

Dr. Megan Van Alstine

Dr. Megan Van Alstine, O.D. graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science in 2019. Upon graduating she received an award for Excellency in Contact Lens Patient Care from Cooper Vision. Dr. Van Alstine provides full-scope care to patients of all ages. During her studies she took the opportunity to expand her knowledge on ocular disease management and therapeutics at the Ochelata and Vinita Cherokee Health Clinics in Oklahoma with a 4-month externship. She is also focused on delivering patient-centered care, which includes personalized treatment plans based on individual patient needs. Dr. Van Alstine is a Northern Ontario native from Espanola, Ontario and is happy to be returning to the region. In her spare time she enjoys reading, and spending time with her husband. She is certified in therapeutic pharmaceutical agents and is happy to be joining the team of talented Optometrists at the Family Vision Centre.

Dr. Monique Binks

Dr. Monique Binks graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 2001 with certification in therapeutic pharmaceutical agents. As part of her training, Dr. Binks completed an ocular disease and therapeutics externship at Omni Eye Specialists in Baltimore, Maryland which furthered her knowledge in corneal disease, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Dr. Paul Lamothe

Dr. Paul Lamothe, O.D. graduated from l'Université de Montréal, Optometry, in 2016. Being bilingual and a native of Sudbury, Paul is glad to return to his hometown and bring a full scope of optometric care to patients of all ages. During his years of studying optometry, Paul took the opportunity to expand his knowledge of ocular health and diseases with a 3-month externship at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre in Syracuse, New York.
