Ada Ward

One of Mrs. Ward's daughters lives nearby, and she likes the proximity to her family. She appreciates the sense of safety and security Huntington offers. "I'm very impressed … This is tops," she said. She moved into the Huntington in February from another assisted living community. Mrs. Ward is originally from Hampton, and was a buyer for Leggett department stores. She stepped away from that to bring up three children. Her late husband, Don Ward, worked for NASA on the Apollo space program. He spent much of 20 years commuting between NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton and Cape Canaveral, Florida. "It was a very exciting time for us," she said.

Amanda Martinez

Amanda, leads the nursing team at Northampton. She began her career with Virginia Health Services 13 years ago as an Assistant Director of Nursing and moved into the Infection Preventionist role. Before starting her career with VHS, Amanda worked at Memorial Medical Center of East Texas on the Medical/Surgical floor. She is grateful for the experience because it made her the nurse she is today. Amanda also was a CNA for 10 years before attending nursing school at Thomas Nelson Community College, graduating in 2005. In her spare time she enjoys running, biking, walking various trails in the area and weight lifting. She also enjoys spending time with her husband of more than 20 years and their two daughters. Amanda has had the pleasure of working with the elderly most of her nursing career. She takes great pride in knowing that she had a part in their rehabilitation and, at times, became their extended family. She believes nursing is at its best when the approach is holistic, knowing your residents and really listening to what they have to say. Including them in all aspects of their care makes for a more successful experience.

Amy Payne

Amy has been in long term care off and on for over 25 years as a nurse. The diversity of her background includes a term in Virginia Army National Guard, a business owner for 10 years, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Liaison for inpatient hospitals. She received her LPN degree in 1996, her bachelor's degree in Organizational Management (business) in 2013, and received an Executive Masters of Business Administration from VCU in 2020. Amy has three adult children, a loving husband, and a precious grandson. Seeing Residents happy and receiving good quality care inspires her to continue advocating for their best interest in every way she can. Having the opportunity to guide positive change for Residents and team members, along with a strong support team and work-life balance, are just a few things that motivate her to continue working hard as an Assistant Administrator for VHS.

Ann Armstrong

Ann Armstrong, who instructed the apprenticeship classes on the Middle Peninsula, also is leaving. She joins Rappahannock Community College as an instructor for their Nurse Aide program and will lead instruction for their clinical LPN and RN programs. Armstrong has been a nurse for 23 years, and an instructor since 2017. She joined VHS about a year ago from Riverside.

Bonnie King

Bonnie King started with James River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 1996 (though she had a brief hiatus in 2000). "Me as a CNA, it's a calling for me. Every day I step in that door, I know that's where I'm supposed to be," she says.

Bryanna Rhodes

VHS Director of Education Bryanna Rhodes said the team at the EEE offers review sessions before Nurse Aide certification exams, which include a written test and mock skills assessments. Rhodes joined VHS in December as an educator after working six years as an acute care nurse in an emergency room. She was promoted to director of education a few months after starting. VHS Director of Education Bryanna Rhodes said often CNAs are the first person a Resident sees in the morning and the last person they see at night. CNAs are responsible for grooming care, helping Residents dress and a host of skills that put them on the frontlines of Resident care.

Bryant Hudgins

Bryant oversees the Team providing outstanding care to the Residents at Walter Reed Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He began his career with Virginia Health Services 25 years ago as a Certified Nursing Assistant. He continued his education at Rappahannock Community College earning his License as a Practical Nurse. During that time, he opened WRNRC's Page Rehabilitation Unit as head nurse while also working in the Managed Care Department. He transitioned to administration in 2016 after further education in business, operating VHS's Lancashire Division in Kilmarnock, Va. He was able to return his roots becoming Administrator at Walter Reed in 2019. Bryant is a Board member of the Rappahannock Foundation for the Arts handling its Youth outreach program. In his spare time, Bryant coaches the Virginia Venom 17u basketball team. He has two wonderful children. A daughter that enjoys art and a son that is a college basketball recruit. His wife is also in the medical field working as an RN for 20 years at an area hospital. Bryant stays motivated and takes joy in being able to provide care for the community in which he was born and raised.

Carrie Isaac

Carrie Isaac has worked as a CNA with VHS for 30 years at The Newport. What's kept her in her role for this long? "My motivation to care for people, love and take care of them … sometimes we're the last ones they see," she says. "The smiles on their face keeps me going." She is a Senior Ambassador and trains newcomers to the role. "You have to be a people person," Carrie says. "You have to care about people and treat them well. At the end of the day, when you leave here, know you've done your job well." Carrie says the focus on the Residents, even the smallest touch like taking care in how they are dressed and brushing their teeth, can help them have a better day. "It's rewarding to make them happy at the end of the day," she says. "They know. They know if you miss a step. When I'm off, I come back in and they say, ‘I missed you,' and that makes me feel good. That means a lot."

Christine Brooks

Brooks is the charge nurse for the Abingdon unit. Walter Reed Administrator Bryant Hudgins said once the revamped Memory Care unit opened earlier this year, Brooks really took ownership of the unit.

Dana Turner

Dana Turner, who is a CNA at York, was in the third cohort and graduated in July. She's still bubbly now, having passed her certification exam and fulfilling a dream decades in the making. After spending more than 10 years housekeeping in hospitality, she is working in senior care as a CNA. "I have wanted to do this forever, but I never could afford to not get paid 4-to-6 weeks taking a class. There wasn't a program like this," she said.

David Crosson - SVP

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. David has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Exercise Science and a Master's of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Old Dominion University. He began his career as a physical therapist in 1992. He was promoted to an Administrator / Director of a National Rehab provider in 1996. David joined VHS in 1999 as the Executive Director of rehab services. In 2016, he was promoted to Senior Vice President where he continues to have operational oversight of its rehab, homecare and hospice divisions.

Don Lundin

Don is responsible for all operations of the nursing homes, assisted living, and independent living facilities. He has served as an Administrator and Regional Director of Operations for over 30 years with national providers such as Marriott Senior Living Services, Sunrise Senior Living and Five Star Quality Care. Most recently, Don worked with Riverside Health System in their Lifelong Health Division. Don has served on various boards for long-term care providers in Michigan and Virginia, and has received several awards for quality. Don graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelor of Arts degree and The George Washington University with a Master's of Health Care Administration. He completed his administrative residency at The George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Don is married and enjoys spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren. One of Don's favorite quotes is from J. Willard Marriott: "Motivate them, train them, care about them, and make winners out of them … they'll treat the customers right. And if the customers are treated right, they'll come back." Don is excited and proud to serve with so many caring people in this industry. Working in this business is a calling for him. He often says he is blessed to be a blessing to others.

Donna Marchant Roof

Donna oversees Virginia Health Services' Home Health Care and Hospice divisions. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y,, and graduated from Norfolk State University where she received her MSW. Prior to joining VHS, she served as the Managing Director of Healthcare at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community. Prior to Atlantic Shores, she was the Service Line Administrator for Post-Acute Care at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, which included home health, hospice, palliative care and Transition Care Clinic. In her spare time, Donna enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, kayaking and hiking.

Eric holds an MBA from the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business and a B.S. in Health Policy and Administration from Penn State University. When he is not working, Eric is usually training for a marathon or spending time with his wife, son, daughter and the family's Dachsador. Eric is passionate about caring for seniors. He is driven to help make VHS an innovative, industry leading provider of integrated care supporting individuals living their best life.

Erin Mathis

Erin joined the VHS team as an Administrative Secretary in 2017, and has recently moved to the position of Assistant Administrator at Northampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. Erin has lived in the Hampton Roads area all her life, and finds joy in serving her community. Her previous community service with at-risk and special needs populations has prepared her for the patient centered care ideology to which all VHS facilities ascribe. After receiving her Bachelor's Degree from Bluefield College, Erin discovered that caring for the long-term community, both its residents and their families, is where her passion lies. During her spare time, Erin enjoys spending time with her family. Erin Mathis is the Assistant Administrator. She wore many hats in several roles at Northampton prior to her promotion.

Everette White

Everette White is glad to not have to move. After spending a career in the Air Force, he retired after being stationed at Langley AFB in Hampton and has called The Huntington home since October 2015. He was an entomologist for the Air Force, retiring in 1970 after 21.5 years of service. He then worked in pest control and fumigation in Hampton. He served in Korea and Vietnam, and he and his family - late wife Mary, a son and two daughters - lived in the Midwest, Morocco, Oklahoma, Germany and Spain during his time in the Air Force. "We traveled all over Europe," he said of their being stationed abroad.

Haley Holland

Heather Duncan

Heather leads all brand building, marketing and community partnerships for Virginia Health Services. Prior to joining VHS, she spent over 12 years as Director of Corporate Marketing and Branding for Dollar Tree. Before joining Dollar Tree, she held various marketing roles with McDonald's Corporation and its advertising agencies. Heather graduated from Longwood College with a B.S. in Business Administration, Marketing concentration. She serves on the board of trustees of the Virginia Living Museum and is a member of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Marketing Association. In her spare time, Heather enjoys traveling to the Caribbean and spending time with her husband and two yellow Labrador Retrievers. Heather believes great leadership makes great teams and lives by the mantra "Lead by Example - Model the behavior you expect of others." Heather is passionate about promoting VHS in our local community and helping people understand the full spectrum of services VHS offers to help individuals live their best life.

JAMES RIVER

Evans, the Director of Nursing (DON) at James River Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, is on her third stint with VHS. She started with the company as an LPN in the 1980s. Evans was a trainer on the VHS education team, overseeing York, Gloucester and Lancashire. When the drive became too much - "I no longer have to fill up every week" - she returned as DON at James River in February 2021. Jennifer leads the quality and clinical reimbursement initiatives for Virginia Health Services. She graduated from Mary Baldwin College with a BA in Health Care Administration and immediately started her career with VHS. Jennifer was Past President of the Junior League of Hampton Roads and remains a sustaining member. She is a member of the Hampton Roads Garden Club, Impact 100 and is involved in numerous other community organizations. Jennifer's guiding principle is, "Quality is not an act, it is a habit." From Aristotle. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time at the beach with her two daughters. Jennifer Dick, the VHS Vice President of Quality and Clinical Revenue Integrity, celebrates her 25th service anniversary this month. Jesse joined Virginia Health Services in 2002 to manage the construction and opening of The Arbors independent living community. His responsibilities have included the operation of The Arbors along with planning and development of VHS renovations and new construction. Before joining VHS, Jesse spent eight years at Kingsmill Resort managing homeowner associations, condominiums, resort memberships, and the planning, design and construction of resort amenities. Jesse graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Environmental Design/Architecture. (Go Pack!) She began her career with Virginia Health Services 25 years ago as a Licensed Practical Nurse on the skilled unit where she held various positions. Lana continued her growth within the company while simultaneously completing her Registered Nurse Program. In May 2020, she was promoted to Director of Nursing at Walter Reed Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Prior to joining Virginia Health Services, she worked for Wake Medical Trauma Center in Raleigh, North Carolina and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Va. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter and five furry friends. Lana enjoys the geriatric population and long-term care nursing as she feels the generation has so much to give and believes to be true a quote by Maya Angelou, "They may forget your name but they will never forget how you made them feel."

Mark F. Klyczek - CEO, President

Mark leads the operations and sets the strategic direction for all lines of service within Virginia Health Services. Prior to joining VHS, Mark spent 25 years in Health Systems in Upstate New York, serving in roles within long-term care, home care, oncology, hospital administration and physician practice management. Mark graduated from D'Youville College with a M.S. in Health Services Administration, and Canisius College with a B.A. in Psychology and a certificate in Gerontology. He is also a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives. Mark has served on various boards for community organizations and has been a member of various committees for hospital and nursing home associations, in addition to speaking nationally at conferences. In his spare time, Mark enjoys traveling with his family and enjoying the many activities available in Virginia. Mark believes Leadership's role is to grow our people and support the patients we serve. Mark is passionate about ensuring VHS supports our local community through a great workforce who in turn can deliver excellent care and an excellent experience. He begins by tackling the problems that are off by just a single percent or less. After he notices the trends, he will approach the staff and ask: "What are the barriers? How do I help you improve pressure ulcers, because we're seeing it happens more often with this type of patient?" Klyczek makes sure to get as much information to the Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) as possible to enable them to make the best decisions.

Marva Hodges

She is a restorative aide part-time, but a majority of time, she says she's on the floor because of staffing. She's an Elite Ambassador, and has been a senior aide on the Ward unit, and was a nursing secretary and unit secretary. As an Elite Ambassador, she had to do the restorative program and trains Care Assistants and new Nurse Aides, and assists with orientation. "I'm really a people person, not really a desk person," she says. "I love the patients, I like being in the mix with them." Marva says she can go on any unit in the building and "pretty much anyone knows who I am, just by my eyes (because the mask covers so much of her face)."

Mary Jones

Mary Jones, the dietary manager at Northampton, is semi-retiring. She'll work three days a week after being "married" to VHS.

Michael Polite

Michael Polite is a Nurse Aide at James River Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. He started in environmental services at James River, then enrolled in the apprenticeship program. He says he was drawn to senior care after helping care for his grandmother. The September graduate is studying for the state boards, and is confident he'll pass because of his training with VHS instructor Nora Gillespie. The training program includes classwork and learning 22 clinical skills. "You use everything she teaches you," he said of his daily routine. "She really emphasizes dignity and respect, and so if I can put a smile (on a Resident's face), when I walk out of the room, I feel like I've done my job."

Michelle Smith

Michelle Smith is the Director of Nursing at The Newport. She has been with VHS for 30 years. Smith started with VHS right out of high school as a CNA. "I always knew I wanted to do nursing, so I wanted to get my feet in there to see if this is really what I liked. I was a CNA, and then I went to LPN school, and then immediately to RN school," she said. The Newport is one of the smaller nursing and rehabilitation centers under the Virginia Health Services umbrella. With 60 beds, Smith says the size allows the team to connect to the Residents and to the team members. "I just love being able to talk and relate to the patients, getting to know about them and their history and their stories," Smith said. "Getting to build that relationship with them and also then getting to see them get the therapy that they need. Many of them get better, have a positive outcome and go back home to keep on living their life. It's just very rewarding."

Nancy Funkhouser

And it's a job she loves. Funkhouser is a physical therapist with VHS Rehabilitation whose patients are all coordinated through VHS Home Health Care. The team's consistency allows individuals to see the same faces, "which is always better for overall patient recovery," Funkhouser said. Status changes can be identified and dealt with quickly when you and your team members know a patient. And the more you see them, the more they get to know you. "When I'm with them, I give them as much as I can in the time we have," she says.

Natasha Christian

Natasha supervises and coordinates the operations department at WRCRC. She graduated from Norfolk State University, earning her B.S. in Health Services Management. She obtained her Master's from the University of Maryland University College in Human Resource Management and completed the Administrator in Training Program with Riverside. She has over 10 years of experience with seniors through long-term care, community-based services and patient advocacy. She serves on the board of the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center. In her spare time, she enjoys producing and writing productions, as well as traveling, spending time with family, and caring for her Yorkshire Terrier Mr. Wiz. Natasha is very passionate about her love for seniors and in the words of Maya Angelou, "Dignity really means that I deserve the best treatment I can receive and I have the responsibility to give the best treatment I can to other people."

Nikki Boldy - CFO

Nikki is responsible for managing all financial aspects of Virginia Health Services. A Newport News native, Nikki began working for Virginia Health Services while still in college. She graduated Cum Laude from Christopher Newport University in 1996 with a BSBA in Business Administration, Accounting concentration and became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in 2000. Nikki has held various positions in her tenure with Virginia Health Services and was most recently promoted to Chief Financial Officer. She is a member of the AICPA and VSCPA and serves on the Payment for Services Committee for the Virginia Health Care Association. In her spare time, Nikki enjoys spending time in the Outer Banks with her husband, twin boys and black Labrador Retriever, Kali. As Steve Jobs once said "Great things in business are never done by one person; they're done by a team of people," and Nikki believes that teamwork is one of the strengths of Virginia Health Services.

Nikki oversees the team providing exceptional care to the residents of Northampton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. A native of York County, she began her career in Healthcare Management over 20 years ago. She graduated Cum Laude from Norfolk State University with a B.S. in Health Services Management with a concentration on Food, Science and Nutrition. Nikki joined VHS in 2006 as an Assistant Administrator working at several of our convalescent and rehabilitation facilities. In 2013, she was promoted to the Administrator of York Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and served in this role until 2016. After working the past several years as a Regional Operations Manager for a Multispecialty Physician Group, she rejoined the VHS team. She realized that her true passion is in servicing the residents and staff in our long-term care communities and believes that to be successful is understanding that "what you do is far greater than what you say" from Stephen Covey. In her spare time, Nikki enjoys traveling and spending time on the water with her family and their rainbow of rescued labs. Nikki Clements is coming up on a year as Administrator. This is her second turn with Virginia Health Services. She says her true passion is serving the Residents and staff in our long-term care communities and believes that to be successful is understanding that "what you do is far greater than what you say" from Stephen Covey. Nora Gillespie

Nora said the program has given long-time CNAs a chance to see what new hires are learning, which can better prepare them to train them on the floor and what areas to work with them on to improve their skills. "It's good when the staff comes in to participate and give their insight," she said. Instructor Nora Gillespie said she was like bubbles and champagne, with her positivity just radiating out toward the Residents she worked with on the floor during clinicals. Princess Henderson is learning how to teach the apprenticeship class from instructor Nora Gillespie. Virginia Health Services' fifth cohort of CNA apprentices graduates Oct. 26, 2021. "The program has evolved. It's come out of the ‘Dark Ages.' It's so much better and easier to understand. … I did it back when you had to pay for the class." Instructor Nora Gillespie is congratulated by the fourth class of graduates during a ceremony in September.

Rebecca Boyd

Rebecca began her career with VHS in 1992 after graduating from Riverside School of Practical Nursing. A native of Newport News, she continued to pursue nursing education and received her degree in nursing from The University of the State of New York in 1997. After a brief time in an acute care setting, she returned to VHS in 1999 as the Director of Nursing at The Newport. She continued working as a Director of Nursing at two other facilities, including York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center, until she moved into the Director of Quality Assurance role for VHS in 2013, then was promoted to the Director of Nursing Operations for the Peninsula facilities in 2013 and Director of Nursing Operations for all VHS facilities in 2015. Rebecca, in 2020, was promoted to Vice President of Nursing.

Robert E. Walters

Dr. Walters oversees an exceptional team of clinicians at Virginia Health Services, continuing to enhance the quality of care provided to our Residents. He also serves as the Medical Director for Virginia Health Hospice and maintains an active practice as an attending physician so that his perspectives remain well-rooted in patient care. Dr. Walters received his M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Geriatrics Fellowship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. He is accordingly board-certified in both Internal and Geriatric Medicine and is also a Certified Medical Director with the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. As his father always said, "Think for yourself." This teaching has helped him become an innovative leader and avoid taking things for granted.

Rose Marie Hopkins

Rose Marie Hopkins joined The Hamilton community in October 2019. She moved in following the passing of her husband, Gerald Ray Hopkins in July 2019. Gerald Ray was the love of her life - they were married for 74 years. Mrs. Hopkins was born in 1928 in Seaford, Virginia, to a Chesapeake Bay waterman and a stay-at-home mom. Her childhood was spent going to school, playing in the creek and spending time with friends and family. She graduated from Jeffs High School in 1944 and was named "Prettiest Girl" by her senior classmates. (Jeffs is now Poquoson High School). Back in those days, there were no high schools in York County so Mrs. Hopkins had to travel to Poquoson to complete her education. After graduating high school, Mrs. Hopkins went to work for the federal government at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. She learned bookkeeping and was hired to work for the Office of the Comptroller. After the birth of her four children, Mrs. Hopkins stayed home to care for her family for the next 25 years. When her youngest child was 12, she returned to her career at the Office of the Comptroller and was ultimately promoted to Supervisor. Mrs. Hopkins' life has always been focused on three things: faith, family and food. Her family was a source of joy but also a lot of work! She has always been the backbone of the family, providing loving care and support as her family grew and thrived. Her cooking ability is legendary and she passed on many of her skills in the kitchen to her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Hopkins is also a devout Christian and spent many years working in her church, conducting the children's choir, singing with the adult choir, working with the annual church bazaar and serving on many committees. She has been a member of Zion United Methodist her entire life and still attends services there. We are glad to help Mrs. Hopkins call The Hamilton in York County home. She enjoys the outings to restaurants and museums, and visits from her loved ones.

Tammy Gabel

Tammy leads the day-to-day accounting operations for Virginia Health Services. A Kansas native, she moved to Virginia in 1988 while her husband was active duty in the armed forces. She actively supported military wives during countless military deployments as well as raising two children before joining the Virginia Health Services family. Tammy started with VHS in 2003 as a junior accountant and later graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration, Accounting concentration, in 2006. In her spare time, Tammy enjoys spending time with her husband, two kids, one grandson and three rescued greyhounds. Tammy believes in the work-life balance and lives by the saying, "Don't worry about failure, worry about chances you miss when you don't try." Tammy enjoys supporting the VHS mission and working with an outstanding team.

Vikram Rajashekara

Vikram leads the VHS Pharmacy team that serves nursing and rehabilitation centers, assisted living communities and Hospice at Virginia Health Services. His team is committed to deliver the best care to the Residents. He has been a licensed pharmacist in Virginia for over 16 years at a retail community setup rendering excellent patient care. His passion toward patient care has helped him build a professional reputation in the community. Prior to this, he worked has a research fellow at Mass General Hospital in affiliation to Harvard Medical School. Vikram obtained his B.S in pharmacy and pursed his M.S in pharmacology at St. John's College of Pharmacy in New York. He has published his research in many scientific journals. He is also APhA certified immunizing pharmacist, representing a fusion in science and clinical pharmacy. In his spare time, Vikram loves listening to audiobooks, mountain biking, taking care of his koi pond, and spends time with his wife and the twins. Vikram truly believes in team building strategies to execute the best care to the local communities through VHS.

WALTER REED

Walter Reed Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a 180-bed facility located in Gloucester. It has semi-private and private accommodations, including 51 beds dedicated to Memory Care. Our nursing team is available around-the-clock, and there are onsite rehabilitation facilities.

Wendy Malvin

Originally from Morehead City, N.C., Mrs. Malvin moved to Newport News when she married her husband, a native of the area, after attending Mary Washington College. "I love being in Newport News. It's been my home a long time," she said. She was a legal secretary for the law firm of Jones, Blechman, Woltz and Kelly for more than 30 years. She also took on a volunteer administrative director role with People to People, an organization founded by one of the attorneys, Herbert V. Kelly, current Newport News Mayor McKinley Price and other civic leaders in 1992. People to People worked to improve race relations in the city. Mrs. Malvin was featured in the Daily Press in February 2001 after being honored with People to People's first Hero Award for her service to the organization. She keeps the clip framed in her apartment at The Huntington.
