Alok Shukla

Alok Shukla is an Assistant Professor in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences division of the School of Arts and Sciences at Ahmedabad University. He received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, and a MA and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Oklahoma, USA. He was selected for several scholarship awards by the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma during his PhD, including the John Clark Brixey Graduate Scholarship award in 2015, and the Richard V. Andree Memorial Scholarship awards for academic excellence in 2016 and 2017. After receiving his PhD in 2018, Professor Shukla joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba, Canada, as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies in Mathematics, Professor Shukla worked for HAL (Hindustan Aeronautical Limited) for several years, first on the Avionics system of MiG-27 fighter aircraft, and later in the final assembly section of ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), Dhruv. He learned the basics of Aeronautical Engineering in a special one-semester programme at IIT, Madras in 2004. He has also worked as a software engineer for IBM and TCS, for about a year in each organisation. In addition to research in Mathematics, he enjoys teaching the subject to students. Professor Shukla has organised several maths-popularisation and community outreach events to spread the ‘Joy of Mathematics' among young students.

Professor Balaji Prakash studied Physics at the University of Hyderabad and made a transition to Biology at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where he obtained his PhD. After a successful postdoctoral stint at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Germany, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur as one of the founding faculty of the department of Biological Sciences in 2002. In 2015, he relocated to CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore (CFTRI), to head the newly created interdisciplinary department - the Department of Molecular Nutrition. Darshini Mahadevia is a well-known scholar whose research focuses on equity concerns within urban policies relating to climate change adaptation, mitigation, and human and general development. She received her doctoral degree in Urban and Regional Development from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prior to joining Ahmedabad University, she coordinated the Centre for Urban Equity and was the Dean of the Faculty of Planning at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. In particular, Professor Mahadevia's research has focused on cities and the policies and processes of their development from an equity perspective. She argues for a bi-focal view to assess the impact of the modernist, deterministic, and top-down approach adopted in Urban Planning on the economically, socially, and politically weak segments of society and the city's ecological resources. She is currently investigating urban data systems in the context of urban development dynamics, their sustainability, and equity. She also is a member of the High-Level Committee on Status of Women, India. Professor Mahadevia has also been an Editorial Board Member of the International Development Planning Review - Journal of the University of Liverpool, Environment, and Urbanization - Asia, since 2019, and Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography since 2017. She has been an Advisory Board Member for Safetypin and WRI Ross Centre Prize for Cities since 2020. Professor Mahadevia has over 120 publications as books, book chapters, and journal articles. At Ahmedabad University this year, she is teaching a course on urban finance, and is part of two interdisciplinary courses -- one on the city of Ahmedabad and the other on neighbourhoods.

Professor Deepak Kunzru recently retired as Professor of Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur where he was a faculty since 1974. He was earlier the Chevron Chair Professor at IIT Kanpur. He was a Visiting Professor in the Dept.of Chemical Engineering, MIT, U.S.A during Sept-Dec.2009.Professor Kunzru's main research interests are in the area of microstructured reactors, chemical reaction engineering, pyrolysis of hydrocarbons and petroleum processing. He has published more than 100 papers in reputed international journals and has edited one book. His current research focuses on the use of monolithic reactors for gas-liquid reactions and steam reforming of methane, production of hydrogen from ethanol in microchannel reactors and the development of catalysts for hydrodesulfurization.

Dr Naushad Forbes is an Indian Engineer and businessman. He is Co-chairman of Forbes Marshall, India's leading steam engineering and control instrumentation company, and was the President of the Confederation of Indian Industry (Cll) 2016-17. He is an active votary of energy conservation in industry, and has founded and started the annual Cll Energy Efficiency Summit and Awards for Excellence in Energy Management. He is also a reviewer of various international journals such as IEEE transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Mechanism and Machine Theory, IEEE Access, and Measurement. During his research career, he has developed various signal processing techniques to process the sensor signals such as vibration and acoustic emission signals acquired from rotating machines and pipelines to detect faults. Besides, he has successfully developed various fault-diagnosis methods based on AI techniques and machine learning algorithms. Recently, he has been awarded by DRDO, Government of India for demonstrating technology on early fault detection and remaining useful life prediction in aeroengine bearings. She is a folklorist by training and obtained her PhD from Moscow State University, Moscow, in Russian and Indian Folklore. Before joining Ahmedabad University, she was the Mission Director for the National Mission on Cultural Mapping, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, housed at the IGNCA. Molly Kaushal is former Professor and Head, Janapada Sampada Division at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi (IGNCA). During her career span of more than 30 years, she initiated several research initiatives, conceptualised, and supervised many field studies, surveys, and research projects at the IGNCA and was the Principal Investigator and Project Head, Living Traditions of the Ramayana and Mahabharata, an area where she has made significant contribution, building up a massive audio-visual archive, bringing out translations and publications, and creating a platform for a dialogue between the artists and scholars. She has done extensive research among the Gaddi, a sheep herding community of Himachal Pradesh, exploring concepts of space and time and engaging with areas ranging from domestic to pastoral spaces, ritual and performance, oral epics, and daily lifestyle. As a convenor of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) at the IGNCA, she engaged with several safeguarding projects in collaboration with UNESCO and was responsible for the preparation of nomination dossiers on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the 2nd and 3rd cycles. As part of this exercise, she rediscovered and revitalised the almost extinct tradition of Ramman, a ritual theatre of Garhwal Himalayas based on the Ramayana, establishing a community-run cultural resource centre in collaboration with community representatives and state stakeholders. She also initiated the compilation of the first web-based national inventory for ICH for the IGNCA. (ignca.nic.in). She is the curator of many research based thematic exhibitions and cultural festivals. She has also directed and scripted several ethnographic films.

Mona Mehta is Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Arts at the School of Arts and Sciences. She is a political scientist with research interests in urban transformations, democracy, and middle-class politics in the context of Gujarat and India at large. She is working on a book manuscript examining the cultural politics of urban transformations in post-liberalisation India. Her book will explore what we can learn about India's urbanisation by examining the trajectories of pastoralists or maldharis, who have increasingly settled into urban spaces, and their strategies to navigate the precarious urban informal economy. Her previous work explored the vulnerability and complicity of democratic and civic spaces in the production of exclusionary politics. She is also interested in the valuable insights that can be gained about complex social phenomena through the use of qualitative, especially interpretive and ethnographic research methods, in the social sciences. Professor Mehta has previously taught in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Scripps College in Claremont, USA (2010-2012) and the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2012-2020).
