Philip N. Tsichlis

It has just been announced that Philip N. Tsichlis, M.D. (Director of both the Tufts-NEMC Cancer Center and the Molecular Oncology Research Institute (MORI), and Jane F. Desforges Professor of Hematology and Oncology) has been elected to the Association of American Physicians (AAP). Dr. Tsichlis will be awarded full membership in the organization at the spring meeting in Chicago and joins the list of just 10 other Tufts-affiliated physicians to receive this honor. Please join us in offering sincere congratulations to Dr. Tsichlis for this recognition of his outstanding scientific work! Following graduation from the Medical School of the University of Athens, I trained in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and in Hematology at Tufts-NEMC. During my hematology training, under the guidance of inspiring teachers such as Drs. Robert Schwartz and Jane Desforges, I became interested in the biology of hematologic neoplasms. To pursue this interest, I did a postdoctoral Research Fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. John Coffin at Tufts University School of Medicine. My work in John's lab revealed that the major determinant of the retrovirus oncogenic potential resides in the proviral LTR and suggested an insertional mutagenesis model for retroviral oncogenesis. Subsequent studies in my own lab utilized insertional mutagenesis as a tool to identify genes involved in tumor induction and in phenotypic changes in tumor cells. Genes identified via this strategy were used as probes to explore function. My first independent lab was at the National Cancer Institute, and after moves to the Fox Chase and Kimmel Cancer Centers, I returned to Tufts-New England Medical Center in September 2002 to head the Molecular Oncology Research Institute and develop the Tufts-NEMC Cancer Center.
