Many American bluegrass fiddle tunes, as well as ballads, have their origins in old-time music associated with music out of the Appalachian Mountains, New England, Canada and some Southern and Mid-Western areas. However, many of these tunes roots came from Celtic history including the Irish, Scottish, English and Welsh cultures and traveled across the Atlantic Ocean to America. When the settlers came to America, not only did they play the old tunes and ballads, but new songs were composed that reflected their daily lives or events. Many of the reels, jigs, hornpipes and ballad names may have changed over the years, but the same tunes are still played today in the pubs in Ireland and at Bluegrass events across America... Bluegrass also had African-American influences, including the banjo itself, which added rich melodic invention into the tunes.
