Despite significant advancements in airborne lidar scan frequencies for the capture of dense point clouds, breaklines remain an important variable in digital terrain models (DTM). Breaklines are not only utilized in the DTM but are important to many geographical information systems (GIS) as part of a base map or a cornerstone to day-to-day GIS operations for many organizations. Many systems for generating terrain models, however, do not easily integrate with breaklines stored in native GIS databases, which create disconnects between breaklines used to generate surfaces and the GIS data that is delivered in a mapping project. Combined with on-the-fly surface generation, LP360, an extension for ArcGIS, leverages the technology of GIS to integrate breaklines, stored in native GIS databases, into terrain models generated from lidar point clouds.
