He specializes in Intellectual Property Law, in particular in Patent and Utility Model Law as well as in the associated areas of law, especially those relating to copyrights and unfair competition... Further main areas of his practice are the protection of reputation (e. g. Press Law) and Freedom of Information Law as well as the implications from Constitutional Law for all the aforementioned legal fields... Dr Stjerna has repeatedly represented constitutional complaints before the German Federal Constitutional Court ("BVerfG"). In response to his constitutional complaint, the BVerfG declared null and void the German ratification of the international Agreement on a Unified Patent Court in March 2020, for the first time granting the citizen a judicially enforceable right to "formal control" in respect of the transfer of sovereignty rights (docket no. 2 BvR 739/17, cf. also here).
