Architectural custom built furniture, commonly known as built-in furniture, has been around for a very long time. In this country, historic colonial homes have corner china cupboards in the dinning room. The Shakers of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine, were famous for their halls lined with cabinets, drawers, and shelving built into the walls. During the craftsman period of the early nineteen hundreds built-in bookcases, writing tables, inglenooks, kitchen cabinets, and sideboards were all part of the finish work performed by the builder. Later Frank Lloyd Wright included lots of functional built-ins such as window seats and wall benches that matched his unique architectural style. No matter what time in history you look at you will find people have put the structure of their house to good use by making some of the furniture an integral part of it... New Hampshire..
