Andrew Hammond

Andy joined Sussex Development in 2008, with a goal to get back into the field and out of the office. Andy spent five years as a Project Manager on municipal earthmoving and underground utility projects, then seven years as a Project Manager for small commercial construction projects. Andy, a member of Green Acres Presbyterian Church, enjoys gardening, carpentry, and renovating his home in Portsmouth, VA, with his wife and their four children during his free time.

Braun MacLachlan

Braun is a Virginia Beach native, with strong ties to our local community. He attended Colorado State University College of Natural Resources, Commercial Recreation and Tourism in 2002. He earned his Class A Contractors license in 2012 and was the recipient of the 2014 City of Virginia Beach Planning Commission Merit Award in the category of renovations and/or adaptive reuse. He joined his family's construction business as a superintendent in 2004, working up to be its president in 2012. The company's primary focus was in the design and development of new luxury homes and light commercial. He developed an interest in commercial construction leading him to pursue a commercial general contractor and joining Sussex Development as an assistant superintendent during the summer of 2018. After demonstrating his knowledge of construction and leadership skills, he was promoted to project superintendent and served in that capacity for many months before applying for a position with our office staff as a field engineer, a role which combines project engineering with estimating. He spent much of his life in the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia Beach Oceanfront. He is an avid surfer and fisherman who shares his love of surfing with a local organization helping mentally and physically challenged persons get on the waves.

Brenden Vachon

Brenden, a Hampton Roads native, entered the construction industry with Sussex Development during high school, starting as a field laborer. Through dedication and hard work, he advanced to become a skilled field carpenter and eventually earned a promotion to Assistant Superintendent, showcasing his commitment and leadership in construction projects. Outside of his professional life, Brenden serves as a Specialist in the Virginia Army National Guard, belonging to the 116th Infantry Group, Bravo Troop 2/183rd CAV. His military service reflects his dedication to the security of his country. Additionally, Brenden generously volunteers his time to the Virginia Beach SPCA, demonstrating a compassionate commitment to community service.

Christine Silva

Christine became a valuable member of the Sussex Team in 2023, joining the Accounting department. Hailing from Rhode Island, she brings a wealth of experience from her years as a construction administrator for a general contractor. Her educational background includes an A.S. in Business, reflecting her keen interest in the intersection of construction and business. Eager to apply her extensive knowledge to her role, Christine is dedicated to contributing to the success of the team. Having recently relocated to Hampton Roads, Christine embraces her new home by spending weekends exploring the area with her family on day trips. Whether discovering hidden gems or unwinding through crocheting and gardening, she values the balance between her professional and personal life.

Cindy Wells - CHRO

Cindy joined the Sussex Team in 2017 as our Administrative Assistant and has become an integral part of our daily life. She keeps the office running smoothly and earned the esteemed position of being our first Chief People Officer. She provides exceptional customer support and service throughout the entire organization and beyond our doors. Not only does Cindy serve the office in an administrative capacity, but she maintains team morale by exuding compassion, helpfulness, professionalism, and leadership to all employees. When Cindy isn't working, you can find her enjoying new adventures with family and friends, traveling, or curled up reading a good novel. She is passionate about serving her community and has served on several non-profit boards and is currently working with Special Olympics as a volunteer and coach.

Danielle Hangen

Danielle, a Virginia Beach native and graduate of Old Dominion University, joined Sussex Development in 2007 as a full-time Project Engineer. In 2014, she was promoted to Senior Project Engineer. In 2017, Danielle and her husband relocated to Napa, CA. Since moving, Danielle has been retained as a Consultant to our Project Engineering and Project Management departments. Before joining Sussex Development, she spent fifteen years in medical practice management. Desiring a change in venue, she took a job managing residential rehabilitation and construction projects, specializing in pre-engineered construction. She discovered a knack for logistics and the type of organization that's required in commercial construction. Throughout her tenure at Sussex, she has actively contributed to projects spanning from North Carolina to Northern Virginia, playing a pivotal role in some of the largest ventures undertaken by the company to date. Danielle is a strong supporter of environmental sustainability and education. Danielle and her husband are avid hikers. Since their relocation to Napa, Danielle has also begun undertaking an education in the science and history of California wine. She also volunteers at the Senior Center near her home in Napa and acts as an Ambassador for the City during special events.

Doug Brothers

Doug started with Sussex Development in the summer of 2018. He attended College of the Albemarle from 2012 to 2014. He is recently CQMC Certified, OSHA 30-Hour Certified as well as First Aid/AED/CPR Certified. Most of his construction career has been in the Elizabeth City area of North Carolina, working on a variety of commercial construction projects in the capacities of foreman, superintendent and project manager.

Doug Romeo

Doug has more than 40 years in construction and specializes in larger scale new construction projects, including schools. He has worked on a variety of military building projects, one which attained LEED Gold certification. Doug is a responsible land disturber, completed training with the Virginia DEQ in storm water management for contractors and operators, and completed the US Army Corp of Engineers Construction Quality Management for Contractors #784. He is OSHA 30 hour and first aid/AED/CPR certified. Doug joined Sussex Development in the spring of 2017, where he has continued to work as part of our ground-up construction team. Doug enjoys spending as much time outside as possible and if often found on golf course, fishing, hunting or in his garden.

Dylan Ayers

Dylan began his construction career at the age of 14 by renovating a residential property with his father and brother. He went on to attend college on an academic scholarship, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science. During 2020, Dylan revisited the field of construction, reaffirming his passion. He proceeded to refine his residential construction skill set, managed several small residential projects, and completed a home renovation. Dylan was hired on at Sussex as a carpenter in July 2021 and has quickly moved to a Superintendent role. Initially, Dylan focused on managing punchout for Senior Superintendents, but has transitioned to managing projects independently. In his spare time, Dylan enjoys fishing with his dad or going camping.

Gary Olander

Gary has worked for various engineering and construction companies, gaining experience in site and building design, as well as performing field engineering in heavy marine construction. With his vast experience, he formed his own business where he worked as an Independent Contractor for 20 years building a variety of structures along with renovating homes and businesses. Gary was born and raised on Cape Cod. The Cape gave Gary a love for sailing & the ocean and New Hampshire a love for skiing. Gary enjoys spending time with his wife Marcy, good friends, and with their Golden-Doodle, Riley.

Harry L. Davis, III - President

Harry is a Virginia Beach native with strong ties to the local community. In 1978, he graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction. Before founding Sussex Development in 1990, Harry began his construction career as a Project Engineer on multi-million-dollar projects, such as the State of Georgia Prison Hospital Complex, working his way up to Vice-President for a large general contractor. Harry firmly believes in a commitment to family, community and the construction industry. He currently serves on the Second Century Committee at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. He has served the Associated General Contractors of Virginia in various capacities, including President of both the state and local chapters and is currently on the board of the Builders & Contractor's Exchange, and served as its President in 2018. Harry is an avid supporter of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters, and the Wounded Warrior Program, along with other area youth and military groups.

Herb Alexander

Jason has dedicated his career to project management in all facets of general contracting. His focus has been on environmental remediation, interior/exterior renovation, large-scale mechanical system upgrades, and new construction. He has a keen eye for detail and focus on MPE specialized programs; with a special focus on identifying project deficiencies and developing solutions for the entire project. Jason has proven to be a dedicated asset within our project management team as he also exudes exemplary leadership in mentoring, coaching, and performance improvement.

Jeff Hegedus

Originally hailing from Muskegon, MI, Jeff brings a wealth of experience from his years in the commercial construction industry. With a focus on framing, concrete work, pre-engineered steel buildings, and finish carpentry, Jeff honed his skills while specializing in hospital/medical and retail projects. In 2017, he made the transition to Virginia and became a valued member of the Sussex Team. Outside of work, Jeff enjoys golfing, hunting, and woodworking, embracing outdoor activities and creative projects. Jeff's greatest pleasure, however, comes from spending quality time with his children and granddaughter during visits to his hometown in Michigan.

Jeff Ocker

Jeff is a cornerstone of Sussex Development, having been part of the team since 1990. His journey began with a focus on carpentry at Virginia Beach VoTech during high school, followed by successful completion of an apprenticeship program sponsored by the Association of General Contractors. Through dedication and hard work, Jeff rose through the ranks to become a Senior Project Superintendent. With a hands-on approach to field activities, Jeff's expertise spans various construction areas. His ability to visualize contract drawings and foresee the construction process enables him to adeptly identify and solve challenges, making him a valuable asset to the team. Jeff's extensive experience has made him one of our most esteemed Project Superintendents, serving as a mentor to our younger field staff. Throughout his tenure, Jeff has overseen multiple notable projects, including those for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads, College of the Albemarle Aviation Training Center, and the Widgeon Professional Center, which houses Sussex Development's corporate office. Outside of work, Jeff can be found at Sandbridge Beach or Buxton, NC surf fishing or hanging out at Cape Woods Campground.

Jim Vachon

Jim grew up in Maine and later settled in Hampton Roads during his time in the U.S. Navy. Early in his career, he worked in the City of Norfolk Planning office as a Senior Plan Reviewer. He then spent the next 20+ years as a Project Manager overseeing a vast portfolio of projects in commercial, federal, multi-family, and healthcare arenas from Virginia to as far away as Georgia and Texas. Jim is a Board member for DBIA Hampton Roads Chapter and the board President for 2024. He is a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Engineering Department at Old Dominion University. He is an appointed member of the Historical Review Board for the City of Virginia Beach. Jim spends his free time with his wife and four kids and is an avid fan of New England sports teams.

Joe Henricks

Joe is a seasoned Safety Professional with extensive experience, with 35 combined years as a Safety Director, safety engineer, construction manager, estimator, quality control inspector, and environmental health technician. He has authored Safety, Health and Environment programs for private and public entities that include Process Safety Management (PSM), environmental programs and permits, general industry, insurance and loss control, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training and compliance, Facilities Maintenance and Operations Training and Compliance programs and other regulatory compliance programs. His specialties include Construction Safety Management, Risk Management, Behavior Based Safety, Process Safety Management, Environmental Remediation, Workers Compensation, Claims Management, Contractor/Vendor Management, Cleanroom Technology, Emergency Management, and Public Health. Joe joined Sussex in 2023 as our Safety Director and has quickly integrated his skills and expertise in the office and in the field, sharing his vast knowledge with the Sussex team and beyond. He is a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals of the Greater Tidewater Chapter.

Justin Grenzebach

Justin actively contributes to community-driven urban planning projects such as BridgePark RVA, a linear park initiative in Richmond that emphasizes existing community resources. His involvement extends to creative community engagement through graphic design and curating public events. Additionally, Justin recently participated in the establishment of Plain Jane Garage, a local motorcycle shop in Norfolk. His contributions include graphic design for social media and hands-on work in restoring a vintage motorcycle he owns.

Katherine Landers

Katherine Landers joined the Sussex Team in November 2021. With a solid 14-year tenure at an environmental abatement/demolition company in Chesapeake, Katherine started as a receptionist and worked her way up to Project Administrator, helping to oversee day-to-day operations. She later transitioned to a pivotal role as Purchasing Manager for a homebuilder in Virginia Beach. Katherine's role as Pre-Construction Administrator requires her to manage all incoming Invitations to Bid, all Requests for Proposals and Qualifications, as well as our entire Subcontractor / Vendor Prequalification program. This requires her to wear many different hats, from handling a complete review of all new project packages to understanding and managing all available subcontractors and vendors that serve the Mid-Atlantic region. She virtually has her hands in every project Sussex delivers. Katherine is from San Diego and moved to Virginia in 1998 as her father was in the Navy. She graduated from Great Bridge High School and secured her first position in construction soon after. Katherine is also a Director and Membership Chair for the NAWIC Chapter of Greater Tidewater 137. Beyond her professional commitments, she enjoys exploring Virginia Beach and other Hampton Roads areas during weekends.

Keith Ayers

Keith began working residential construction projects part-time in high school. He developed a passion for the industry and made the switch to commercial projects when he began working full-time. He has a reputation for completing quality projects on schedule, regardless of their size or style. Keith is experienced in a wide array of projects: educational, medical, retail, restaurants, banks. Additionally, Keith was one of the Superintendents on two multimillion-dollar LEED Platinum Projects. His aptitude for technology led him to become a leader for Sussex Development's Superintendent Team in ways to maximize the benefits of having iPads on job sites. He enjoys a challenge and appreciates the complexity of many of the projects that he has completed for Sussex. On the job site, this attitude helps him work with design professionals, Owners, and subcontractors to overcome obstacles. Outside of work, Keith and his eldest son invested in land in North Carolina, striving to transform it into a pecan orchard. By Spring 2024, their objective is to have 400 trees planted, with the ultimate goal set at nearly 900 trees.

Keith Selby

Keith has been a valued member of the Sussex Development Team since 2001. He began working in construction as a journeyman carpenter after high school. Throughout his career, Keith sought to learn all aspects of leading a successful construction project. He is an accomplished team leader on projects ranging from the smallest, 1,000 SF renovation to multi-phase, ground-up projects. In recent years, Keith has focused on medical projects and plays a lead role in our work for Sentara Healthcare & Sentara Medical Group - with a heavy emphasis on specialized MEP construction and medical-grade work. He is sensitive to the needs of these projects, frequently in daily contact with medical staff and patients. In addition to being a valued member of our Team, Keith possesses a strong sense of community and giving. At 13, he began volunteering as a firefighter for Hampton Volunteer Fire Department. In his free time, he and his family are avid campers and enjoy the outdoors.

Kevin Kee

Kevin Kee is an experienced Estimator with a background in construction and engineering. Raised in Chesapeake, Virginia, Kevin was homeschooled throughout high school, where he learned carpentry and mechanics from his father. Kevin's career started in general contracting, working his way up from project engineer to project manager. He transitioned to estimating due to his passion for understanding construction costs. Currently serving as an Estimator at Sussex, Kevin specializes in building renovation and systems upgrades. Outside of work, Kevin prioritizes spending time with his family. He enjoys 3D printing.

Lee Sawyer

Lee started his construction career when he was 15, dedicating weekends, vacations, and holidays during high school to garner hands-on experience. Lee's professional trajectory includes four years as an electrical apprentice, a stint as a civil service drafter for four years, a year dedicated to acoustical ceilings, and a decade honing his skills as a cabinet craftsman. Prior to joining Sussex Development, Lee successfully owned and operated his construction company, specializing in commercial renovations and build-outs for various retail establishments. His residential division achieved remarkable milestones, constructing over 100 homes, with one earning a Home-A-Rama award. A valued Sussex Team member since 2004, he specializes in medical project renovations, having completed dozens of projects for the area's leading health care providers. LeeAnn Old - CFO

Before joining Sussex Development, LeeAnn worked for 17 years with a large Virginia Beach-based mechanical contractor. She began in an administrative support role and spent several years in an accounting position before leaving to pursue college where she obtained a B.A. in Business Management and Accounting. LeeAnn joined Sussex Development in 2006 and quickly implemented methods to track job costs more accurately, allowing for better reporting and final project cost auditing. In 2009, she was promoted to Controller, and named Chief Financial Officer in 2018. She is responsible for all financial and accounting operations of the company, including risk management and human resources. In 2011, LeeAnn passed the Certified Construction Industry Financial Professionals (CCIFP) exam to become one of the first individuals certified in the State of Virginia specializing in construction accounting. She is an active member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA). LeeAnn finds joy in baking, flower arranging, and pottery classes, sharing her creations with loved ones. She also loves beach days and unwinding with her son, family, and friends, simply enjoying each other's company.

Lewis Hardin

Lewis is a seasoned Project Manager boasting extensive experience across various facets of the construction industry. His skill set encompasses Project Management, Pre-Construction, Estimating, and Quality Control, with a track record that spans a diverse range of projects. Lewis has successfully navigated through assignments in Hospitality, Educational, Institutional, Federal Government, Industrial, Fueling Systems, Office, Restaurant, and Retail Facilities. A proud Navy veteran, Lewis dedicated six years of service as an Electronics Technician, followed by continued commitment in the Tennessee Army National Guard while pursuing and obtaining a B.S. in Construction Management during his college years. McKenzie Waters

McKenzie is a newcomer to Sussex Development, having grown up in Enumclaw, WA, a small town about 45 minutes South of Seattle. She went to Washington State University for Business Administration and has worked in various industries until securing a position in the construction field. She started in the asphalt and concrete division before shifting to a position for a General Contractor about 5 years ago. She comes from a family of superintendents and engineers, so working in construction was an easy transition. Her experience has been mostly large federal projects, design-build and renovations specializing in lowincome housing and community development. She moved to Virginia Beach in August of 2021. She looks forward to exploring her new hometown and making connections.

Melissa Rannigan

Melissa joined the Sussex Development team in the summer of 2018 as an Accounting Assistant. In October 2020, Melissa obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from the Florida Institute of Technology while working full time. Shortly after graduating, Melissa was promoted to Accounting Specialist. She is also a certified Construction Risk Insurance Specialist and a Virginia Notary. Melissa has exemplary computer and administrative skills. Her accuracy and attention to detail, along with her eagerness to tackle any challenge has made her an invaluable asset to Sussex Development. Melissa is a Vermont native who moved to Virginia in 2014. Outside of work Melissa is actively involved in various animal rescue organizations throughout the Hampton Roads area. She spends her free time drawing, painting, and gardening. She also enjoys exploring Virginia attractions with her boyfriend, their pet husky, friends, and family.

Mike Rankin

Mike joined Sussex in 2019 with over 20 years of construction and facilities management experience. Initially a Superintendent, he sought involvement in various projects. He was offered the position of Property Maintenance Technician and since has become an entrusted and valued Sussex Team member. Mike manages routine property upkeep and is in charge of many critical repairs in our Warranty and Client Services departments. His effective communication and collaboration have fostered strong relationships with clients, vendors, and within the organization. Mike is a Hampton Roads native, who has lived in Newport News all his life. He is a jack of all trades who also likes to tinker with cars, go to amusement parks, and explore the Hampton Roads area.

Nick Lopez

Nick is a native of Long Island, New York, who started his construction career in Iron Workers Union Local 580 in Brooklyn, NY. In the 1980s he made a move to the Carpenters Union Local 135 on the East Side and enjoyed many years working on projects throughout the five New York City boroughs such as The Waldorf Astoria, Yankee Stadium, United Nations building, the Twin Towers, Empire State Building, Fillmore East, Gap for Kids, and Barnes and Noble bookstores. In the early 1990s, Nick and his family moved to Virginia Beach where he pursued custom residential homes, multifamily, and commercial projects, leading him to travel the United States building hotels and restaurants. Nick joined Sussex Development in 2019 as a project superintendent and has become a valuable and trusted team member, handling multiple out of the ground projects. Nick volunteers at two local churches, providing assistance with home repairs, food distribution, and prescription deliveries. Additionally, he participates in several annual charity rides with the Hampton Roads Harley Davidson Group and is an active member of the Central Park Society, contributing to fundraising events for the preservation of historical sites. Nick enjoys spending time with family, golfing, fishing, kayaking, bocce ball, cooking, and shopping.

Rolley Davis - VP

Rolley was born into the construction industry, so it was a natural fit when choosing his career path. Growing up, he spent many hours at Sussex Development learning from his father, interning in the office and field throughout high school and college. While in college he was a volunteer fire fighter for the Eastern Pines, NC Volunteer Fire Department and visited China in 2008, touring the region's ancient and modern architecture. Since joining the Sussex Development Team full time in 2009, as an Assistant Superintendent then Project Superintendent, he gained substantial hands-on experience with ground up construction projects and oversaw many specialized medical renovations and build outs. After working as a Project Manager for several years, Rolley was promoted to Vice President and is the Preconstruction Manager and coordinates our Clients Service program. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the Association of General Contractors of Virginia.

Ron McVey

Hailing from Portsmouth, Virginia, Ron's roots took hold in California, where he cultivated over 28 years of construction expertise. Commencing his journey as a member of the carpenters union, Ron dedicated himself to mastering the intricacies of structural and non-structural framing, refining his skills in finishes. Following a stint with a commercial construction company, Ron made his way back to the East Coast. Here, he went to work for a drywall company, enriching his already diverse skill set. In 2022, Ron joined the Sussex Team, where he continues to make significant contributions.

Ryan Maxwell

A Virginia Beach local, Ryan's roots intertwine with the construction industry from a young age. With a grandfather at the helm of a sheet metal company and a father serving as a project manager and estimator in various trades, construction runs deep in Ryan's veins. His journey in construction started out in the field as a ductwork installer, gradually evolving into roles encompassing estimating and project management for federal projects. Specializing in plumbing, mechanical, and electrical aspects, Ryan has honed his expertise working with a general contractor. Ryan's downtime is spent with family, exploring computer technology, and gaming in various forms-board games, video games, and competitive gaming.

Samantha Cosper

Originally from San Antonio, TX, Samantha joined Sussex in 2022 following her tenure in the ship repair industry. During that time, she was part of a small group of professionals dedicated to the repair, maintenance, and expansive growth of the nation's oldest continually family-owned and operated shipyard in the US. There, she learned tried and true, practical, and cost-effective industrial construction practices that she brought with her to further hone and build on with the Sussex Team. Prior to her time at the shipyard, Samantha served as a Yeoman in the US Navy for 6 years. Her time in service included being stationed in Washington, DC, Naval Station Norfolk, and aboard the USS Enterprise with VFA 136. The various locales and platforms allowed her to garner a strong discipline and dedication to teamwork that she continues to use today. Samantha dedicates her time to volunteering for Equikids, an organization that provides equine therapy for children and veterans. Beyond her professional and volunteer commitments, she relishes moments with her family, enjoying good food and music, and staying active.

Shawn Wesley

Shawn grew up in Danville, Virginia before leaving to obtain a degree in Psychology from Michigan State University. It was there that Shawn discovered his love for construction and signed on with a mid-sized commercial construction management firm. Since then, Shawn has thrived in the industry and has years of experience delivering quality projects on schedule and on budget, while adding a personal touch to the process. Shawn has managed projects in various business sectors including manufacturing, hospitality, medical, dental, and government buildings. Shawn is LEED AP certified and completed a $10.2M 32,000 sf LEED Silver Class A office building in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shawn has experience in projects with extensive minority and disadvantaged business participation goals. He has worked directly with those companies to help them meet compliance needs and helped bridge their qualification gaps through outreach programs and acting as an advocate. Outside of work, Shawn loves to travel to new places with his wife and meet new people.
