_ There is ample evidence in the community to suggest that a cctv camera has little impact on the safety and security of people and property. Many people point out that despite the prevelance of them in our cities streets, businesses and clubs, crime still abounds. The same people will suggest that crime and criminal behaviour has been getting worse for a long time and no amount of additional surveillance has affected this trend... Of course many people will argue that a well positioned, properly functioning and managed cctv camera or cameras will act as a deterrent to opportunistic violators. They might ask what the crime figures might look like today were the world totally free of cctv cameras. If we accept the argument that society is becoming more unlawful each year, then one would have to suggest that that crime level would be expontenially increased without the presense of a cctv camera setup.
