Raku is a low temperature firing technique which comes from a 400-year-old tradition of producing ware for the Japanese tea ceremony. The many intense and brilliant colors in the piece of work are derived from the various metallic oxides used in raku glazes. The firing and reduction process imparts a unique glaze effect to each raku piece that cannot be duplicated. Because the clay body remains porous and somewhat fragile, raku ware is considered decorative only and should be handled with care. Neither water or food should be placed in raku vessels.
