It started as a vocational training school and was established in 1949 as a school of specialty in educating women and women leaders. It actively participated in the 4th World Women's Conference in 1995 and its following events in Beijing. After that, it enjoyed a fast development and has become the only independent state university specialized in women's higher education, providing professional intellectual and academic supports to Chinese government on women issues.
