Wendy Bean is the Director of Wendy Bean and Associates Pty Ltd, providing project management and professional development processes and materials for www.effectiveschools.com.au. Wendy is an Education Consultant working nationally and internationally. For over 40 years she has worked in education in schools as a teacher and as a consultant working with leadership teams and teachers with the aim of supporting positive changes in student outcomes. Wendy taught in the NSW government school system for 15 years and was a Literacy Consultant serving public schools in the Riverina region for two years. Between 1993 and 2002, on behalf of Wollongong University, she conducted training for Frameworks in Australia, Papua New Guinea and the United States and acted as a marketing consultant to the University of Wollongong for Frameworks Australia. She has also worked as the national consultant for several educational publishers in Australia. She has worked on many national government education projects including National Reading Day, designed and implemented a range of professional development courses for systems and schools and worked in hundreds of classrooms with teachers. She regularly participates in school review processes and provides follow up to maintain change where required. For eight years, on behalf of ALEA, she was project manager for National Literacy and Numeracy Week (a federal government initiative). Wendy was an assessor and writer for ESA's Teach Learn Share project. Since 2014 Wendy had the great pleasure of working as a consultant, writer and project manager on the Copyright Agency initiative, Reading Australia, a project designed to celebrate Australia's authors and illustrators. More recently she was project manager for Magabala Books, facilitating the publishing of 15 teaching units for books by some of Australia's best Indigenous authors and illustrators. These units have been added to the Reading Australia website. In 2001 she was awarded an Australian Research Grant to complete an Honors Master of Education through the University of Wollongong. The topic of her thesis was The Relationship Between Teacher Learning and School Culture. She lectured part-time in the post graduate program for the University of Wollongong for many years and more recently has worked with the Business Faculty at the University of Wollongong on the SIPS (Social Inclusion) project. She was the Project Manager for the Australian Government Literacy and Numeracy Summer School (2008) which was a consortium between the University of New England, Edith Cowan University and ALEA and was led by the University of Wollongong. She is an active member of the Australian Literacy Educators' Association and was ALEA Conference Liaison Director for four years as well as being a member of the executive committee of ALEA Sydney North Local Council. She was treasurer for the ALEA National Conference to be hosted in Sydney in July 2020, having fulfilled that same role in 2012. Unfortunately that volunteer role ceased with the conference cancellation due to COVID19. In 2014 she was honoured to receive the ALEA Medal in appreciation for her dedication and commitment to ALEA and the literacy community over many years. Wendy regularly presents at local, national and international conferences and has written several books and articles for teachers. She has presented at many ALEA and ILA conferences. Her published works include the Frameworks Spelling Course, several articles, as well as a number of books on teaching spelling and developing writing and spelling curriculum. Her most recent publication, Writing Instruction K-6: Understanding Process Purpose and Audience was co-authored with Dr Jan Turbill. It was published by RC Owens, USA.
