MATTHEW J - Key Persons

Carla O. Grune - CIO

Job Titles:
  • IT Director
Guerry Grune, obtained his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University (graduation with distinction) with a double major in Chemistry. Senior research involved the use of polysaccharides to induce pseudoplastic flow for tertiary oil recovery. After working as an R&D scientist for Fiber Industries Incorporated, a subsidiary of Celanese and ICI of Great Britain (later Hoechst-Celanese) in the heavy denier polyester filament and liquid crystal high modulus organic fiber group, he returned to graduate school at the University of Massachusetts. There he obtained the M.S.ChE. (1982) from the Departments of Polymer Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering working for Professor Robert W. Lenz in the field of thermotropic liquid polyesters including modeling for injection molding leading to commercialization of Vectra for the same purpose. Next he joined IBM in the Research Triangle Park, N.C. His major responsibilities there included development of the token ring local area network (LAN) cabling system, fiber optic cables and connectors, corrosive gas testing of metallurgical components including the initiation of the Corrosives Gas Testing Laboratory at RTP, standards and specifications for fiber data distributed interface (FDDI) systems, and ISO 9000 registration development. The IBM Cabling system was first announced as a commercial product in May, 1984 and is still recognized as the premier computer network system in use in the world today. Later, while still an IBM employee, he completed the doctorate in Chemical Engineering under the direction of Professors Vivian T. Stannett and Harry R. Allcock, that involved the use of modified allyl amino polyphosphazenes by radiation for semiconductor microlithographic resist applications. Leaving IBM as an IBM Fellow Engineer, Guerry went to work for ABB Corporation's newly built Transmission Technology Institute and simultaneously began teaching biochemical thermodynamics as an Adjunct Professor in the Duke University Biomedical Engineering program. As an ABB Fellow Engineer, he developed new coatings for magnet wire, process economic downsizing for drying distribution transformer production lines, developed novel adhesive systems for an optical distribution transformer requiring several new metal-to-glass connections, and worked with key investigators on novel agricultural oils as an alternate heat transfer medium. Among winning proposals submitted were; a corroded underground oil-filled high voltage power line; and the first U.S. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study of power and distribution transformers. The LCA work led to development with his wife and ePatentManager IT director, Carla O. Grune, of the LCAPIX software module (US Patent 6,490,569) combining, for the first time, Life Cycle Assessment with Activity Based Costing. This activity led to becoming the Principal Consultant for KM Limited, an environmental consulting company specializing in LCA and software development. Next, Guerry joined Mitsubishi Chemical America's Virginia Operations as Manager of Optical Photoreceptor Development (for electrophotography) and was later appointed the position as Director of Intellectual Property. In 2004, Guerry began full-time activities as the Principal of ePatentManager.com, and since then has provided full Intellectual Property development for NC State University (in their Tech Transfer Office), additional Fortune 500 companies including Solvay, Praxair (now Linde), and Exponent and was appointed IP director for Cable Components Group, Ennis-Flint (formerly Flint Trading), AG Essence, and others. In addition, US Patents 8,326,851 and 10,262,028 were granted to Dr. Grune that describe a portion of his teaching methodology on patent valuation. Currently Guerry is an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Pratt School Masters of Engineering Department at Duke University, where he lectures on Intellectual Asset Management and green, sustainable new product development. He has authored over 50 publications and technical disclosures, and is listed as an inventor or co-inventor for over 100 patents, patent publications, and patent applications either pending or granted.

Michelle G. Carter

Job Titles:
  • Director
Michelle G. Carter, ND, EMBA obtained her Bachelors of Chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University, with full concentrations in Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Biology. Undergraduate research on the study and set up of theoretical chemical calculations (using Spartan PC Pro, Chem 3-D, MOPAC) for the analysis of pipecolic acid moiety precursors provided an invitation to present at the November 2001 Kentucky Academy of Science/Tennessee Academy of Science Joint Meeting. The presentation, "Imine Cycloaddition Reaction. Computational and Synthetic Studies", received a 1 st Place honor. Miss Carter subsequently received invitations from Eastern Kentucky University to present at the "Showcase for Undergraduate Scholarly and Creative Activities", Eastern Kentucky University, April 2002 and "EKU Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Work", Eastern Kentucky University, March 2002. Michelle received her Certified Health Specialist (CHS) and Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP) in November 2016 and completed her Doctor of Naturopathy (ND) from Trinity School of Natural Health in January 2017. In February 2020, Michelle obtained her Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) from Quantic School of Business and Technology. Joining ePatentManager.com as Director in 2011, Michelle has become extensively involved in the Intellectual Property portfolios managed by the company. Extensive research writing experience lends to her versatility in drafting technical disclosures for many different areas including chemical, bio-chemical, mechanical and medical. Michelle enjoys painting and playing classical piano, and has received acknowledgements for her artistic expression in the visual and musical arts. Other favorite pastimes include snowboarding, reading and enjoying the outdoors with her family.
