Danick Briand

Danick Briand received his B.Eng. degree and M.A.Sc. degree in engineering physics from École Polytechnique in Montréal, Canada, in collaboration with the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG), France, in 1995 and 1997, respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in the field of micro-chemical sensing systems from the Institute of Microtechnology (IMT), University of Neuch tel, Switzerland in 2001. He is currently the team leader of the EnviroMEMS, Energy and Enviromental MEMS group at EPFL IMT Samlab. He has been awarded the Eurosensors Fellowship in 2010. He has been author or co-author on more than 150 papers published in scientific journals and conference proceedings. His research interests include polymeric MEMS, Power MEMS and energy harvesting, smart sensing systems, printing and foil technologies, green microtechnologies and microfabrication, ultra-low energy Microsystems, and the development of microsystems for environmental and energy applications.

Julian Gardner

Julian Gardner joined the School in 1987. His research interests are Microsensors & MEMS in general, and in particular Artificial Olfaction, Chemical Sensing, Smart Sensors, and Signal Processing Methods. He has previously spent 5 years in industry working first at AEA Technology Ltd and later at Molins Advanced Technology Unit on instrumentation. At Molins he developed a novel opto-electronic sensor that has been packaged in the UK and US for implementation on high speed packaging machinery. In 1989 he received the Esso Centenary Education Award sponsored by the Royal Society and Fellowship of Engineering to pursue his research interests. He has published over 450 technical papers and is an author of 8 books. He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in Germany in 1994 and Fellow of the Institute of Technology in 1997.
