Carol Ann Tomlinson

Carol Ann Tomlinson has been a faculty member at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, where she is currently Professor and Chair of Educational Leadership, Foundations and Policy. Also at U.Va., she is Co-Director of the University's Institutes on Academic Diversity. Special interests throughout her career have included curriculum and instruction for struggling learners and advanced learners, effective instruction in heterogeneous settings, and encouraging creative and critical thinking in the classroom. Carol is a reviewer for eight journals and is author of over 200 articles, book chapters, books, and other professional development materials. For ASCD, she has authored How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed Ability Classrooms, The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, Leadership for Differentiated Schools and Classrooms, the facilitator's guide for the video staff development sets called Differentiating Instruction, and At Work in the Differentiated Classroom, as well as a professional inquiry kit on differentiation. Most recently, she coauthored a book with Jay McTighe titled Integrating Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design: Connecting Content and Kids and with Kay Brimijoin and Lane Narvaez co-authored The Differentiated School: Making Revolutionary Change or Teaching and Learning. For Corwin Press, she is co-author of The Parallel Curriculum Model: A Design to Develop High Potential and Challenge High Ability Learners. Carol's books on differentiation have been translated into eleven languages. She works throughout the U.S. and abroad with teachers whose goal is to develop more responsive heterogeneous classrooms.

Cris Tovani

Cris Tovani taught elementary school for ten years before becoming a high school reading specialist and English teacher. A nationally known consultant, she chooses to continue teaching high school students full-time. She has also worked for many years as a staff developer for the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC), the consortium that has received national acclaim for its work in reading comprehension reform. Her book "I Read It, But I Don't Get It", and her new video series by Stenhouse, has helped thousands of teachers nationwide improve their instruction in reading comprehension.

Dr. Edward Hallowell

Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D. is a child and adult psychiatrist and the founder of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health in Sudbury, MA. He has also been on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School since 1983. A graduate of Harvard College, Dr. Hallowell has authored many books on various psychological topics, including problems with attention, focus, stress, and worry. His national best sellers "Driven to Distraction" (pantheon 1994) and "Answers to Distraction" (pantheon 1995) discuss attention deficit disorder in children and adults. He has also authored a comprehensive book on a wide range of emotional and learning problems in children entitled: "When You Worry About the Child You Love". His latest book, "The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness: Five Steps to help Kids Create and Sustain Lifelong Joy" (Ballantine, October 2002) is written for parent, teachers, and all those who are interested in children. In practical, concrete detail, Dr. Hallowell presents the basic ingredients for the kind of childhood that will most likely lead to a happy and satisfying adulthood. In addition, Dr. Hallowell made two videotapes for PBS, one about managing worry, the other about the power of connection, which were shown around the country in 1999. He has also appeared on such national television shows as "20/20", "The Today show", "Dateline", "Oprah", "Good Morning America", and "The View". Dr. Hallowell also writes a monthly column for Prevention Magazine.

Dr. Katie Wood Ray

Dr. Katie Wood Ray is a full time writer and researcher of the teaching of writing. Prior to that, she was an associate professor of Language Arts Education for eight years at Western Carolina University. With a particular focus on the study of writing craft, she leads teacher workshops and summer institutes across the nation related to the teaching of writing. Her professional background includes both elementary and middle school teaching experience and two years as a staff developer at The Reading and Writing Project, Teachers College, Columbia University. Katie is also the author or co-author of five books on the teaching of writing: Spelling in Use: Looking Closely at Spelling in the Whole Language Classrooms (1996, NCTE); Wondrous Words: Writers and Writing in the Elementary Classroom (1999, NCTE); The Writing Workshop: Working Through the Hard Parts (And They're All Hard Parts) (2001, NCTE); What We Know By Heart: How to Develop Curriculum for Your Writing Workshop (2002, Heinemann); and About the Authors: Writing Workshop with Our Youngest Writers (2004, Heinemann). She has also published numerous articles and book chapters, and is the former co-editor of the journal Primary Voices K-6, a publication of the National Council of Teachers of English. A frequent speaker at conferences and summer institutes around the country, Katie also has extensive experience teaching teachers in workshop and demonstration settings.

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth

Dr. Mary Ehrenworth is a national literacy consultant as well as a staff developer and researcher for Teachers College, Columbia University, where she is Deputy Director of the Reading and Writing Project. She has an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, and is the author of many articles and books, including: Testing Realities: Preparing Students for High Stakes Literacy Exams (Heinemann, 2007);The Power of Grammar: Unconventional Approaches to the Conventions of Language (Heinemann, 2004), co-authored with Vicki Vinton; and Looking to Write: Students Writing Through the Visual Arts (Heinemann,2003).

Dr. Mel Levine

Georgia Heard

Georgia Heard is an internationally known writer, keynote speaker and educational consultant. Thousands of educators and writers have listened to Ms. Heard speak of her passion for poetry and writing. She has keynoted hundreds of conferences and given workshops on writing throughout the United States as well as in Sweden, Canada, and Southeast Asia and she has brought her love of writing to classrooms throughout the United States. Ms Heard is the author of several books on teaching poetry and writing including her most recent title, The Revision Toolbox: Teaching Techniques That Work (Heinemann, 2002), the popular Awakening the Heart: Exploring Poetry in Elementary and Middle School (Heinemann, 1998), Writing Towards Home: Tales and Lessons to Find Your Way (Heinemann, 1995) and For the Good of the Earth and Sun: Teaching Poetry (Heinemann, 1987). J. Stuart Ablon

J. Stuart Ablon Ph.D., is Associate Director of the CPS Institute in the Department of Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Co-Director of the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving where he specializes in the treatment of explosive, inflexible, easily frustrated children and adolescents and their families. He is also Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ablon is co-author with Dr. Ross Greene of the forthcoming book, Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach. Drs. Greene and Ablon are also featured in the new DVD/video, Parenting the Explosive Child, that details the Collaborative Problem Solving approach. The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach, first described in the acclaimed book, The Explosive Child, has been featured on Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, The Early Show, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. J. Stuart Ablon, Ph.D., is the Director of Think:Kids in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is also Associate Clinical Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ablon co-founded the Center for Collaborative Problem Solving where he also served as Co-Director from its inception until 2008. Dr. Ablon is co-author of Treating Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach and author of numerous articles, chapters and scientific paperson the process and outcome of psychosocial interventions. Dr. Ablon's research has been funded by, amongst others, the National Institute of Health, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association, the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute, and the Endowment for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. Dr.Ablon received his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at Berkeley and completed his predoctoral and postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Joanne Hindley

Joanne Hindley is one of the founding members of the Manhattan New School in New York City. To her important work at this public elementary school, Joanne brings many years experience as a teacher of various elementary grades, as a staff developer and literacy coach in grades k-6, and as a co-leader of the Teachers College Writing Project. Joanne often serves as a consultant to school districts throughout the United States, conducting demonstration lessons, leading workshops, and delivering keynote addresses. She has presented many times at NCTE, IRA, NYSRA, and numerous colleges and universities across the country including Teachers College, Pennsylvania State University, Adelphi, and American International College. Joanne is the author of "In The Company of Children" (Stenhouse) an educational book about creating and maintaining successful reading and writing workshops. She has also been published in The Horn Book, School Talk, and The New Advocate. Joanne's classroom is the subject of a series of videotapes entitled "Inside Reading and Writing Workshops" also available through Stenhouse Publishers. As a member of the Elementary Steering Committee of NCTE, Joanne served as the editor of School Talk magazine for 2 years. Katherine Bomer

Katherine Bomer has taught primary and intermediate grades in New York City, Indiana, and most recently, Texas. Her classrooms have been featured in video productions by public television stations, Annenberg/CPB, and the New Standards Project. She worked as a professional developer for five years at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project with Lucy Calkins, and she continues to consult for that community as a keynote speaker, a teacher of advanced courses in reading and writing, and a professional developer to thousands of teachers in hundreds of classrooms in the Instructional Regions of New York City. She is the author of Writing a Life: Teaching Memoir to Sharpen Insight, Shape Meaning-and Triumph Over Tests! (Heinemann, 2005). With Randy Bomer, she wrote For a Better World: Reading and Writing for Social Action (Heinemann); with Lucy Calkins, she wrote A Writer's Bookshelf (Harper Junior Books); and she has written articles and book chapters appearing in National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and International Reading Association (IRA) publications. Katherine has served on the Executive Committee of NCTE and served on the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE) committee to compose the New Standards for Reading and Writing, Grades 4 and 5. Currently, she is an educational consultant in districts across the US. A frequently-requested keynote speaker, she also teaches at summer institutes around the country.

Nicki Newton

Nicki Newton is an education consultant who works with schools and districts around the country on elementary math curriculum (including best practices, guided math and math centers) as well as curriculum mapping. She has taught elementary school, middle school, and graduate school. She worked with Heidi Hayes Jacobs in facilitating both the Curriculum Mapping and the Interdisciplinary Curriculum Institutes at Teachers College, Columbia University for several years. Richard D. Lavoie

Richard D. Lavoie, M.A., M.Ed., has served as an administrator of residential programs for children with special needs since 1972.Rick was Director of the Riverview School in Massachusetts from 1990-2001. This experience provided Rick with a "living laboratory " in which he developed and refined his methods and philosophies related to the education of adolescents with special needs. Mr. Lavoie has lectured at numerous universities including Syracuse, Harvard, Gallaudet, Manhattenville College, University of Alabama, and Georgetown. His numerous television appearances include CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, ABC Evening News, Disney Channel Presents, and PBS's Misunderstood Minds. Rick has served as a consultant on learning disabilities to several agencies and organizations including Public Broadcasting Service, New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, Girl Scouts of America, Child Magazine, and WETA. He is a past member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Learning Disabilities Association. Rick's message has been delivered to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America.
