Before becoming a P.E., an engineer must successfully complete 4 to 6 years at an accredited school of engineering plus 2 to 4 years practical experience working under the supervision of another person who is already a Professional Engineer. A passing grade must also be achieved on a two day examination administered by the state issuing the license... There are many types of Professional Engineers including chemical, nuclear, aerodynamic, petroleum, mechanical, civil and others. A structural engineer concentrates on the mathematical analysis of buildings, bridges and other structures and has taken college courses specific to that discipline.
