In his 1991 book, 'Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture', author Douglas Coupland made a tongue-in-cheek reference to the phenomenon of 'semidisposable Swedish furniture'. Whilst this was clearly a reference to the rise of Ikea, the term struck a chord with us as it seemed so apt for the freelance design careers we were about to embark upon. To our clients we are semidisposable: a resource they can draw upon when needed, without the commitment of having to employ a full time design team.
