BRUNTSFIELD MEDICAL PRACTICE - Key Persons
Responsible for the overall management of the Practice with regards to finance, premises, staff and the strategic planning of service development and delivery. Brenda Mair also acts as a complaints and suggestions officer.
Our health visitors are registered nurses with HV qualifications and midwifery training. They are concerned with the health of pregnant women, and children under school age. They manage the baby clinics, under 5s immunisations, and child health assessments. They also run Preparation for Parenthood sessions with the Community Midwife. Dr Calvert joined the practice in 2008, initially as a Salaried GP. She became a partner in 2012. She studied at Edinburgh Medical School. During her training, she worked in Edinburgh, the Borders, Belfast and London. She was delighted to return to Edinburgh in 2007. She has also spent a sabbatical year in New York, although not practising medicine.
She has an interest in Cardiovascular Medicine, Woman and Children's health, including family planning. She provides a service for Contraceptive Coil and Implants.
Out of hours, she enjoys a busy family life with three small children, and can be found on the tennis court or at the piano.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Dr MacSorley studied history at the University of Glasgow. After completing this, he moved to Nottingham to study medicine, and then commenced junior doctor training in Edinburgh.
He joined the practice as a GP registrar, and remained with Bruntsfield after completing his training. His particular interests include child health, medicine of the elderly and musculoskeletal problems. In April 2021 he became a GP Partner at Bruntsfield.
He lives in Edinburgh, and enjoys cycling and following a variety of sports.
Dr Boyd has been a partner at the practice since 2008. During her time here she has become a trainer for GP trainees, and has developed an interest in teaching. She has a keen interest in family planning, and has been involved in offering coils and implanon contraceptive implants since Jan 2010.
Dr Penny joined the Practice in 1999 as a half time partner, having previously spent 6 years as a Principal in West Lothian. She brought with her experience of working and liaising with the Nursing Team and she has continued this work in our Practice.
She is particularly interested in paediatrics and women's health and has responsibility for overseeing the cervical screening programme in the practice.
Dr. Duffy completed his final year of GP training with Bruntsfield in Jul 2020 and has since joined the team permanently.
Dr Walls joined the practice as a partner in 2005. At that stage he was already well known to the practice having had attachments here as a medical student and his final year of GP training. After completing his GP training Dr Walls worked as a Higher Professional Training Fellow in the Edinburgh University Department of General Practice, where he was actively involved in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. He continues to be involved in medical education.
His main interest is exploring how processes can be developed and implemented to support health care workers deliver high quality health care. As part of his interest in this area he has undertaken a Masters in Business Administration at Strathclyde University.
Dr Carswell initially joined the practice in December 2010 as a long term locum covering two separate sessions of maternity leave. Since April 2012, following the retirement of Dr Galloway, Dr Carswell has become a permanent member of staff, taking over Dr Galloway's patient list.
After training in Dundee, she has experience working in Perth, Glasgow, Inverness, as well as a year in New Zealand. She has a special interest in Women's Health and Family Planning, as well as Accupuncture and Travel Medicine.

- Prescribing Support Technician
The Pharmacy team based at the Practice provide support to the GPs on our prescribing practices, performing safety checks and medication reviews. Rose also sees patients one day a week for cardiovascular and hypertension annual reviews, combining the service provided by the Practice Nurses in assessing patients, taking bloods and offering support and advice, as well as the GPs by being able to undertake a review of the medication being taken.

Assists the Business Manager with the day to day running of the Practice and has responsibility for the management of personnel, health and safety and maintenance.

Responsible for all aspects of Information Technology and Information Systems within the Practice. Maintain the practice clinical database recall systems as well as coding and entering data. Ensuring an excellent standard of patients records and audit reporting.

The District Nurses, along with their team of staff nurses, work closely with the doctors to provide treatment and advice to the housebound and to patients recently discharged from hospital. They are currently based out of Astley Ainslie Hospital and their direct line telephone number (with answer machine) is 0131 537 9031.
Responsible for the administration of the registration process for all new patients and the de-registration of patients moving. Added responsibilities: immunisation records for the 0-5 year old, change of addresses and ad-hoc reports.
The Patient Services Manager is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the reception team and the efficient operation of the reception and records office.
