Adrian Barnes

Adrian is the Director responsible for leading and expanding our Midlands construction operations from our office in Rugby, operating throughout the Midlands and the M1 corridor regions. Adrian has over 30 years' industry experience with McLaren Construction, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty. He leads his team by example, encouraging innovative thinking and value creation for our clients, and has a passion for delivering the highest standards of customer service and project delivery in a collaborative environment.

Job Titles:

Working with Stepnell has been an excellent example of collaborative approach to design and construction where the designers and the contractor have worked in partnership to take a pro-active approach to problem solving and prevention. Stepnell has worked hard to maintain the original design intent and client's vision for a social care building that provides outstanding facilities and care for an extremely vulnerable client group.

Edward Wakeford

Job Titles:
  • Property Director
Edward manages the Stepnell Property Services Team and is responsible for leading their performance in the management of Commercial and Residential Property Portfolios and the Tenants. This consists of properties that are directly owned by the Stepnell Group or through our role as managing agents for external clients. Our in-house team comprises Commercial and Residential Surveyors, Building Surveyors and a Maintenance Team. The team has grown in recent years to be able to bring forward new-build development opportunities as well as to deliver extensive refurbishment of existing properties through our in-house resources. Edward believes in building strong relationships with Tenants, to understand their aspirations and to ensure that the buildings continue to meet their changing requirements.

Jayne Suthard

Training manager, Jayne Suthard, added: "Training and development is fundamental in ensuring we employ the right people with the right skills to do the right jobs. Secondary to this is continuous learning and development, which ensures we keep abreast of modern working practices and operational requirements. We embrace young talent like these three trainees and recognise nurturing competent, motivated and well-trained people like them is essential to our continued success."

John Green - Chief Commercial Officer

John is a driven construction professional with a proven track record in leading commercial teams and supporting the effective management of project and strategic issues. John oversees the commercial function and works closely with our regional teams to encourage continual improvement and efficiency. John is committed to creating and developing teams through open communication and knowledge sharing between all disciplines and has a passion for supporting Stepnell employees to realise their potential. John is a practised advocate of listening to varying points of view to collectively overcome challenges and realise opportunities, and to do so with a smile!

Lewis Archibald

Job Titles:
  • Preconstruction and Framework Director
Lewis began his career in the construction industry in the early 1990's as a Management Trainee following his HND, where he settled into Estimating and worked his way up from Trainee to Estimating Director. Throughout his career Lewis has worked extensively within numerous national and regional frameworks and is therefore ideally placed to lead our framework offering on behalf of Stepnell.

Lorraine Hillsdon

Lorraine joined Stepnell in 2018 as Head of People & Culture following a 20 year career in Human Resources and Training. Lorraine initially began her career in Training and Development, working in a number of roles, when she then moved into Human Resources and completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management. Lorraine along with Rob Speirs were instrumental in creating and implementing Teamship at Stepnell. Lorraine is committed to creating, developing and supporting high performing teams through Teamship. She also promotes an ‘open door' policy and encourages colleagues to talk to her if they need help resolving issues or if they want to share best practice.

Peter Commins

Peter is a highly regarded construction industry Director with a lifetime of leading complex construction projects. Peter provides great support and challenge to the Stepnell Board through his expertise and experience.

Peter Wakeford

Peter is the Senior Director, having joined the Board in 1969, as a third generation member of the founding family of the Company. Peter continues to oversee the property development and investment activities of the business, with which he has been principally involved throughout his term.

Robert Speirs

Robert is a board director and the director responsible for leading Stepnell's Southern operations, managing teams at Wantage, Bristol, Poole and Southampton. Building upon Stepnell's reputation for delivering high calibre buildings and exceptional client service, Robert has steered the business through an exciting period of growth in the south, securing a series of significant and high profile developments and overseeing their successful completion. Robert was instrumental in the introduction of ‘teamship' into the business through his passion for Rugby and the management techniques of Sir Clive Woodward.

Tom Sewell

Tom is responsible for leading and expanding our East Midlands construction operations from our office in Nottingham. Tom is also our Director of Health & Safety, he leads our SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality) team which brings together Health & Safety, Sustainability and Environment and our Systems teams. With over 25 years' experience in the East Midlands construction industry, Tom brings a wealth of technical and local knowledge to the region. He has a passion for developing strong relationships and helping clients maximise the whole life value of their investment.

Tom Wakeford - Managing Director

Tom has led the growth and development of the construction business to be one of the leading regional contractors. Tom manages all the construction regions to challenge, enhance and improve every element of how we operate. Tom uses his excellent communication skills to develop exceptional teams across the business working for clients who seek contractors as their partners. He is passionate about the continued development of the service we provide for our clients, particularly through our first class Stepnell employees.

Will Mart

Job Titles:
  • Manager at Bluebell
McKenzie Hague started his career at Stepnell in 2021 and is a level 2 ground worker apprentice on the Bluebell project. His pathway into construction was originally in joinery before retraining as a ground worker. He is currently combining his studies at Stephenson College with paid work, which includes a mentor on site. His longer term goal is to progress to train future trainee ground workers like himself. Studying for a BSc in Construction Site Management at Sheffield Hallam University, new recruit Will Mart is a trainee site manager at Bluebell. He joined us in January 2024. His previous role included projects at East Midlands Designer Outlet, Old Rectory, Clifton and Glenair in Mansfield. Based in our Nottingham office and travelling regularly to site, Ben Sandhu is studying for a BSc Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at Nottingham Trent University. Ben previously studied sports science before deciding to change direction. His existing skills were easily transferable to make the successful move into construction. Former Stepnell apprentice and project manager on the Bluebell project, Scott Fullaway, said: "Will, Ben and McKenzie have all settled into this project really well. I am impressed with their hard working ethos and commitment to do a good job. They are all showing real promise and the potential for a long and successful career with us."
