While hardware systems and computer platforms have made innovative strides in recent years, progress in software development under COBOL has been stagnating. One reason for this is probably the fact that relatively old applications have received only functional updates during software maintenance. If one looks closer into a number of recent COBOL developments, it becomes apparent, that many are still based on the design principles of COBOL 74... The development/transition from COBOL 74 to COBOL 85 (with enlargements through COBOL 89) has not been sufficiently respected. Not only from the many training providers, but also within the COBOL-using enterprises, new concepts and possibilities were only selectively used and acknowledged.
