DYAR ARCHITECTURE - Key Persons

Erik Dyar

Job Titles:
  • Principal
Erik Dyar grew up in the Pacific Northwest and received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon with significant studies in the United Kingdom and Mexico. He is a registered architect in the State of California. During his career, he has continued his study and love of architecture traveling throughout North and Central America, Europe, North Africa, and Asia. This world perspective informs and inspires his work. Upon graduation, Erik was invited by his mentor, acclaimed architect John Thodos, FAIA, to join his practice in Carmel, California. Erik spent the next 17 years working with John as his primary associate on a wide array of projects, ranging from many award-winning custom residences, residential renovations, and hotels to retail stores, offices, mixed-use projects, and historic preservation. In 2006, Erik established DYAR Architecture and has since pursued projects throughout the West Coast, focusing in the Monterey County area. During his many years in Carmel, Erik has developed a distinct understanding and appreciation of this special place; an understanding that allows him to create new architecture uniquely appropriate to the area and has led to his advocacy for historic preservation. He has served on and chaired the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea's Historic Resources Board since 2005. Erik is a current board member and Past President of AIA Monterey Bay. His work on the board focuses on outreach communicating the importance of design excellence to the community. Outside of Architecture, Erik's avocation is music. He is an accomplished amateur, classical pianist and enjoys performing solo recitals and chamber music. Moreover, he is an avid enthusiast of the local music scene and has also served on the Carmel Music Society board for several years helping bring the world's greatest classical artists to Carmel-by-the-Sea.
