The main goal of this research project is to develop better methods for recognizing when newborns are suffering pain... It has been reported in medical journals that health care professionals have difficulty determining when a newborn is experiencing pain. Unlike adults or children, newborns cannot tell others what they are feeling. Pain often indicates a medical problem. Since the experience of prolonged pain may lead to psychological and behavioral deficits, it is critical we know when a newborn is experiencing pain.
