He then trained in internal medicine at Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by research training in hematology, oncology and immunology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Dartmouth Medical School and L'Institut de Cancerologie et d'Immunogenetique in France... Smith then spent 20 years on the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School and embarked on a career focused on cancer immunology. He made several seminal discoveries which transformed immunology from a science focused on cells to one focused on molecules... His research team identified, purified and characterized the first interleukin molecule and it's receptor, then demonstrated how this immunological hormone-receptor system regulates the tempo, magnitude and duration of the immune response.
