WRNSSTUDIO - Key Persons

Adam Woltag

Job Titles:
  • Partner
At the core of Adam's practice is an inquiry into the line (or potential lack thereof) between civic and civil and / or public and private environments. How can a water treatment plant provide both a community service and a space for public interaction and learning? How can it be beautiful and holistically sustainable? Adam has dedicated his career to design that contributes to the civic discourse; he finds beauty and value in the everyday, the moments that really create a city. Basically, he listens to a lot of This American Life. Adam approaches each design challenge by searching for a balance between the poetic and the pragmatic - beauty meets budget, program and site. The places he crafts respond to the natural environment and function sustainably, with a lasting elegance that does more with less. These qualities of his work have been recognized with numerous publications and awards, including the prestigious AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) Award. Adam is honored to be involved in the development of our Honolulu office; he'd like to give back to the community that was so critical to his development. He hopes to design civic spaces that are unmistakably of Hawaii, helping to ensure the State's sustainable future. Adam earned his Master of Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) and his Bachelor of Architecture from Arizona State University.

Andrea Nickisch

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Senior Architect
Andrea's design approach emulates the modernist principle that form follows function. Early on she learned that no matter how beautiful a building is, if it does not function, it has failed to fulfill the basic needs of its users. At the age of 12, her parents began the hunt for a new home, prompting Andrea to draw plans and elevations based on their search and her family's requirements. Without hesitation, architecture became her career path, ultimately earning a Bachelor of Architecture with a minor in Regional and Community Planning from Kansas State University. Returning to her native Kansas City, Missouri after graduation, she worked primarily on sports projects. Moving to San Francisco, she was drawn to WRNS' beautiful design work and the opportunity to explore new project typologies. A nature lover, Andrea pairs her love of running and the outdoors by corresponding her vacations to half marathons at national and state parks.

Prior to WRNS, Bella spent nearly three years at a local, award-winning architectural interior and graphic design studio, and held internships at various design offices including at Leo A. Daly. Bella graduated with honors from Chaminade University of Honolulu with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Environmental + Interior Design. Bella Mang

Job Titles:
  • Designer
Bella joins the firm with a background in interior architecture and an interest in housing and urbanism. Prior to joining WRNS, she gained experience in designing residential, mixed-use, industrial, and exhibition projects while at firms across the globe. Working across typologies, he has contributed to the The Juilliard School and Alice Tully Hall in New York, mixed-use developments in China, as well as an Arts and Humanities Building at CSU Monterey Bay with WRNS. Ben's design approach is characterized by intellectual mobility. Moving between design charrettes and technical coordination, and incorporating the use of digital software paired with hand sketches, he brings a forethought to every problem to see the design concept realized in the built work. Ben spends his free time on smaller-scale projects, creating award-winning lighting and furniture design, something that began while pursing his Bachelor of Architecture at Cal Poly and Master of Architecture at UCLA. This work supports his larger-scale efforts at WRNS, providing an opportunity to explore materials and tectonics with manual and digital tools. Ben's career is diverse, spanning scales and market sectors and geographic regions, and he enjoys cultivating this breadth of experience. No matter the context, the search for innovation is his true North - the unifying theme that connects all of his work. He thrives on creating spaces that are authentic experiences, reflective of the communities they serve. They help him to reimagine space and the ways people occupy it.

Branden Harrell

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Senior Designer
A strong curiosity for discovering the factors influencing the design of buildings drew Branden to architecture. With a deep and diverse portfolio of multifamily housing-from luxury to affordable, and including dormitories, and senior housing throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, he enjoys being able to provide thoughtful design solutions that influence, build and strengthen communities. Branden employs a holistic approach to residential design, one that takes cues from the fabric of surrounding buildings, the environment and the current and historical cultural significance to site, neighborhood and its context. Branden earned his B.A. in Architecture from UC Berkeley, and his M.Arch. from the Architectural Association in London, focusing on sustainable environmental design as it pertains to housing. He joins WRNS after having worked for a number of the bay area's leading architects in multi-family residential, and just completing the 660 Indiana Street residential project in the Dogpatch neighborhood of SF.

Brian Milman

Job Titles:
  • Partner
Brian's practice is a mesh of critical design, technical innovation, and skilled management. Like his talent, Brian's portfolio is diverse, ranging from small community centers in San Francisco to large-scale creative workplaces for clients like Adobe and Intuit. His ability to connect the macro and micro - on any given day he might be deeply engaged in a new campus master plan or immersed in detailing a building - brings tremendous value to our studio culture. Brian has always been fascinated with how things get built, investigating the more tactile modes of design throughout his career, including metalwork and furniture fabrication. A designer and builder, he can communicate with both, a skill that has proven critical on many of WRNS Studio's most complex projects. Brian began exploring the role of technology in design early on, beginning with time-lapse movies and interactive multimedia presentations that explored architecture's role in a transient culture. As the WRNS Studio's Information Technology Partner in Charge, he implements new tools to improve our practice, advocating early on for BIM to expand design capabilities and Newforma to increase project management efficiency. Brian earned his Master of Architecture from University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida.

Brian Mulder

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Senior Architect
Brian Mulder understands the critical role buildings play in shaping private organizations, the public realm, and planetary health. Throughout, Brian is interested in projects that establish bold urban gestures from the "big picture" idea to the everyday user's experience. A firm believer in the primary tenets of good design, he champions sustainability as a driver for innovative projects that are honest, timeless, and beautiful. Brian is currently designing the expansion of Adobe's Campus in Lehi, Utah. Before joining WRNS Studio, Brian gained experience working at firms in the Boston area and in San Francisco. Brian Ng

Job Titles:
  • Architect
Brian, born in Hong Kong and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, received his Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. A generalist at heart, he approaches design with a strong sense of optimism-guided by the belief that design is not merely stylistic but rather comprises a comprehensive understanding of time, place, and values, along with the latent ability to spur positive change. Studying and working abroad in Copenhagen provided him invaluable experience uniting his values with his work, which champions sensible and pertinent, yet distinct, design. This has been exemplified in the variety of typologies that he has touched, from retail projects such as International Market Place in Waikiki and Mall of San Juan, to civic and transportation projects such as Monterey Conference Center and SEATAC International Arrivals Facility. Brian received a Best of Show Award for his Undergraduate Thesis: "Hacking Architecture" and has been published in various online architectural blogs such as Archinect, Archdaily, and DesignBoom.

Bruce Hancock

Job Titles:
  • Designer
Architecture's role in reinterpreting how we relate to the city characterizes Bruce's approach to design. He is influenced by the work of Peter Eisenman and Aldo Rossi, where an appreciation for the timelessness of architectural form and the urban context form a specific relationship that causes us to reexamine how we live. Bruce believes exceptional architecture is inherently critical of the way we think, moving us to communicate how we see and interact with the world. A native of California, Bruce returned to the West Coast after living for fifteen years in New York and Connecticut. In New York he worked on the City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center and on the renovation restoration of Thurgood Marshall US Courthouse. Prior to joining WRNS, he worked on a masterplan for the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and a competition for Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Performing Arts Center. Bruce attended Princeton University for his BA in architecture and earned his Master of Architecture from Yale.

Bryan Shiles

Job Titles:
  • Founding Partner
For Bryan, architecture begins at the intersection of program and place. Program includes not only space requirements, functional relationships, financial parameters, and business realities, but also the project's cultural underpinnings and place-making potential. Place is at once a built reality, a cultural undertaking, a layered history, and a crucible for the future. Bryan's work is grounded in the phenomenological understanding of place advanced by such authors as Christian Norberg-Schulz and Aldo Rossi, an understanding that looks beyond obvious motifs to the cultural and spatial patterns and events that stoke our memories. Of particular importance is the experience of distance, be it the compression of a San Francisco street or the expanse of the Utah desert. In the studio teaching that he has maintained in parallel with his design practice for over 25 years, Bryan has guided students in the skills of perception and analysis that enable them to deftly situate a project in its unique context. Bryan has transferred the learning experience from the university setting into practice and back again, linking education and practice in the advancement of architectural excellence. WRNS Studio is called "studio" for a reason: through open, in-house critiques and in his role as roving tutor, Bryan leads an ongoing critical discussion about how the firm's buildings can most powerfully evoke place, while avoiding the trivializing effects of mimicry. The result of Bryan's critical practice is two-fold: a vigorous culture of education, linking the academy and practice; and a distinguished portfolio of buildings spanning a broad range of programmatic type, fundamentally rooted in mission, place, time, culture and human aspiration. Bryan's teaching engagements include design studios at Ohio State, California College of the Arts, UC Berkeley, and Stanford University. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee, and achieved his Master of Architecture from Harvard University. Bryan and his family have lived in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Celso Rojas

Job Titles:
  • Architect
  • Associate

In each new city he's inhabited, Celso has explored and honed his design aesthetic and philosophy, which is rooted in empathy and context. His strong interest in placemaking and sustainability has made him a seamless fit with the culture and practice at WRNS Studio, where his eye serves not only design, but the occasional photo shoot. Celso's practice is strongly influenced by his photography - the lens through which he views design is about capturing the moments that inspire and make a place. He joins WRNS after studying at the Barcelona Architecture Center and working for a firm in the city, where he explored restoring one of Barcelona's Eixample blocks to Cerda's original 1859 design with a focus on pedestrian accessibility, light, air, and the creation of a network of greenspaces. Douglas Hoffelt

Job Titles:
  • Associate
  • Senior Architect
Doug most enjoys his work when he's knee deep in Design Development or Construction Documents, solving technical problems and working with his project team to execute a great design. His approach is a blend of humanism and technical acumen; when working in a Revit model, for instance, he thinks of the building as an experience rather than an object, from the overall design to the smallest detail.
