SKIPPER'S GREEK CAFE

As he is well known today as "The Skipper", Yianni Psarovarkas was born January 28, 1939 in Athens, Greece the youngest of four children and the only son. John's father, Peter Psarovarkas, came to the United States in 1885 and settled in Savannah, GA. Peter worked in Savananah first as a dishwasher and then moved up to a cook working beside some very well known chefs in small and large restaurants. Subsequently, after twenty years Peter returned to Athens where he met and married John's mother and developed a large transportation business in Athens. His trucks were in heavy demand by the government at the onset of World War II. The government seized Peter's business to use the trucks in support of the war effort. Fortunately he was able to secure a very reputable job as the cook for the Ambassador in the American Embassy. For years Peter spoke highly of the great opportunities in the United States.
