Chelsea Mason-Placek, Workforce Development Director, Washington State Labor Council. Prior she served many roles in the office of United States Congressman Adam Smith. D in Educational Leadership. Currently Enrolled at Oregon State University completing an Ed.D in Adult Higher Education. Dissertation title: "The Impact of Mentorship Initiatives on Black Male Community College Students Persistence and Completion."
Christopher's professional background is in health information technology and began his career in 1989 working for several health networks including Blue Cross, Healthnet and Blue Shield. Christopher started his career in higher education in 2000 as a curriculum developer and program director at United Education Institute, where he served an underrepresented, low socio-economic student population for 10 years. For nine years, he continued his journey in higher education as a program chair and associate dean of allied health for Charter College. In 2015, Christopher was hired by President Kevin McCarthy as the dean of allied health at Renton Technical College; which recently changed to dean of health and human services. He loves working with faculty and staff, and helping students to meet and exceed their personal and professional goals.
Christopher's hobbies include cooking, baking, reading and listening to music. Christopher has been married for 11 years and has two children.

Dr. Bernal Baca is currently the Executive Director of Mi Centro in Tacoma a multi-million-dollar non-profit providing social, cultural, and educational services to the greater Pierce County Latino Community. He is a 30-year retired Professor Emeritus at Yakima Valley College and former Past President of the American Federation of Teachers Yakima faculty. He also served as the Government Relations Specialist and Chief Lobbyist of the American Federation of Teachers Washington for 10 years. He was appointed on the Washington State Board of Education by Gov. Gregoire and is Past President of Association of Multi-Cultural Counseling and Development, an affiliate of ACA. He is the current vice chair of the Washington State Hispanic Affairs Commission. He also serves as the chair of the Racial Equity Team and a co-founder and board member of the Equity in Education, a trustee of the Tacoma Art Museum and a board member of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce. He is well known and respected in the state, county and city for his work on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Dr. Baca was born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado to a pioneer family who founded the city he was born in. This was part of Mexico prior to 1846. His father was the first Latino Mayor pro- tem for the city of Trinidad. Dr. Baca attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Washington State University in Pullman and Seattle University in Seattle.
He has two daughters and 6 grandchildren and is an avid fan and season ticket holder since 1970 of the Denver Broncos.

Fred, a long-time Tacoma resident, is an attorney with law offices in Tacoma and Seattle. He is a U.S. Air Force retiree who served in Vietnam, Korea and other Asian nations.
Fred is a former two-term member of the Tacoma Community College board of trustees and a past national board member of the American Association of Community College Trustees, based in Washington, D.C. He also served in leadership roles and as a member of several ethnic and Asian-Pacific Islander organizations, including the Ethnic Minority Commission, Asian-Pacific Islander Coalition, and the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in Tacoma.
He graduated from Waipahu High School in Hawaii. Fred earned his bachelor's degree in political science and international affairs from Florida State University. He earned his master's degree in Korean/Asian regional studies from the University of Washington and his law degree at the University of Puget Sound.

Jay joined Pacifica Law Group in 2011, after two years as Deputy Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of Commerce under Secretary Gary Locke. During the preceding 28 years, Jay's private law practice in Seattle focused on affordable housing, education, nonprofit and government finance, as well as public/private partnerships and general municipal law. He served as a White House Fellow in the office of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He also was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office and became Assistant Chief Criminal Deputy in charge of the juvenile division. Jay was also a member of the Student Achievement Council until spring 2013.
Jay was a member of the Central Washington University Board of Trustees from 1999 through 2005 and has been a visiting lecturer in the University of Washington School of Law. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College and Juris Doctorate at Harvard Law School.

Kady Titus is Koyukon Athabascan and a citizen of the Native Village of Ruby, Alaska. She started her career working in social and behavioral health services with a Tribal health organization in Alaska. After moving to Eastern Washington in 2013, Kady began working with workforce development organizations providing services and on-the-job training opportunities in rural communities. Most recently, she worked with Tribes on a national level to identify, develop, and implement solar power projects that meet community needs, including education, hands-on training, and energy cost reductions for tribal members. She is an alumnus of the Native Action Network's Legacy of Leadership Cohort. Kady is also an artist, and her creativity and love for color can be seen in her indigenous beadwork.

Martin joins the State Board continuing his service to education and community. Martin works as the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at Heritage University in Toppenish, Wash. Prior to Heritage, he worked in different roles for Columbia Basin College in Pasco, including as a professor of history and intercultural studies, vice president for diversity and outreach and chief executive officer of the CBC Foundation.
Martin is also active in the Tri-Cities business community, serving as the interim executive director of the Tri-Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and as a board member for the Tri-Cities Economic Development Council (TRIDEC) and Gesa Credit Union.
Martin's past volunteer affiliations include Visit Tri-Cities, Communities in Schools of Benton-Franklin, United Way, American Red Cross, Mid-Columbia Symphony, LEAP (Latino/a Educational Achievement Project), CREHST Museum, The Children's Reading Foundation, Columbia Basin Badger Club and the Downtown Pasco Development Authority.

Melissa is a Pacific Northwest native from the Portland/Vancouver area, the traditional territories of the Multnomah, Cowlitz, and Chinook peoples. She is Black-White biracial. Her mother's family of educators and engineers hails from New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Her father's family is rooted in Texas where they were enslaved and then forged lives as sharecroppers and farmers after emancipation.
Melissa earned an A.A. from Clark College, a B.A. in History from the University of Washington, and an M.A. in Public History from Washington State University with a concentration in African American and social history. She is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at Portland State University. Melissa's professional journey in higher education began in 2005; she has held several student services positions. Before joining the State Board, she served as Director of Student Equity and Inclusion at Clark College.
Outside of work, Melissa is often invited to provide diversity, equity, and inclusion training for institutions, organizations, churches, and businesses. Additionally, her passion for history inspires her to participate in local history projects and to speak to various audiences about Vancouver, Washington's Black history.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, engaging in progressive political action, road trips, camping, podcasts, and watching rugby.

Sophia is a 1.5 generation Filipina American who resides on the traditional lands of the Puyallup people. She works alongside communities in the areas of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, as they do the brave work of imagining the world they want to build and animating others to join them in creating a more just society where all may thrive.
Sophia earned her B.A. in English, Master in Teaching, and Master of Communication in Digital Media from the University of Washington, and is currently pursuing her Ed. D. in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership with a focus on Diversity and Equity in Education and a Certificate of Specialization in Community College Leadership through the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Sophia is a qualified administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory®-a cross-cultural assessment of intercultural competence.
Sophia is no stranger to public service, as much of her life's work has involved communication, advocacy and engagement in the areas of student success and educational access, immigration, economic justice, healthcare, poverty and homelessness. Before joining the State Board, Sophia led equity efforts in the K-12 sector and for a regional transit agency's office of Civil Rights, Equity and Inclusion. She is thrilled to be co-creating alongside the EDI team at the State Board and across the system.
