Alberto Cárdenas - VP

Alberto Cárdenas is an architect and urban designer with over forty years of professional experience including architecture, planning and teaching in the United States and Colombia. Alberto has extensive experience with the design of a wide range of building types for both public and private sector clients. He has managed studies and design projects for mass transit, parking facilities, market rate and affordable housing, as well as cultural and institutional facilities. Alberto has led design teams on large-scale public sector projects that require close collaboration with multi-member corporate clients as well as coordination among many specialized sub-consultants. He is well versed in helping owner-designer teams sort through complex technical, design and cost options by setting goals and priorities to achieve timely and cost-effective solutions. His practice in urban design and architecture has focused on creating buildings that enhance the public realm, and many of his projects have received awards for design excellence. His portfolio also covers adaptive reuse of educational, industrial and residential buildings, historic rehabilitation and the occupied rehabilitation of large housing developments. Prior to joining DHK, Mr. Cárdenas practiced architecture in Bogotá, Colombia, where his experience included private and multi-family housing, commercial, industrial, transportation and medical facilities. He also served in the public sector as Assistant Director of the Bogotá City Planning Department. Experience: 56 years

Brett Stia is a Senior Project Architect with 33 years of experience in design, management and execution of complex, multi-disciplinary projects. Since joining DHK he has worked on transportation, housing and facilities projects. Prior to joining DHK Brett was an Associate at Leslie Feder Architect and a Principal with Feder & Stia Architects where he specialized in affordable multi-family housing in New York. He has extensive public and private project experience with residential, mixed use, commercial, and transportation projects of various sizes. He has a wide-ranging background working with numerous local, state, and federal agencies including: NYS-MTA, NYC-HPD, NYC-DCAS, NYC-DDC, NYCHA, NYC-EDC, NYC-DOT, NYC-PDC, NYC-LPC, NYS-DHCR, NYS-SHPO and USDOI-NPS. Brett has been involved in all aspects of project delivery from initial conceptualization through all design phases, preparation of construction documents, agency approvals and construction administration. Brett is a registered architect in New York State and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Experience: 35 years

Fernando J. Domenech - President

Fernando Domenech has provided professional and strategic leadership to DHK as the firm's President since its inception. Fernando has been a leading practitioner in the field of affordable housing for over thirty years. His projects have been broadly recognized with awards for their numerous contributions to the revitalization of inner city neighborhoods though creative planning, imaginative urban design and excellence in architecture. Building on his early grass-roots experience working for a Latino CDC in Boston, Fernando went on to develop extensive experience in community participation for public and private housing developments throughout the Northeast and Puerto Rico. He has been responsible for a majority of the hous¬ing completed by the firm, with a focus on community-based urban housing. He has overseen several HOPE VI projects including the $29 million revitalization of Orchard Gardens in Boston and the $25 million revitalization of Manuel A. Perez development in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mr. Domenech maintains an active interest and involvement in the Boston community, where he has served on numerous boards and commissions. John Gonzalez is a seasoned designer and project manager who manages some of DHK's most challenging, complex assignments for public clients. His portfolio covers design for new construction and rehabilitation of rail and highway transportation projects located in dense urban areas that require utility relocation and complex construction phasing for traffic and station operation. He has developed extensive expertise with general transit station planning and design including vertical transportation systems, egress requirements, state and national building codes. John has also developed specialized expertise in subsurface projects that include large structures in deep underground open cuts, secant pile/slurry wall/ braced sheet pile structures, underwater tunnels and innovative waterproofing solutions.

DHK's Design Director, Tosh Taketomo, has over 40 years of experience in the planning and design of award winning local and international projects. Over his career he has been a Principal, Vice President and senior design leader at prominent architectural firms, winning multiple design competitions and developing major commercial, academic, cultural, residential and mixed-use projects on important urban sites. His work has been widely recognized for design excellence. Tosh leads and oversees DHK projects with firm Principals, and applies his unique experience on a wide range of building types, to achieve a high standard of integrated design at every scale, from concept to execution. He was a top graduate at Harvard, and has taught there and at other area professional schools, and served on design awards juries for the AIA and BSA. Experience: 47 years

Wayne C. Gething

Wayne Gething provides in-depth technical expertise to DHK's projects, with a focus on public sector facilities. During his 18 years of professional practice, Wayne has developed a comprehensive understanding of building systems, construction documents, specifications and construction administration. At DHK he has worked principally on public and industrial facilities and transportation projects including renovations, adaptive reuse and new construction of diverse building types. In this capacity Wayne works closely with public sector clients, town officials, permitting officials and boards to help them achieve the results they seek. He has an in-depth understanding of the public bidding process in Massachusetts under Chapter 149 regulations and he has extensive experience coordinating the bid phase of such projects. Wayne is particularly well versed in construction administration services and plays a leading role in studies that require field inspections, building evaluations, and existing condition reports. He specializes in building envelope and weatherization technology. Experience: 27 years Education: Boston Architectural Center, B.Arch.
