Alexandra Savinkina is a first year PhD student in the Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases. Prior to coming to Yale, Alexandra was a data analyst at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and then worked in simulation modeling at Boston Medical Center's infectious disease department.

Alycia Santilli

Alycia Santilli, MSW, is the Director the Community Alliance for Research and Engagement (CARE) at Southern Connecticut State University. Alycia received her Master in Social Work with a concentration in Community Organizing from the University of Connecticut. She worked as a community organizer for several years, organizing people to influence state policy. Recognizing the link between policy change and research, she became interested in public health research as a means for advancing public policy. Ms. Santilli began coordinating research projects at the Yale School of Public Health in 2005. She brings research skills in survey design, recruitment of hard-to-reach study participants, data collection protocol, and intervention development. She also brings skills in community-based intervention development (projects and policy-level). Ms. Santilli joined CARE shortly after its inception at Yale in 2007 and has been integral in providing administrative oversight and strategic direction for the new organization. A dedicated resident of New Haven, CARE provides a unique venue for Alycia to combine her community organizing background with her research skills to improve the health of New Haven.

Andrew K. Bhak

Ann Prestipino

Ann Prestipino, '80 M.P.H. is a Senior Vice President for Strategy and Clinical Operations at Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts General Physician Organization as well as a Teaching Associate at Harvard Medical School. Ann is the chair of the board of directors at Boston Medflight, a non-profit that provides critical air and ground transportation as well as a former Trustee at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Ann has worked at Mass General for over 30 years holding several positions of increasing responsibility. She currently oversees many clinical/academic departments and centers, strategic planning and plays a leadership role assisting in the development of the Partners Healthcare System. Ann earned her BA in 1978 from Brown University before going on to receive her MPH from the Yale School of Public Health.

Ariel Chao

Ariel is a PhD candidate at YSPH in the Biostatistics Department. She is working on methods that address mismeasured clusters in cluster-randomized trials when evaluating causal effects in the presence of spillover, and applying these methods to HIV prevention trials.

Atalay Demiray

Atalay Demiray, MD, MSc, is a first-year PhD student in Health Policy and Management at Yale University. As a first-generation college graduate from Turkiye, he is a prominent advocate of diversity and global health equity. Atalay earned his Master of Science degree in Health Economics, Policy, and Law from Erasmus University, an endeavor enriched by the Jean Monnet Scholarship. His master's thesis, titled "Regulation of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: Upholding Public Health," was recognized as the Thesis of the Year in the Netherlands. Prior to pursuing his master's degree, he obtained a Doctor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Koc University. With a solid foundation in both medicine and international policy, Atalay is passionately working towards leveraging technological advancements to foster global health equity and improve public health outcomes. His ongoing research at Yale signifies a step further toward melding innovative solutions with pragmatic health policy frameworks.

Avery Naperala

Avery received her B.S. from Christopher Newport University in 2021, where she studied Environmental Biology, Business Administration, and Leadership Studies. She then joined the YSPH Environmental Health Sciences department and earned her M.P.H. in 2023. Following graduation, she began her career with Roux, an environmental consulting firm, working as a health scientist on their human health risk assessment team. Outside of school and work, Avery enjoys being engaged in her local community, teaching fitness classes, and spending time in nature, and she is excited to serve as an AYA representative.

Dr. Chaguza is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at the Yale School of Public Health, Yale University. His research uses large genomic and epidemiological datasets of microbial pathogens (bacteria and viruses) to understand pathogenesis, molecular evolution, the genetic basis of phenotypes, antimicrobial resistance, transmission, and epidemiology to inform public health - disease control and prevention. His research at Yale primarily focuses on understanding the evolution and epidemiology of viral pathogens of public health importance, including but not limited to SARS-CoV-2, rotavirus, monkeypox, and dengue virus. Beyond viruses, his research focuses on comparative genomics of bacterial pathogens, including but not limited to Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus), Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus species. Christabelle Ong

Christabelle Ong is a second-year MPH candidate concentrating in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health and a graduate research associate for the Yale-Griffin CDC Prevention Research Center (PRC). Prior to Yale, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, honors degree in psychology from Yale-NUS College. She has worked with a number of student welfare organizations, the Singapore Ministry of Health, the Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center, and the New Haven Coordinated Food Assistance Network. Clarion Johnson

Clarion E Johnson, ‘76 M.D., Council Vice-Chair retired from ExxonMobil as its Global Medical Director. He is presently Co-Chair of the Public Private Partnership at the National Academy of Sciences. He serves as Vice Chair on this Council and is a member of the Yale Healthcare Conference Advisory Board.He sits on the Boards of the Milbank Memorial Fund, the de Beaumont Foundation, Bon Secours Mercy Hospital System, Arch Diocese of New York's Care health system and Friends of the National Library of Medicine. In January of 2020 he was honored with a lifetime appointment as a National Associate of the National Research Council.Clarion is past chair of The Joint Commission's International and Research Boards, The Virginia Health Care Foundation and City Lights School. Dan Weinberger is an Associate Professor in Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases at Yale School of Public Health. His research uses a combination of quantitative analysis, laboratory experiments and field work to understand the epidemiology and biology of respiratory infections. Recent work has focused on developing novel analytical methods for the evaluation of vaccines using time series and spatial data. He collaborates widely with public health agencies and academic organizations around the world on these issues. He earned his PhD in biological sciences from Harvard School of Public Health, with a focus on Infectious Disease Epidemiology, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies in the Fogarty International Center at the NIH.Research: The research in the Weinberger Lab is at the intersection of microbiology and epidemiology. We focus on understanding the biological and epidemiological drivers of respiratory infections, including pneumococcus, RSV, influenza, and Legionella. Major research areas include understanding the biological drivers of the emergence of rare pneumococcal serotypes following vaccine introduction, developing novel statistical approaches to evaluate vaccine impact from observational data, evaluating the importance of interactions among respiratory pathogens, and understanding environmental drivers of Legionellosis. We employ a variety of tools including experimental and quantitative approaches. Our work is funded by grants from the NIH/NIAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Emerging Infections Program (a collaboration between the CDC, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and Yale). You can learn more about our research here. Teaching: I teach the Public Health Surveillance course at YSPH. This class uses a mix of lectures, cases studies, and hands on data analysis exercises. Students learn to perform common surveillance analyses including aberration detection (e.g., CUSUM), time series analysis, and spatial cluster detection (SATSCAN). Students learn to do these analyses in either SAS or R.

Darryl Crompton, '76 M.P.H., has had a distinguished career as a social justice and human rights advocate, lawyer, and academic. He has helped numerous non-profit, for-profit, and start-up organizations navigate challenging legal, business, and policy issues. He has served as a reliable and trusted lawyer and advisor to education officials, corporate leaders, and non-profit officials.Darryl served as Tuskegee University's first General Counsel, Vice President for Legal Affairs, and Vice President for Government Affairs. Earlier, Mr. Crompton was a professor of healthcare law at the University of Alabama in Birmingham for 13 years. Mr. Crompton has served as staff in the California State Senate, the California State Assembly, and the US House of Representatives. Crompton lectures frequently on various legal and policy issues, and has been active in numerous community, charity, and religious organizations, including Leadership Greater Washington. A native of Los Angeles, California, he has degrees from Yale University, the University of California Davis School of Law, and the University of California, Los Angeles. He is currently serving a member of the Yale Alumni Association Executive Director's DEI Working Group. He also serves as a member of the Southeastern Health Equity Council. Dashni Sathasivam, '19 M.P.H., Health Equity Solutions, Program Manager. Dashni Sathasivam is compelled by the intersection of health policy and advocacy and believes engaging communities and amplifying the voices of those directly impacted by policies as central to achieving structural changes that advance health equity. Originally from Wisconsin, her role as the Latino Outreach Coordinator with the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center's Cancer Health Disparities Initiative and service as a City Year Milwaukee AmeriCorps Member informed her community-based participatory approach to health and partnership building. Dashni graduated with a Master's in Public Health in health policy from the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH). In recognition of her commitment to social justice within YSPH and the wider New Haven community, she was awarded the inaugural YSPH Student Award for Outstanding Contributions in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Gender & Women's Studies and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

David Dull

David Dull, '71 B.A., '82 J.D., is a director of Ostendo Technologies, Inc. and OnRamp Wireless, Inc. and a business advisor to several other privately-held electronics, water science and bioscience companies. In 2009, he retired after 11 years as a senior executive and general counsel of Broadcom Corporation, where he was responsible for legal affairs, intellectual property strategy and development, and mergers and acquisitions. Previously, as a partner in the law firm of Irell & Manella LLP, he represented clients in the entertainment and technology industries. For five years before and after law school, Mr. Dull was a staff member of the United Nations Association of the U.S.A., a non-profit research and advocacy organization. Mr. Dull is a trustee of Sage Hill School and Sarah Lawrence College and a former member of the Yale Law School Association Executive Committee. He and his wife reside in Newport Beach, CA. Debbie Humphries

Dr. Humphries has a broad background in public health research and practice. She has been a consultant in the areas of diet and physical activity behavior change, sustainability of community health programs, program monitoring and evaluation, and training in participatory monitoring and evaluation for organizations in Vietnam, Africa and in the United States. She has extended that reach through her Practice-based Community Health Research course which places student groups with agencies in the State of Connecticut to plan and evaluate programs. Sample projects include: Determining the Best Time to Implement Routine HIV Testing in Jails; Barriers to Accessing Health Care and Health Needs of Undocumented Immigrants; Evaluation of HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and care in Connecticut Correctional Facilities; and Strategies to Reduce Low Birth Weight in New Haven: An Evaluation of the Outreach Strategy of the New Haven Maternal and Child Health Department. Humphries is also a member of the Community Research Engagement steering committee at Yale.Dr. Humphries' research addresses interactions between nutrition and infectious disease, as well as programmatic approaches to improving public health. This work has taken her to Asia and Africa where she has studied environmental factors and intestinal helminth infections and their relationship to anemia as well as effectiveness of intervention programs. She is currently collaborating on a longitudinal study to characterize parasite and host factors affecting response to deworming in Ghana.

Dillon was born, raised, and currently resides in California's East Bay. His work with University of California's Nutrition Policy Institute galvanized him to pursue YSPH's MPH with a focus on Health Policy. During his first year at Yale, Dillon served as YSPH's Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS) representative and founded the Asian Graduate Network, an affiliate organization of the Asian American Cultural Center. By his second year, he was elected into the role of GPSS Vice President and served on two university-wide Student Advisory Committees. She is interested in the evolution and control of viruses of public health concern, especially those which have historically been neglected.She applies molecular epidemiological and phylodynamic techniques to explore the spatial and temporal spread of viruses in close to real-time, and has most recently contributed to SARS-CoV-2 genomic analysis and control efforts in the UK.

Dr. Amber Hromi-Fiedler is currently a Research Scientist in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Yale School of Public Health. Dr. Hromi-Fiedler obtained her B.A. in Psychobiology from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, in 1994. In 2002, she obtained her M.P.H. from the University of Connecticut and in 2007 she obtained her Ph.D. from the same university. Dr. Hromi-Fiedler specializes in community nutrition with emphasis in maternal and child health (MCH) both domestically and internationally. Internationally, she participated in the implementation of an MCH project with Save the Children in Uganda. In Ghana, with funding from the NIH, she developed and taught an intensive course to build the capacity of local Ghanaian health professional by enhancing their knowledge and skill of analyzing nutritional data using a public domain software available through the Centers for Disease Control. In Ghana, she also collaborated in the training of nutrition staff and the development of nutrition education materials for Liberian refugee caretakers at Buduburam Refugee Camp. The nutrition education materials focused on child nutrition as well as food safety and are currently being used and distributed to caretakers to improve nutritional outcomes among Liberian refugee children. She also conducted a postdoctoral summer fellowship in Ghana examining dietary practices, food availability, and nutritional status among Liberian refugees and Ghanaians living in and around Buduburam Refugee Camp. She continues to work in Ghana on infant and young child feeding projects. Domestically, she has taken the lead on the adaptation of the U.S. Food Security Scale, a national instrument to measure food insecurity, among pregnant Latina women. Dr. Hromi-Fiedler implemented one of the first longitudinal studies in Hartford, CT, examining the association between food insecurity during pregnancy and infant outcomes among Latinas. Dr. Hromi-Fiedler has also conducted feasibility research to develop a community-based intervention to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among low-income pregnant Latinas. Edieal Pinker

Professor Pinker's research in healthcare looks at questions related to patient flow and capacity management within both in-patient and out-patient settings. In the out-patient setting he has studied the division of labor in primary care practices and advanced access appointment scheduling systems. In the in-patient setting he has studied how bed configurations can impact access to care and how congestion in ICUs impacts patient flow. Edward H. Kaplan

Edward H. Kaplan obtained his BA from McGill University with First Class Honors in Economic and Urban Geography, and proceeded to graduate study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he completed three masters' degrees (in Operations Research, City Planning, and Mathematics) in addition to his doctorate in Urban Studies. He currently serves as the William N. and Marie A. Beach Professor of Management Sciences at the Yale School of Management, Professor of Public Health at the Yale School of Medicine, and Professor of Engineering in the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. An elected member of both the National Academy of Engineering (2003) and the Institute of Medicine (2004), Kaplan is an expert in operations research, mathematical modeling and statistics who studies problems in public policy and management. His recent research has focused on counterterror topics such as the tactical prevention of suicide bombings, bioterror preparedness, and response logistics in the event of a smallpox or anthrax attack. His work on smallpox was awarded the 2003 Koopman Prize of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) Military Applications Society, while his models evaluating suicide-bomber-detector schemes received the same award in 2005. Jo joined the Pitzer Lab as a PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases in the Fall of 2021, where they use mathematical models to study the dynamics of infectious disease transmission and vaccination in low-resource settings, with a focus on typhoid fever. Prior to arriving at Yale, Jo worked on mathematical modeling and forecasting for influenza and COVID-19 at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Joshua Warren is an associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the Yale School of Public Health. He received his Ph.D. in statistics from North Carolina State University in 2011. Dr. Warren's research focuses on statistical methods in public health with an emphasis on environmental health problems. Much of his work involves introducing spatial and spatiotemporal models in the Bayesian setting to learn more about associations between environmental exposures, such as air pollution, and various health outcomes including preterm birth, low birth weight, and congenital anomalies. He also has interest in developing and applying spatiotemporal models in collaborative settings such as epidemiology, geography, nutrition, and glaucoma research. Kathe also helped manage data governance for external release of Aetna data for research. From 2012 - 2020 Kathe worked closely with the Harvard Medical School, specifically the Departments of Biomedical Informatics and Health Policy, and encouraged and supported the growth of clinical and policy research using health insurance claims data. Harvard and Aetna built a multi-year data enclave that offered claims experience on 70+ M members over ten years. Researchers used these data to investigate questions ranging from the efficacy of preventive screening to the inheritability of autism. These data, and the associated analytic techniques, have been introduced to medical students as part of their training. Prior to joining Aetna, Kathe was Vice President and Practice Leader for Health Plan customers at Medstat (now IBM Health) where she was responsible for analytic and consulting solutions for the managed care market. Her research explores modeling, inferential, and other methodological issues that often arise in applied problems with complex clustered and network data, and standard statistical theory and methods are no longer adequate to support the goals of the analysis. Laura is eager to apply advanced statistical methodology to provide evidence on effective strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations. Mark Greenwold, B.A. '66, is an attorney in Washington, D.C. and Senior Consultant to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the leading global and national advocacy organization for tobacco control. Mr. Greenwold advises the Campaign on federal and state regulatory issues and represents a coalition of national public health groups in litigation regarding tobacco control. Mr. Greenwold also represents States and local governments in litigation against the tobacco industry. Previously, Mr. Greenwold served as the first Chief Counsel for Tobacco for the National Association of Attorneys General, where he represented all the States in the implementation and defense of the tobacco Master Settlement Agreement of 1998. Mr. Greenwold had previously spent 27 years in private practice in Washington specializing in complex civil litigation. While in private practice he worked with the Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs on matters ranging from asylum to disability rights.Mr. Greenwold graduated from Yale with a B.A. degree magna cum laude in History, the Arts and Letters in 1966 and from Harvard Law School with a J.D. degree cum laude in 1969. Mary G. Lawrence, M.D., '98 M.P.H., is the Deputy Director of the Department of Defense/Veterans Affairs Vision Center of Excellence in Washington, DC. Nathan Grubaugh joined the faculty at Yale School of Public Health in 2018. Before going to graduate school, he spent 7 years working in the biotech industry developing early phase vaccine candidates. He earned his MS in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University (2011) while conducting research at the NIH and the US Army Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (focus on mosquito-borne virus surveillance). Dr. Grubaugh earned his PhD in microbiology from Colorado State University in 2016 (focus on West Nile virus evolution), and went on to be a postdoctoral fellow at The Scripps Research Institute to study the 2015-2017 Zika virus epidemic. Now at Yale, the Grubaugh Lab uses genomics and phylogenetics to uncover the epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary determinants of virus outbreaks. They primarily focus on mosquito- and tick-borne viruses, like dengue, West Nile, and Powassan, that are increasingly spreading into new areas and have high outbreak potential. The Grubaugh Lab is diverse and multidisciplinary, including expertise in molecular biology, phylogenetics, statistics, and mathematical modeling. His lab was critical during the COVID-19 response, from designing and evaluating diagnostics (such as SalivaDirect) to establishing the Yale SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Surveillance Initiative to track emerging variants. Expanding on this work, the lab is an academic partner for the Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence to foster and improve innovation and technical capacity in pathogen genomics, molecular epidemiology, and bioinformatics to better prevent, control, and respond to microbial threats of public health importance. Nelba Márquez-Greene

Nelba holds a Bachelor of Music from the Hartt School and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Joseph College. Nelba taught and supervised at the Family Therapy program at the University of Winnipeg's Aurora Family Therapy Centre and later worked as the Coordinator for Klingberg Family Therapy Center's outpatient child and adolescent psychiatric clinic. She also served as adjunct faculty at Central Connecticut State University. Nelba founded the CTAMFT (Connecticut Association for Marriage and Family Therapy) Diversity Committee and served on the CTAMFT Board of Directors. For her advocacy, she received the 2004 Minority Fellowship Award by the AAMFT, the 2004 Distinguished Professional Service Award, and the 2013 Service to Families Award by the CTAMFT. Rebecca Katz, M.P.H. '98, Ph.D. is a Professor and Director of the Center for Global Health Science and Security, and holds joint appointments in Georgetown University Medical Center and the School of Foreign Service. She teaches courses on global health diplomacy, global health security, and emerging infectious diseases in the Science, Technology and International Affairs, Security Studies, and Global Infectious Disease Programs. Prior to coming to Georgetown in 2016, she spent ten years at The George Washington University as faculty in the Milken Institute School of Public Health. Rock G. Positano

Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSc has been on staff at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) since 1991 and is internationally known for his non-surgical approach for the treatment of foot disorders. He serves in the capacity of Founder and Co-Director of the Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Service and the Joe DiMaggio Heel Pain Center at HSS. In addition to being a faculty member of Yale University's School of Public Health, he is also on staff at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and Lenox Hill/Northwell Health. Dr. Positano was featured on the front page of The New York Times in an article concerning the dangers of cosmetic foot surgery, and was recently featured in the Times as a contributing physician on the harsh impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on feet and ankles. It was in this article that he coined the phrase "pandemic foot". He has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed articles and has served as the editor of over a dozen medical textbooks ranging from foot and ankle orthopedics, heel disorders, to sports medicine. His thesis on Foot Health was approved "With Honors" and "With Distinction" by the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Public Health in 1989. Outside of the world of medicine, Dr. Positano is also a published and celebrated author. His recent books include Dinner with DiMaggio: Memories Of An American Hero by Simon & Schuster, and most recently, in October 2022, released his book Street Smart, also by Simon & Schuster. Street Smart features memoirs by dozens of acclaimed individuals including Dr. Anthony Fauci, Arianna Huffington, Michael Imperioli, and others. Dr. Positano also works as an executive music producer, having worked alongside Grammy Award winners Phil Ramone, Jack Douglas, and Neil Young. His most recent record release is the Cowsills' Rhythm of the World, released in September 2022 by Omnivore Records. Referring to his love for both healthcare and the arts, Dr. Positano calls it "the tether that centers both my left brain and right brain." Tim Mercer

Tim Mercer is the the inaugural holder of the JP's Peace, Love & Happiness Family Foundation Endowed Chair in the Department of Population Health. He is also a primary care physician for the Health Care for the Homeless program with CommUnityCare, Austin's largest federally qualified health center.Fundamentally, he is interested in solving health system challenges and promoting health through community-engaged scholarship and service to improve access, quality and equity in health for vulnerable populations globally and locally. In addition to his clinical practice, teaching and mentoring, he implements and evaluates health system and community-based programs and conducts implementation research. He has raised over $10 million in federal, corporate, foundation and philanthropic funding, serving as project director or principal investigator of multiple projects and partnerships to achieve these goals.At Dell Med, Mercer leads the global health program, which aims to leverage the academic missions of service, education and research to improve health and advance health equity for vulnerable populations globally, while building interdisciplinary collaborations to address social and structural determinants of health, strengthen health systems and cultivate globally minded leaders. He earned a master's degree in public health with a focus in social and behavioral sciences from the Yale School of Public Health and then completed a combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency at Duke University Medical Center. William B.
