Dr Carlos Siu Lam's current research interest is in the gaming industry of Macao. He has been a visiting scholar at the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming, University of Nevada Reno, USA. He has published articles in such gaming journals as International Gambling Studies, Gaming Law Review and Economics, and UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal. Apart from presenting papers at conferences organized by such organizations as the International Association of Gaming Regulators, he has written gambling reports for foreign jurisdictions such as Bulgaria. In addition, Dr Siu's book On the Frontline in Macao: Casino Employees, Informal Learning & Customer Service has been published by the world's leading publisher in gaming education, the UNLV Gaming Press.
Professor Carlos Ascenso André, PhD was Dean of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (2006-2013) and Deputy-President of the Scientific Board (1994-1996); he was also Dean of the Portuguese Catholic University - Leiria for several periods between 1992 and 2005 and is currently Director of the Portuguese Teaching and Research Centre, Macao Polytechnic Institute.
He has taught in the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra since 1983, gaining his tenure in 1992. He has also been a Visiting Professor at several universities including the University of East Asia, Macao (1984), the University of Hamburg and University of Göttingen (1992/93) and the University of Poitiers (1994 and 1996). He has been a Professor at MPI since May 2013.
He received his Master in Classical Literature in 1984 and his PhD in Latin Literature in 1990, both from the University of Coimbra.
His main research areas include Latin Literature from Rome and from the 16th century, and Portuguese Literature. He has been strongly engaged in collaborative projects with several lusophone countries, especially Mozambique, Timor, Brazil and Angola, and has paid particular attention to Macao, which he visited for the first time in 1984 but to which he has subsequently returned frequently. With regard to his lusophone activities he was one of the founders of Associação Internacional de Lusitnaistas as well as its Vice-President and, for three terms, its General Secretary-Treasurer.
Professor Carlos Ascenso André has participated in over 200 conferences in Portugal and elsewhere (Spain, France, Croatia, Canada, USA, Germany, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, S. Tomé e Príncipe, England, Japan and China) and is the author of 18 books and around two hundred articles in international academic journals or books.

He received the Prémio Jacinto do Prado Coelho, da Secção Portuguesa da Associação Internacional de Críticos Literários, 2006 / Jacinto do Prado Coelho Award of the Portuguese Section of Literary Criticism International Association in 2006.

Professor Daisaku Ikeda is the Honorary President of Soka Gakkai and President of Soka Gakkai International. Devoted to promoting world peace, educational development and cultural exchange, he is the founder of more than 20 educational and cultural institutions at home and abroad, including the Institute of Oriental Philosophy, Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, Soka Schools in Japan, Soka University of America, and so on.
Professor Ikeda firmly believes that human beings can only develop mutual trust and understanding through sincere dialogue. To this end, he has held and published many dialogues with leading political, educational or cultural figures around the world, such as Arnold Toynbee (Choose Life), Jin Yong (Compassionate Light in Asia), Chang Shuhong (The Radiance of Dunhuang), Mikhail Gorbachev (Moral Lessons of the Twentieth Century), B. Wilson (Human Values in a Changing World), and Aurelio Peccei (Before It is Too Late). Other books include The Human Revolution, The New Human Revolution, and The Wisdom of the Lotus.
From 1974 to the present, Professor Ikeda has delivered speeches in universities and research institutions in 18 different countries and regions, including Harvard University, Columbia University and Bologna University. He has received more than 300 honorary doctorates and professorships from higher education institutions such as Moscow University, the University of Glasgow, the University of Denver, Peking University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
For his humanitarian endeavours in a range of fields, Professor Ikeda has been the recipient of awards from over 22 countries, including the National Order of the Southern Cross of the Republic of Brazil, the Medal of the Grand Officer of Arts and Letters (France), the Peace and Friendship Cup (China), Knight Grand Cross of the Most Noble Order of the Crown (Thailand), the Order of Merit "Grand Officer" (Italy), the Russian Federation Order of Friendship, and the Hwa-Gwan Order of Cultural Merit (South Korea). In 1983 he received the United Nations Peace Award.
Professor Henry Alfred Kissinger was the 56th US Secretary of State, a position he held from 1973 to 1977. He also served as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from 1969 to 1975. In 1983 he was appointed by President Reagan to chair the National Bipartisan Commission on Central America until it ceased operation in 1985, and from 1984 to 1990 he served as a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board. From 1986 to 1988 he was a member of the Commission on Integrated Long-Term Strategy of the National Security Council and Defense Department.
Professor Kissinger graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1950 and received Master of Arts and PhD degrees from Harvard University in 1952 and 1954. From 1954 to 1969 he was a member of the faculty of Harvard University, in both the Department of Government and the Center for International Affairs. He was Director of the Harvard International Seminar from 1952 to 1969.
At present, Professor Kissinger is a member of the Defense Policy Board; Director of the International Rescue Committee; Chairman of the International Advisory Board of American International Group, Inc.; an Honorary Governor of the Foreign Policy Association; an Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee; and Chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., an international consulting firm, among his other activities.

Among the awards Professor Kissinger has received have been the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973; the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the nation's highest civilian award) in 1977; and the Medal of Liberty (given one time to ten foreign-born American leaders) in 1986.

Professor Laurie Cuthbert, Emeritus Professor in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), for many years was Co-Director of the Joint Degree Programme that he established between QMUL and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Professor Cuthbert also served as Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering in QMUL for 9 years and acted on international expert groups for the Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and for the German Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Professor Cuthbert has vast experience in telecommunications research. The research group he established in the late 1980s in the QMUL Department of Electronic Engineering was one of the first to be active in ATM research around that time. In the past 10 years he presented and published more than 100 papers in various publications and events. Research grants he received during his academic career amounted to more than 7 million pounds, several being important EU research projects.
Professor Cuthbert was the technical manager of the EU IST projects "SHUFFLE", "SAFEGUARD" and "ADAMANT". In 2009 he and his research partners, Dr John Bigham and Dr Clive Parini, successfully received a US patent for their research "Intelligent Control of Radio Resources in a Wireless Network". Dedicated to nurturing professional talents, he successfully supervised 31 PhD dissertations and 2 MPhil dissertations, as well as acting as external examiner to numerous PhD candidates in the UK and other countries.

Professor Li Zhaoxing is a senior Chinese diplomat and an expert in international affairs. Currently he is a member of the standing committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the NPC, a member of the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Honorable President of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, and the President of the China Association for International Friendly Contact. He is also an honorary professor of many Mainland universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Professor Li began his diplomatic career in Africa in the 1970s, where he first served as staff member and attache of the Chinese Embassy in Kenya. Positions he has served since then included staff member, Deputy Division Chief, Deputy Director General and Director General of the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Assistant to the Foreign Minister; Deputy Foreign Minister; First Secretary at the Chinese Embassy in the Kingdom of Lesotho; China's Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations; and the Chinese Ambassador to the US. In 2003, he was sworn in as the ninth Foreign Minister of the country.
In his diplomatic life of 40 years, Professor Li has made huge contributions to the expansion and the development of the country's diplomatic affairs. His talents were manifested notably in his service as the Chinese Ambassador to the US. In face of the crisis evoked in 1999 as a result of the NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Professor Li endeavoured to keep US-Chinese relations on track and move to steady improvement and development. On January 29th, 2001, the last day of his term in the position, the Mayor of Washington DC announced that day as "Li Zhaoxing's Day" to recognize his contributions to the US-Chinese relations. In 2004 he received the Chilean Neruda Presidential Medal from the Chilean Ambassador to China, on the 100th birthday of Pablo Neruda, a renowned Chilean poet and a Nobel Prize Winner.
Known as a "poetic foreign minister", Professor Li is a scholar of some literary attainment. He has published several books including Colors of the Land: A Trip to Kenya, China the Youthful,and The Collected Poems of Li Zhaoxing.
Professor Qin Dahe is a world renowned scientist in glaciology, climatology and geography. He is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a member of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has been the Permanent Representative of China with the WMO, the Administrator of China Meteorological Administration, and President of the Working Group for Glaciology of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. Currently he is the Co-chair of Working Group I of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC WGI), the President of the Chinese Meteorological Society, the Director of the Division of Earth Sciences of CAS, and the Director of the State Key Laboratory for Cryospheric Science.
For over two decades, Professor Qin has been involved in research on glaciology, cryosphere and global changes, organizing and participating in outfield scientific expeditions in Antarctica, Arctic, Tibetan Plateau and Western China. He founded the State Key Laboratory for Cryospheric Science, and launched the experimental and observational studies on the contemporary processes of snow and ice and their biogeochemical cycles in Western China.
Over the years, Professor Qin has published more than 200 papers and monographs, including amongst others The Physical Process and Contemporary Climatic and Environmental Record in the Snow Cover of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and Glaciers and Ecological Environment of Tibetan Plateau. Important research projects he has led, to name but a few, have included "Cryospheric Processes in China and Their Climatic, Hydrologic and Ecologic Effects and Adaptation" (National Basic Research Program of China - 973 Program), "The Study on the Meteorological Development Strategy in China", "Climate and Environment Changes in China", and "Assessment of Environment Change in Western China".
In 2007, as a co-chair of IPCC WGI, Professor Qin was jointly awarded The Nobel Peace Prize. In 2008 he won the 53rd IMO Prize. He also received 10 different awards at national, provincial and ministerial level in natural sciences as well as the NOAA/OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper Award. In 2011 he was elected Honorary Member of the American Meteorological Society.
