Anne Klinefelter is the Henry P. Brandis Distinguished Professor of Law. She teaches courses in privacy law and writes and speaks on information law and policy topics, often as these areas apply to libraries and legal information management. As Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies in Fall of 2019, she taught United States Privacy Law at the University of Helsinki and researched aspects of European Union data protection law. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Future of Privacy Forum. Professor Klinefelter is a former Director of the UNC Law Library and an Adjunct Professor in the UNC School of Information and Library Science. Her leadership in law librarianship was recognized in 2023 with the American Association of Law Schools American Association of Law Schools Section on Law Libraries and Legal Information Award for Outstanding Service and Contributions to the Profession, and in 2019 with the Frederick Charles Hicks Award for Outstanding Contributions to Academic Law Librarianship from the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) section on Academic Law Libraries. In 2012 she received the AALL Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2012 for her work in privacy law and policy relating to libraries.

Anne Hogewood joined UNC School of Law's Career Development Office as Director of Judicial Clerkships in April 2022. Hogewood assists all law students towards their career goals, but her focus is helping those students interested in obtaining judicial clerkships in state or federal courts. Before joining Carolina Law, Hogewood worked for seven years at the North Carolina Court of Appeals In Raleigh. She has served as a guardian ad litem volunteer and on several nonprofit boards of directors. Hogewood began her legal career as a judicial law clerk and then proudly served as an assistant public defender in Mecklenburg County.

Barbara Fedders is an Associate Professor of Law. She is the Director of Clinical Programs and faculty supervisor of the Youth Justice Clinic, in which her students represent young people in delinquency proceedings and school suspension appeals and adults convicted as minors in parole proceedings and clemency petitions. In 2018, she received the UNC School of Law Robert G. Byrd Award for Excellence and Creativity in Teaching. She lectures at continuing legal education programs across the country and in 2019 was named a certified trainer by the National Juvenile Defender Center Juvenile Training Immersion Program. Her research focuses on the intersection between criminal law and school discipline, policing and inequality, and the legal regulation of LGBTQ youth in child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Her scholarship has appeared or is forthcoming in the California Law Review, UCLA Law Review, Iowa Law Review, Indiana Law Journal, and North Carolina Law Review, among others. Fedders also writes for popular audiences, authoring two book chapters and serving as co-editor and contributing author of the Guide to Student Advocacy in North Carolina. Her article Schooling at Risk (Iowa Law Review 2018) was awarded the Steven S. Goldberg Award for Excellence in Legal Writing by the Education Law Association. She is a former Thorp Faculty Engaged Scholar.
Fedders attended New York University School of Law, where she was a Root-Tilden-Kern Public Interest Scholar and co-founder of the Prisoners' Rights and Education Project. After law school, she was a Soros Justice Fellow and staff attorney at the Massachusetts Committee for Public Counsel Services, a clinical supervisor at Boston College Law School, and a clinical instructor at the Harvard Law School Criminal Justice Institute. She is a graduate of the National Criminal Defense College Trial Practice Institute.

Beth Posner joined the Carolina Law faculty in 2004 and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Law. Her area of practice and teaching focuses primarily on domestic violence and sexual assault and related family law and immigration issues. Posner teaches nationally as a faculty member for the ABA Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence. Additionally, she regularly provides substantive technical assistance to domestic violence and family law attorneys and coordinates and participates in trainings for lawyers, advocates, students, and social services providers on issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault and trauma throughout the state.
Posner graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law where she was a Dan Pollitt Fellow, served on the J. Braxton Craven, Jr. Memorial Moot Court Bench, and founded the Conference on Race, Class, Gender, and Ethnicity. After law school, Posner coordinated and oversaw statewide domestic violence initiatives for Legal Services of North Carolina and then spent three years practicing indigent criminal defense with the North Carolina Office of the Appellate Defender before returning to Legal Aid, practicing in the area of family law and domestic violence.

Bianca Mack is the Associate Dean for Equity, Admissions and Student Affairs at the University of North Carolina School of Law. Katz is Senior Company Counsel (Regulatory and Compliance) for Wells Fargo & Company in Charlotte. Katz's distinguished career began with government service. He worked with the Department of Justice, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Office of Thrift Supervision, and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency where he was Director of the Litigation Division. He then practiced law with firms in D.C. and Charlotte before beginning his in-house career with Wachovia. Prior to Wachovia's merger into Wells Fargo, Katz was the Senior Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Wachovia. Katz received his undergraduate and law school degrees from Tulane University. He is an active member of the ABA Business Law Section's Banking Law Committee.

Herring was hired as BB&T's first lawyer in 1971. When Herring retired after 32 years at BB&T, the bank had grown from $250 million in assets when he started to over $90 billion in assets, making it then the 11th largest financial holding company in the country and the eighth largest retail insurance broker in the United States. BB&T now operates over 1400 bank branches in 11 states and the District of Columbia. It was a pioneer in the acquisition of thrift institutions and the use of merger-conversions.

Smith has been a part of the Banking Institute since our first program in 1997, when he was serving as general counsel of Centura Banks. Smith was named the North Carolina Commissioner of Banks in 2002, a position he held for ten years. While Commissioner, he served as Chairman of the Conference of State Bank Supervisors.
From 2012 to 2018, Smith served as the Monitor of Consent Judgments between the U.S. Government and 49 states on the one hand, and eight of the largest mortgage servicers in the United States, on the other hand, four of which were affiliated with the nation's largest financial holding companies. He and his team validated the granting of over $23 billion in credited relief by the servicers to over 675,000 distressed borrowers. Smith also monitored a separate settlement with JPMorgan Chase that resulted in over $4 billion of additional credit relief to over 168,000 borrowers.
At various points in his career, Smith has been in private practice in New York, DC, and most recently with Poyner Spruill in Raleigh, from which he recently retired. Smith now serves as a Senior Fellow of the Global Financial Markets Center at Duke Law School.

Cowell joined Cameron-Brown Company, a mortgage banking subsidiary of First Union, in 1972. In 1978, he became general counsel of First Union and served in that capacity until his retirement from the bank in 1999. Polking joined NCNB Corporation (one of Bank of America's predecessors) in 1970. Polking was the bank's second lawyer. He was named general counsel in 1988 and now presides over a legal department that numbered over 230 attorneys prior to the consummation of the Fleet Financial merger. NCNB, then NationsBank and now Bank of America, is widely credited with helping to dismantle geographic restrictions on banking. Bank of America will hold the most deposits in the United States after its merger with Fleet, and it will truly be a bank with a nationwide branch system.
