Isabelle Cherney, Ph.D., a respected social scientist and educator who was invited by the Obama administration on four occasions to participate in White House conferences, became the 13th president of Mount Mary University on July 1, 2022 and will be formally installed in an inauguration ceremony on March 31, 2023.
Cherney's academic research focuses on the effects of gender on STEM education and career pathways. She has experience in launching new programs, supporting educators and establishing early college and dual degree programs that provide high school students early exposure to college. A nationally acclaimed researcher, Cherney was invited by the Obama administration on four occasions to participate in White House conferences.
She was previously vice provost for graduate education at Merrimack College near Boston, Mass. Cherney has held multiple roles at the college since 2016, including dean of the Winston School of Education and Social Policy and founding director of the Merrimack Institute for New Teacher Support.
Cherney has also held positions at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., since 2000, including professor, director of the honors program, founding director of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in leadership, and the associate dean of the Graduate School and College of Professional Studies.

Kristen Carioti, Ph.D., assistant professor of business administration, was recently cited for her entrepreneur study, "Reconciling Gender Differences in the Returns to Education in Self-Employment: Does Occupation Matter?" Compared to self-employed men, self-employed women have more education but considerably lower earnings, generating differences in the returns to education by gender. Kristen explores gender differences in earnings among the self-employed. Read more about the study and about Professor Carioti.
Kristen Roche, director of Mount Mary's MBA program and assistant professor in business administration, is finding ways to not only make her students more aware of the gender wage gap, she's giving them the skills they need to close it. By creating an active learning role-playing exercise on the "negotiation gap," she provides the young women in her program the power to develop a strategy for negotiating their own salaries. Lynn Kapitan, Ph. D., director of the Professional Doctorate of Art Therapy program has seen how art therapy changes lives on the individual and community level. Lynn travels to Nicaragua annually to bring art therapy to women survivors of domestic abuse allowing them to develop their voices and hone their leadership skills. She supports the next generation of art therapists. "Women are very influential in the world. If we can raise their voices, it will impact the next generation in a big way," says Dr. Kapitan.

Mary Ellen Kohn-Buday, Ph.D., associate professor of World Languages/Spanish and chairperson of the World Languages department, was awarded the "Excellence in Teaching" award by Mount Mary University for the 2013-14 academic year for her demonstration of innovative teaching techniques, dedication, enthusiasm, support of her students and more. Mary Ellen is always eager to get into the classroom, bring culture to her students and is known to make a mean gazpacho!
