Gene M. Lynn was among the original benefactors who provided the seed money to start FAU's nursing program in 1979. Mrs. Lynn's continued support over more than two decades has allowed the College to enhance its programs, especially those focused on caring, gerontology and community outreach to the underserved.
In October 2005, we witnessed her latest tribute of caring as we dedicated the new home of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. The new facility, which positions the College to provide innovative leadership in nursing education, reflects Mrs. Lynn's belief in and passion for nursing. Lynn College of Nursing graduate Teri Chenot, Ed.D., M.S.N., ‘08, B.S.N. ‘07 (Cum Laude), began a new position at The Ohio State University College of Nursing this fall as a clinical professor. In her new role, she will be primarily engaged in teaching activities, scholarship, and service. Among the courses she will teach include topics in quality, safety, and innovation in the field.
Dr. Chenot's nursing journey started as a patient care tech working on a medical-surgical floor at Boca Raton Community Hospital. At the same time, she was earning her associate degree in nursing at Broward State College, after which she obtained her B.H.S. degree in Health Administration at Florida Atlantic. She returned to FAU and obtained both her B.S.N. and M.S.N. degrees from the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. At that time, she worked in a clinical setting in the areas of women's and community health.
"I had a great experience at FAU," shared Dr. Chenot. "FAU is the most innovative university in the state. The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing has innovative programs in a caring environment. My professor, Dr. Rose Sherman, is a transformational leader who inspired me to continue pursuing higher goals."
In 2003, she was appointed the first patient safety officer at UF Health, Jacksonville. She soon completed her Ed.D. program at the University of North Florida, with a cognate in Adult Learning/Patient Safety. Her doctoral dissertation entitled, "Frameworks for Patient Safety in the Nursing Curriculum," was later published in the Journal of Nursing Education. For 13 years, Dr. Chenot was a tenured professor at Jacksonville University until her appointment as a clinical professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing this year.
"I enjoy the challenge of developing innovative programs, working with students to attain their success, and mentoring faculty to advance their careers," stated Dr. Chenot. "In the future, I intend to work in an exciting academic medical center to improve health outcomes, develop improved work environments, and make an international contribution to health care."
Dr. Chenot was inducted into the 2020 class of Distinguished Scholar Fellows in the Nursing Academy by the National Academies of Practice, and in 2019, she was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Nursing. Over the course of her successful career, she has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including the 2021 Quality and Safety Education for Nurses Linda Cronenwett Leadership Award, and she was named a top Nurse Educator by the "Great 100 Nurses of the Northeast Florida."
