The oldest campus-San Jose State University-was founded in 1857 and became the first institution of public higher education in California. California State University, Channel Islands is the newest CSU campus, opening in fall 2002, with freshmen arriving in fall 2003... The "value added" by a CSUSB education ranks in the top 4 percent in the nation, according to the Collegiate Learning Assessment, a sequence of tests used by hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide that measure student learning in the freshman and then in the senior year. First-to-second year retention rates are third highest among all CSU campuses... CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has the most diverse student population of any university in the Inland Empire, and it has the second highest African American and Hispanic enrollments of all public universities in California. Seventy percent of those who graduate are the first in their families to do so.
