Alan M. Johnson

Dr. Johnson attended Michigan Technological University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree with highest distinction in 1990. Subsequently, he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree with highest distinction as class valedictorian in 1994 from Michigan's Ferris State University (FSU) College of Optometry. Dr. Johnson has had specialty training at the CIBA Vision Contact Lens Research Clinic in Duluth, Georgia, and at the Grand Forks Air Force Base Hospital in North Dakota. In addition, Dr. Johnson has completed a one year post-graduate residency and two years of advanced practice in eye disease, cataract and refractive surgery co-management with The Eye Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah and Boise, Idaho. Dr. Johnson has been the recipient of the American Foundation for Vision Awareness Scholarship, the FSU College of Optometry Academic Recognition Award, and the CIBA Vision Contact Lens Achievement Award. Dr. Johnson has been an active member of several professional organizations including the American Optometric Association, Washington Association of Optometric Physicians, and the Idaho Optometric Association.He is board certified and a member of the team of Spokane Eye Clinic doctors.

Brandon J. McFadden

Dr. McFadden joined Spokane Eye Clinic in September 2017. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Utah in Exercise Physiology and later graduated from the Ohio State University College of Optometry. After Graduation, he went on to complete a residency in Ocular Disease-Cornea and Specialty Contact Lenses. Dr. McFadden has extensive training in pre- and post-op care of cataract surgeries. He specializes in routine eye care, glaucoma and cataract evaluation & Co-management, dry eyes, eye diseases, vision problems, Therapeutics - external eye disease, Lasik/PRK co-management. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Optometric Physicians of Washington, and the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. McFadden hails from Greeley, Colorado. He and his wife, Sarah, have three children. He is active in his church and enjoys biking and being outdoors in the Pacific Northwest.

Dallin J. Andersen

Dr. Andersen attended Brigham Young University in Provo, UT where he received his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and graduated with University Honors. He attended medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, WA and completed his internship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in general surgery. He completed his ophthalmology residency training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE where he received the "Golden Hands" award for demonstrating exceptional competence in ophthalmologic surgery. He was elected as Chief Resident. Finally, he completed a two-year Vitreoretinal Surgery fellowship at Midwest Retina, a busy private retina practice in Columbus, OH. Dr. Andersen is a retina specialist and has a particular interest in the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular holes and puckers, retinal detachments, and many other inherited and acquired vitreoretinal disorders. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists. He has completed both clinical and bench research in various areas of ophthalmology and has multiple publications. In particular, he has been involved in nearly a dozen clinical trials investigating the efficacy and safety of treatments for diabetic macular edema and neovascular age-related macular degeneration. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Andersen grew up in The Last Frontier (Anchorage, Alaska) and naturally has an affinity for the outdoors. He enjoys music including jazz piano, singing, and guitar. He boasts a unique hobby in extravagant pumpkin carving. He treasures his time with his family and believes in a work hard-play hard life philosophy. He is fluent in the Spanish Language and holds himself to a high standard in offering compassionate patient care.

Dr. Donald U. Stone

Dr. Donald U. Stone joined the Spokane Eye Clinic in August 2018. He is a cornea, external disease, cataract, and ocular inflammation specialist. After graduating with honors from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Dean McGee Eye Institute of the University of Oklahoma, followed by a fellowship in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery, and uveitis at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation of the University of California at San Francisco. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He then developed a consultation practice as a member of the faculty at the McGee Eye Institute, while also serving as cornea fellowship director and earning the rank of Associate Professor. Dr. Stone's next position was as the Director of Research and Senior Academic Consultant of the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as part of a collaboration with the Wilmer Eye Institute, part of the esteemed John Hopkins University system. Most recently he was an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute in Maryland. Dr. Stone's areas of clinical expertise include routine and complex cataracts, ocular surface disease, ocular surface tumors, ocular infectious and inflammatory diseases, and advanced surgical techniques such as selective anterior and posterior lamellar keratoplasty (corneal transplantation). Dr. Stone, his wife and young family are new to the Pacific Northwest and they look forward to the abundant opportunities to enjoy the regions cultural diversity and Cascadia's outdoors.

Emily M. Korszen

Dr. Korszen grew up in Florida, where she attended the University of Florida and earned a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiological Sciences. She then went to Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, where she graduated as valedictorian with her Doctor of Optometry degree. She moved across the country to Oregon for a residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses at Pacific University, gaining specialty training to support her passion for fitting therapeutic and medically necessary contact lenses. Before joining Spokane Eye Clinic, Dr. Korszen spent two years practicing in a medically-oriented clinic in Yakima, Washington. In addition to her interest in fitting specialty contact lenses, she also enjoys providing quality comprehensive eye care and ocular disease management to her patients. Dr. Korszen is an active member of the American Optometric Association and Optometric Physicians of Washington. In 2016, she earned her Fellowship in both the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Society. Her personal interests include reading, skiing, mountain biking, and exploring the Pacific Northwest with her husband.

Erik D. Skoog

After completing undergraduate studies at Duke University, Dr. Skoog graduated Magna Cum Laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. Following the completion of an internship and residency in Ophthalmology at the Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, South Carolina, he began the private practice of Ophthalmology in Buffalo, New York, where he also taught the Ophthalmology residents at the University of Buffalo on a part time basis. He came to Spokane after completing a Fellowship in Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Spokane County Medical Society and the Washington State Medical Society. Dr. Skoog joined the Spokane Eye Clinic in 2002. His specialty is the treatment of corneal and external eye diseases, refractive surgery (LASIK & Advanced Surface Ablation/PRK) and small incision cataract surgery. Dr. Skoog enjoys working with patients from all walks of life to help them see the world around them in greater detail. Him and his family love living in the Pacific Northwest and the multitude of activities available just minutes away from town.

Jeffrey D. Colburn

Dr. Colburn has served at Spokane Eye Clinic as a Pediatric Ophthalmologist since 2010. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Walla Walla University. He earned his Medical Degree from Loma Linda University where he received the Chancellor's Award for academic achievement and community service. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, he then pursued a year of additional fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus at the University of Indiana. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Active Member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and a Specialty Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). He also actively participates in clinical research through the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) network. Dr. Colburn loves the opportunity to work with children and make a permanent difference in their lives. He went to medical school with the intention of being a pediatrician before he unexpectedly fell in love with eyes. Pediatric ophthalmology has given him the opportunity to work with kids & eyes. He specializes in working with lazy eye (amblyopia), eye muscle problems in children and adults (strabismus), infant tear duct surgery, childhood glaucoma, childhood droopy eyelids (ptosis), and small incision cataract surgery in infants and children.

Jennifer J. Kerns

Dr. Kerns (formerly Dr. Pirie) is a native of Spokane. She graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Washington University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After that she attended Pacific University, where she received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 1999. Following graduation, Dr. Kerns moved to Great Falls, Montana, where she began practice in primary care with an emphasis in contact lens and vision therapy. She then moved to Lewiston, Idaho, where she continued to practice in primary care. In 2001 she joined the professional staff of the Spokane Eye Clinic as Director of the Contact Lens Department. Her responsibilities include the training and continuing education of the Eye Clinic's certified contact lens technicians, compliance with standards of contact lens care, and therapeutic contact lens treatments. Since her arrival at the Spokane Eye Clinic, Dr. Kerns has introduced new and innovative approaches to contact lens fitting and care. She is also involved in research regarding contact lenses and contact lens solutions. Dr. Kerns is certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Her career interests include primary care, contact lenses, sports vision, vision therapy and pediatric optometry.

Jessica E. Weinstein

Dr. Weinstein joins the Spokane Eye Clinic in January 2023. She is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in conditions affecting the retina and vitreous, including the diagnosis and management of wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, inflammation of the eye (uveitis), retinopathy of prematurity, repair of retinal tears and detachment, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. Dr. Weinstein completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal, Canada and earned her Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. She earned her medical degree from the University of Miami in Miami, FL. After medical school, she completed an Internship in internal medicine at West Penn-Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, then went on to train in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University where she was named Chief Resident, 2016-2017. Following residency, Dr. Weinstein went on to complete a Uveitis Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle and a two-year Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Weinstein has won numerous awards for her extensive work in ophthalmology research. She has published multiple peer reviewed journal articles and authored several book chapters. She enjoys speaking and lecturing about uveitis and retinal diseases. Her professional memberships include the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Uveitis Society, the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Young Uveitis Specialists, and Women in Ophthalmology. She most recently was an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Kentucky where she also served as a faculty advisor for the residency program and the Ophthalmology Interest Group. She was also a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Ambassador and serves on DEI committees in both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Weinstein is excited to return to Washington state and explore the Inland Pacific region.

Jonathan G. Haymore

Jonathan Haymore, MD comprehensive ophthalmologist, joined Spokane Eye Clinic in October 2023 after practicing in the area for the last 13 years. He received his undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University in Provo, UT, and his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in New York. Dr. Haymore completed a residency in ophthalmology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, and a fellowship in ocular pathology and research at the University of Utah Moran Eye Center in Salt Lake City. Dr. Haymore specializes in cataracts and comprehensive ophthalmology. His surgical focus is on cataracts and specialty lenses, including astigmatism-correcting and multifocal lens implants. He also enjoys utilizing advancing technologies in laser and surgical glaucoma management. Dr. Haymore is fluent in Italian. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Haymore is married and a father of four. Outside of work, he loves to travel with his wife, ski, bike, and has a passion for anything to do with cars, including drag racing! Dr. Haymore is actively involved in church service, humanitarian aid, and community service.

Kelly M. Moffatt

Dr. Moffatt received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiology at Michigan State University in 2001. She then attended the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois, receiving her Doctor of Optometry Degree in May of 2005. After graduation, Dr. Moffatt moved to Spokane and practiced as an Independent Doctor of Optometry. In 2006, she became Co-Director of the Contact Lens Department at Spokane Eye Clinic. As a member of the professional staff, she provides comprehensive eye exams with the emphasis on refractive conditions, routine and specialty contact lens fitting, and the diagnoses/treatment of ocular diseases. Dr. Moffatt is involved in the training and continuing education of the Eye Clinic's Certified Contact Lens Technicians maintaining compliance with the latest Standards of Contact Lens Care. Certified by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry, Dr. Moffatt is a Member of the American Optometric Association and the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association. Her personal interests include various sports (tennis, running, volleyball) and traveling with her family and friends.

Loren S. Jack

Dr. Jack is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in conditions affecting the retina and vitreous, including the diagnosis and management of wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, inflammation of the eye (uveitis), retinopathy of prematurity, repair of retinal tears and detachment, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. Dr. Jack completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Utah. He earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Science University in Portland, OR. After medical school, he completed a Transitional Year Internship at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, then went on to train in ophthalmology at the University of South Carolina and Palmetto Health, where he was selected to serve as Clinical Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Jack went on to complete a two-year vitreo retinal fellowship at the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. While there, he actively participated in clinical studies investigating therapeutic interventions for wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and uveitis. His professional memberships include the American Society of Retinal Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Washington State Medical Association.

Matthew C. Weed

Dr. Weed joined Spokane Eye Clinic on August 1, 2016. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, he graduated summa cum laude and as college valedictorian with a B.S. in microbiology and a minor in Spanish from Brigham Young University, where he met his wife, who is from Spokane. He received his medical degree at the University of California San Diego and went on to do an internship at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Iowa, followed by fellowships in ophthalmic genetics as well as pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, also at the University of Iowa. Dr. Weed specializes in lazy eye (amblyopia), eye misalignment in children and adults (strabismus), inherited eye diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease, retinopathy of prematurity, and cataract surgery in infants and children. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). He also currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (WAEPS). Dr. Weed and his family are delighted to return to Spokane. Fluent in Spanish, he enjoys reading with his children, playing basketball, making his own slow-cooked smoked barbecue, and camping.

Michael R. Leachman

Dr. Leachman is a board certified general ophthalmologist offering evaluation and treatment for urgent and emergent ophthalmic conditions including ocular trauma. He obtained his undergraduate degree in biology from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. After serving in the US Army he completed his medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and his transitional internship year at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock, AR. Dr. Leachman completed his ophthalmology residency at the Jones Eye Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Science in Little Rock, AR. He has practiced ophthalmology since 1999 in a variety of settings and has worked at Spokane Eye Clinic since 2015. His professional memberships include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Washington State Medical Association and the Spokane County Medical Society. Dr. Leachman enjoys family time, reading, hiking and traveling.

Nathan L. Noakes

Dr. Noakes joined Spokane Eye Clinic in December 2019. He did his undergraduate work at Brigham Young University in Nutritional Science and graduated from the Ohio State University College of Optometry. After Graduation, he went on to work for a multi-specialty Ophthalmology clinic in Springfield, Illinois for over 10 years. Dr. Noakes most recently moved to the Spokane Valley after working at a private optometry practice in Lewiston, Idaho. Dr. Noakes specializes in routine eye care, glaucoma, dry eyes, and cataract evaluation and comanagement, as well as Lasik/PRK co-management. He has experience fitting medically necessary contact lenses, including scleral lenses. He loves to educate his patients on ways to maximize vision and maintain healthy eyes. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Optometric Physicians of Washington, and the Idaho Optometric Physicians. Dr. Noakes grew up in Boise, Idaho. When not in the office providing exceptional eye care, Dr. Noakes can be found enjoying this beautiful world we live in by camping, hiking, mountain biking, road cycling, and skiing with his family and friends.

R. Joel Welch

Dr. R. Joel Welch joined Spokane Eye Clinic in 2020 as a board-certified specialist in both vitreoretinal surgery and ocular oncology. His expertise includes the medical and surgical management of complex retinal diseases and eye tumors including: retinoblastoma, uveal melanoma, uveal metastasis, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration, among others. He performs all types of vitreoretinal surgery including surgeries for retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, and scleral fixation of intraocular lenses, among others. Dr. Welch has degrees in biomedical engineering (BS) and medicine (MD) from the University of Utah. After medical school, his medical training took him and his family to San Francisco (Intern year), Omaha (Ophthalmology Residency), Philadelphia (Eye Tumor Fellowship), and Sacramento (Vitreoretinal Surgery Fellowship). In Philadelphia, Dr. Welch trained for two years under Drs. Carol and Jerry Shields at Wills Eye Hospital, the world's busiest and most well-regarded ocular oncology center. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, including several publications in top journals such as: Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Retina, JAMA Ophthalmology, JAMA Cardiology, Eye, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina, and Ocular Oncology and Pathology, among others. He has presented at several national and international meetings, specifically regarding his eye tumor expertise. He participates in several impactful clinical trials including trials for macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and uveal melanoma. His professional memberships include the International Society of Ocular Oncology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists. Dr. Welch speaks Spanish and enjoys photography, music, cycling, and spending time with his wife and 2 children in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Rory T. Allar

Dr. Allar joined Spokane Eye Clinic in the fall of 2014. He received his undergraduate degree with high honors from the University of Montana in Missoula and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH. He completed a general surgery internship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH followed by an ophthalmology residency at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, OR. After residency, he completed a glaucoma fellowship at the University of California Davis Eye Center in Sacramento, CA. Dr. Allar specializes in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma utilizing medications, lasers, microinvasive and traditional glaucoma surgery. He also performs small incision cataract surgery and sees general ophthalmology patients. He compassionately supports working with underserved populations and has worked internationally providing medical and ophthalmic care in Rwanda, Nicaragua, and China. Dr. Allar is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Washington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and is a Board Trustee of the Spokane County Medical Society. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Allar enjoys music, art, and travel, as well as the many outdoor activities available in the Inland Northwest, including hiking, cycling, and skiing.

Shelly T. Lee

Dr. Lee joined the Spokane Eye Clinic in 2020. She graduated from Harvard University (Cum Laude in Chemistry) and received her medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. Subsequently, she completed her internship at Duke University Medical Center (Internal Medicine) and her ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center San Antonio. Her fellowships were completed at the Casey Eye Institute (Uveitis and Ocular Immunology) and at the Yale Eye Center (Vitreoretinal Surgery). Dr. Lee is a Board Certified ophthalmologist, specializing in medical and surgical retina, and also in uveitis and ocular inflammation. She started her career as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New Mexico, before transitioning to private practice. She has extensive medical and surgical experience in the management of a wide variety of vitreoretinal and uveitic conditions including macular degeneration, retinal detachments, diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker and holes, and infectious and autoimmune causes of uveitis. Dr. Lee is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research and Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American Uveitis Society. She continues to teach courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and occasionally gives lectures at national and international conferences. In her spare time she enjoys snowboarding, traveling, hiking, photography and spending time with her family. Dr. Lee is fluent in Spanish and Chinese.

Thomas J. Riley

Dr. Riley attended Pacific University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Sciences and a Doctor of Optometry Degree. Dr. Riley is a member of the American Academy of Optometry receiving his fellowship in 2001. He received his Board Certification in Medical Optometry in 2013 from the American Board Certification of Medical Optometry. Following completion of his training Dr. Riley joined the Spokane VA Medical Center where he served as the Chief of Optometry from 1996-2013. Dr. Riley was also the director of optometry student and residency training while at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Riley was a member of the Washington State Department of Health Board of Optometry. He was appointed to this position by previous Washington State Governors Gary Locke and Christine Gregoire. He was chair of the Board from September 2003 to September 2005. While on the Board he was the principle writer of Washington Administrative Code that enabled optometrists to prescribe prescriptive oral medications. In 2009 Dr. Riley was awarded the prestigious Washington State "Optometrist of the Year". Dr. Riley joined the staff of Spokane Eye Clinic in 2013. His professional interests include triage eye care, management of eye disease and comprehensive eye exams.
