Dr. Tommie Mabry

Dr. Tommie Mabry was another inspirational speaker who addressed how kids at risk in survival mode cannot find purpose in school. Although he comes from a very different background from our students and families, the influence of trauma on one's experience in school is similar. Our VCS students have different trauma, triggers, and pressures than those in the schools where Dr. Mabry has worked, but they are still present and influence their ability to be successful at school. He spent time discussing the importance of relationships in building strong schools. It was exciting to receive validation that the time and energy we commit to building community is critical. The time that is purposefully dedicated to community groups as well as establishing relationships with and between students at the beginning of the year (and beyond) is well-invested. Attending the Learning and the Brain Conference was eye-opening and inspiring. The top speaker for me was one of the first in the conference lineup. Dr. Ayelet Fishbach from the University of Chicago gave a very succinct talk on her research regarding motivation, balanced by a very practical look at the hot topic of goal-setting. She shared the best practices of those who are, as she put it, wise in their method of motivation as well as the pitfalls of how many people think of (or try to sell others on) goals in today's overworked culture of burnout. She highlighted her research showing the difference between how we set goals for ourselves and how we set goals for others, and I have already begun to work this idea into my lessons, assignments, and assessments.

Somewhat like St. Paul, I got knocked off my horse on my way to a career in music performance and a happily married life! It's not that I never thought about religious life, especially after two Holy Cross Sisters in my grade school asked me when I was in junior high if I would consider the possibility of becoming a Sister. I gave the idea some thought and put it on the back burner - way back burner! I finished high school and went to college, enjoying my friends, dating, and I even became engaged to a wonderful man. But somehow it was not enough for me. Something seemed to be missing. So I called on my pastor, who happened to have been my high school principal - so he knew me pretty well. After having a good discussion with him, he directed me to visit the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in Beaverton. The rest is history! I will just add that I have been a Sister of St. Mary of Oregon for more than 40 years. I feel blessed and grateful to be called to be a compassionate, joyful servant of the Lord as I serve the Church and my community.

Sister Josephine Pelster

Job Titles:
  • Director of Pastoral Care
Sister Josephine Pelster, a Sister of St. Mary of Oregon, returned to Maryville in Oct. 2008 as Director of Pastoral Care. She is a board-certified chaplain with the National Association for Catholic Chaplains. Her background as a chaplain includes Providence Hospice, Providence Seaside Hospital and Extended Care Unit, Franciscan Care Center and St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma Washington. Prior to serving as director of pastoral care, Sr. Josephine enjoyed the ministry of being a registered nurse at Maryville for 25 years. She is delighted to be "back home" now providing spiritual care to the patients, their families, and the staff. She enjoys sharing her vocation story with young women, hiking on the Oregon coast and visiting her large family.

Sister Michael Francine Duncan

The first Sister of St. Mary of Oregon I met was Sr. Joyce Barsotti. She was hosting an evening retreat, "Come and See," at St. Vincent Parish in Salem, Ore. It was in March, very rainy, and I was the only person to show up for the retreat. It was very intimidating for me to be the only one to attend with five Sisters whom I just met for the first time. I trusted God to know what was good for me and I found myself praying my way through the retreat. I liked all the Sisters who were there and eventually became comfortable. I took brochures of the different religious orders and went home. A few days later I called Sr. Joyce and we spoke about reading material. I visited her and chose a Thomas Merton book, Seven Story Mountain. As I read the book, it pretty much helped change my life and inspired my interest and commitment to seek out a religious life. I visited the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon several times and started to discern with the Sisters. As I learned more about the Sisters' daily routine, I found that the rhythm of prayer and work resonated with my heart. One of the Sisters who helped me enormously was Sister Angeline Sohler. We worked together in the SSMO Foundation Office, and I appreciated her quiet and creative personality. I entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in 1998. Sr. Angeline has been a friend and support during all my years with the Sisters. I have experienced several different ministries, and now as Vocation Director, I am able to help women who are interested in religious life. I assist them in navigating their spiritual yearnings and the practicalities of investigating their vocational call to religious life. I also work as a mental health counselor, and this I enjoy very much. Sister Michael Francine receives a candle from Sister Charlene Herinckx
