BTNEP is dedicated to educating and assisting citizens to take action on their own property and in their own lives toward improving water quality in our estuary... BTNEP is one of 28 National Estuary Programs throughout the United States and its territories. Congress established the National Estuary Program (NEP) through section 320 of the Clean Water Act in 1987. The Barataria-Terrebonne estuarine complex became a National Estuary in 1990. BTNEP was established in recognition of the national significance of this estuary system... The mission of BTNEP is the preservation and restoration of the Barataria - Terrebonne estuarine system, the 4.2 million-acre region. BTNEP strives to rebuild and protect the estuary for future generations through the implementation of a science-based, consensus-driven plan that utilizes partnerships focused on the estuary's rich cultural, economic, and natural resources.
