What he meant is that if we pay attention to our emotions when we are with others, we will see more clearly who we actually are. Do we get upset, disturbed, angry, violent, jealous, etc.? Or, are we happy, grateful, appreciative, thankful, etc.? This is why we owe a debt of gratitude to others for helping bring out these emotions and qualities that reside within us so that we are able to feel and sense them. Without others, this process is extremely difficult and finding out who we are and what we are really like might escape us...
