What he meant is that if we pay attention to our emotions when we are with others, we will see more clearly who we actually are. Do we get upset, disturbed, angry, violent, jealous, etc.? Or, are we happy, grateful, appreciative, thankful, etc.? This is why we owe a debt of gratitude to others for helping bring out these emotions and qualities that reside within us so that we are able to feel and sense them. Without others, this process is extremely difficult and finding out who we are and what we are really like might escape us... Several years ago, when my company moved me to their Wall Street office as an institutional broker selling to large clients in Dallas, Houston and Galveston, I was trained by a securities analyst whose training was encyclopedic in scope but left me feeling that something was wrong.
