Jonathan is an oncology social worker, providing counseling to people coping with cancer and people who have experienced the loss of a loved one.
Jonathan shares, "What I enjoy most about being a social worker is learning about people, their lives, their strengths, and ultimately, their resiliency in overcoming the many obstacles they encounter in life. Having access to the resources that Cancer Care provides can be vital to someone experiencing the complexity and stressful nature of a cancer diagnosis for themselves or a loved one. I am excited to have the opportunity to work for an organization like Cancer Care that remains dedicated to assisting individuals with a cancer diagnosis, their family members/caregivers and the community as a whole."
Joy is an online support group moderator at Cancer Care.
Additional training:
Trauma-informed clinical practice - NYU
Joy shares, "I have always known that I wanted to work in a helping field and when my cousin became a social worker, I was inspired and amazed by how impactful social workers can be for their clients and the community. When I first began my master's degree in Social Work, I always thought I would help those with dementia or Alzheimer's. However, after my experience working on an oncology floor during one of my first social work jobs, I grew to love the population. I was able to see the amazing strength in my patients and getting to know them and work with them during their hospital stay was always something that stuck with me. Receiving a cancer diagnosis affects not only the client, but their families and friends in more ways than one and it is an honor to work with this population. Especially after having a close family member diagnosed with cancer, and seeing all of the difficulties that arise with a diagnosis, this work is very close to my heart. "
