Federal Public Defender Offices were established under the Criminal Justice Act of 1964. Under the Act, Federal Public Defenders are appointed to represent individuals accused of a federal crime, but unable to afford counsel. The Act was established to guarantee that those who cannot afford to pay a lawyer are represented with the same zeal and the same resources as defendants who have the money to pay a lawyer.
